August 13, 2009 – Casualties were reportedly high on the Philippine Marines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) during a day-long clash between the their forces in Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan yesterday.

Around 3am yesterday, troops of the Philippine Marines stormed an attack on suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) at Sitio Kurellem, Baranagy Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan.

However, at around 6am after attacking and engaging the ASG, the Marines diverted its offensives against MILF forces under the 114th Base Command of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) – MILF at adjacent Sitio Kapayagan, Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.

The attack on the MILF forces by the Marines was launched without provocations, a field report said.

Firefight escalated to Sitio Bato Mapoteh and Sitio Maluha in Baguindan with the Marines heavily pounding the areas indiscriminately with artillery fires.

Three innocent non-combatant women were killed by the artillery shelling by the Philippine Marines.

Gun battle continued until evening. Accordingly, the combat operations against the ASG and MILF were test missions for the newly trained Marine troops.

MILF suffered nine martyrs and four wounded. At one hand, the casualties on Marines were approximated at 50 men.

The casualties on the MILF were those who pursued the withdrawing Marines at Sitio Mapoteh but were unable to get out of the area as Marines reinforcement troops arrived and scoured the area.

Scores of assorted firearms that were captured by the pursuing MILF fighters from the fallen marines were recovered by the Marines reinforcement troops who cordoned the pursuing MILF fighters.

Barangay Baguindan, the area for the test mission of the Marines, is the bailiwick of MILF provincial committee chairman and some brigade commanders of the 114th Base Command BIAF - MILF.

MILF leaders in the province believed that real target of the operations of the Marines were not the ASG but the MILF forces.

The test mission attack on the MILF violated the exiting MILF – government ceasefire accord and diminished the letter and spirit of President Gloria Macapgal Arroyo’s declaration of suspension of military offensives in the conflict affected areas and MILF forces in a bid to resume the stalled peace negotiations with the MILF.

A protest on this sneaky attack against MILF forces by the Philippine Marines is up to be filed by the MILF against the government as violation of the ceasefire and act jeopardizing mutual efforts to sustain the government SOMO and MILF suspension of military actions.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 14, 2009) – Fighting between troops and Moro rebels subsided in the southern Philippine province of Basilan as the military on Friday gave funeral honors to 23 soldiers killed in the clashes.

“There have been no reports of fighting in Basilan, but military operations against the Abu Sayyaf still continue,” said Marine Major General Benjamin Dolorfino, commander of military forces in Mindanao.

Troops stormed an Abu Sayyaf camp in the hinterland village of Silangkum in Ungkaya Pukan town on Wednesday and seized weapons and improvised explosives. But soldiers also clashed with a group of Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels in the neighboring village of Baguindan that sparked daylong clashes that also killed 10 gunmen.

The MILF, which is currently negotiating peace with Manila, accused government soldiers of attacking the rebels. It said troops also mutilated the bodies of three of rebels, including a senior MILF leader, killed in the clashes.





Dolorfino denied the MILF accusations. “That’s not true,” he told the Mindanao Examiner.

On Friday, Dolorfino led funeral honors for the slain soldiers in Zamboanga City along with Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and Armed Forces chief General Victor Ibrado.





Relatives and families of killed soldiers weep as fellow soldiers pay their last respect to the fallen marines and infantrymen. Coffins of soldiers were paraded inside the Western Mindanao Command headquarters where hundreds of soldiers and civilian employees lined up a road leading to the gymnasium where the caskets are put on display for public viewing.

And just across the woman, family members also gathered and weeping around a coffin of a soldier, whose face was deformed because of what looked like a hack wound. Two other caskets were closed to hide the wounds in the faces of the slain soldiers, both marines.





Lieutenant Colonel Gamal Hayudini, commander of the military’s 4th Civil Relations Group, said MILF gunmen engaged government troops, who were pursuing the Abu Sayyaf, in a firefight despite an earlier coordination between the military and the rebel group.





“The government forces were confident with the on-going peace negotiation, thus, making the troops believe that nothing will really happen since the MILF was informed of the pursuit operations but unexpectedly, they engaged in firefight with our forces. The MILF should not mislead the people by always passing on the blame to the government forces,” he said.






The MILF is the country’s largest Muslim rebel group which is fighting the past three decades for self-determination.

I is hard to not believe MILF members have relatives and friends in the ASG. Also, I doubt that MILF is not getting any share in ASG kidnappings. ASG may even be its money making branch.

I suspect, just gut feeling, that information that the AFP was to stage an attack, and get reinforcement may have been passed by ASG sympathizers in the MILF to their units in the area. That could be why MILF/ASG was able to ambush the reinforcements.

Marines mutilate MILF fatalities


August 14, 2009 – Three dead bodies of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters were severed by the Philippine Marines troops that attacked their areas two days ago at Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.

One of the mutilated fatalities was a ground commander who fiercely fought the Marines who surprisingly attacked their positions at Sitio Kapayagan, Barangay Baguindan. His neck was lacerated apparently by a bladed weapon and his ears were cut off.

The two other mutilated dead bodies are of MILF forces. They were hug tied and several body parts were severe using bladed weapons. Internal organs came out their stomach.

Troops of the Marines Battalion Landing Team (MBLT) – 10 Philippine Marines attacked the MILF forces at Sitio Kapayagan, Barangay Baguindan around 7am last August 12, 2009.

The attacked against the MILF forces came few hours after an attacked by a different group of Marines to Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) at Sitio Kurellem, Barangay Silangkum, Ungkaya Pukan at around 3am of August 12, 2009.

Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, is a known community of MILF political leaders and military officials of the MILF to all, including the government armed forces. Barangay Silangkum in Ungkaya Pukan where the first marine troops attacked the ASG is a neighboring barangay of Baguindan.

The attacked on the MILF by the marines figured out into almost 18 hours of fierce encounters that end up at late evening.

But the marines insisted that they did not attack the MILF forces even as they said they coordinated with the MILF the conduct of operations against the ASG at the nearby barangay Silangkum.

Marines further said that the MILF got involved in the fray as they provided support to the ASG.

Both claims of the Marines were vehemently belied by MILF leaders, saying the marines treacherously attacked the MILF after they attacked the ASG. They also said that there was not a coordination made by the marines to the MILF pertaining to the attack to ASG.

10 MILF forces were martyred to include the three mutilated comrades, six (6) were wounded in action and one (1) still missing in action during their encounter with the attacking marines.

According to report from the area, there are 26 wounded government forces and more than 50 killed, who are mostly marines.

The report also cited an appeal for the government forces particularly the top military commanders to give primacy to the peace process with the MILF instead of being used or taking sides on politics and local feuds.

The MILF is up to file a protest against the MILF for the uncoordinated movements and attack by the marines to MILF forces at their own native place and communities at Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.

“To all BIAF-MILF and the Bangsamoro as a whole, the firefight for almost 18 hours between the MILF and AFP troops was a clear violation by the AFP of the ceasefire agreement and undermined the (government ) SOMO signed on July 23, 2009,” said SMS by top MILF leader in Basilan.

He also believed that if the operations by the government forces against MILF will wantonly continue then the situation will become serious, volatile and explosive.

“This is indeed a clear indication that elements of the AFP, particularly the marines are opposed to any ceasefire on the ground and advancing other ulterior motives. The marines have a history of defying the central government. Remember the attempted coup in 2006 which was to be ignited by a war against the MILF in Mindanao,” he stressed.

August 15, 2009 – A top leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (BIAF – MILF) in the island province of Basilan expressed readiness to fight all-out when attacked by government forces.

This was the forthright statement of the commander to Luwaran.Net/Com as fighting erupted again yesterday at 4pm between government forces belonging to the Philippine Marines and Police Special Forces and elements of the Abu Sayyaf Group at Sitio Kurellem, Barangay Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.



Burst of fire powers flared up and what ensued was fierce mortal combat between the government forces and ASG fighters. This was the second clash between the two forces since the mayhem last August 12, 2009.

Unconfirmed information said both sides suffered casualties during the more than an hour of fighting.

The government forces pursued the withdrawing ASG fighters and scoured some areas which caused alarm to MILF forces in nearby villages.

It is popularly known that Kurellem, Silangkum is an ASG stronghold, and that its neighboring barangays / villages are identified as MILF communities, which must be recognized and given necessary respect particularly by government forces pursuant to the letters, spirit and goodwill of the ongoing government-MILF peace process.

Earlier, Philippine Marines troops attacked the ASG belonging to Furuji command at Sitio Kurellem, Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo at around 3am on August 12, 2009. Details were not taken during this encounter.

Unfortunately, another group of Marines attacked the MILF forces at Sitio Kapayagan, Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo around 7am after the attacked by the different troops of marines against the ASG at Kurellem.

Sitio Kapayagan is more than a kilometer away from Sitio Kurellem. The MILF stronghold is approximately 6 kilometers away from the ASG lairs at Kurellem.

MILF said the casualty on the government forces, mostly marines, is close to 60 troops. At one hand, MILF suffered 10 killed-in-action, 6 wounded and 1 missing.

Relatedly, MILF assailed the marines for mutilating three dead bodies of their comarades. An MILF commander got severe cuts on his neck and his ears were slashed off, while the two others got several lacerations causing internal organs to came out their bodies.

“We will not leave our areas where we born and raised,” said the MILF commander, adding “we are ready to defend ourselves if attack time and again by the Marines and police.”

He stressed that the MILF in Basilan are all-out in supporting the peace process with the government but it would seem the government forces and authorities in the province are giving much credence, efforts and prioritization to allow the peace process to succeed.

The marines said their operations in Basilan is a "test-mission", which many believed could jeopardize wittingly and unwittingly the renewed efforts to resume the peace negotiations between the government and MILF.

Reds officiate first gay marriage in NPA

DARE to struggle, dare to win ... as married gays. After raiding a few
Army camps, two communist guerrillas hid in a forest gorge and fell in
love.

Deeply.

That was three years ago. On Friday, under a romantic drizzle in a
muddy clearing in Compostela Valley province in Mindanao, Ka Andres
and Ka Jose exchanged vows in a heavily guarded ceremony before
local villagers, friends from the city and their comrades in arms.

They are considered the first homosexual couple in the New People's
Army (NPA) who were wed by the Communist Party of the Philippines
(CPP).

During the "wedding," sponsors draped a sequined CPP flag around
the couple's shoulders. The flag was held in place by a long, beaded
cord which also went around the couple and the sponsors --
symbolizing that their marriage would be made stronger with the help
of comrades and the masses.

Andres held a bullet, as did Jose and each other's hands. The bullets
represented their "commitment in the armed struggle."

Throughout the ceremony, a choir serenaded them with revolutionary
love songs. After they signed their "wedding contract," the newlyweds
kissed amid the usual applause.

Jose recalled the day he first visited the NPA camp for his
revolutionary
integration -- a practice resorted to by city-based revolutionary activists
before their deployment in the countryside.

This was the first time he met Andres, who was preparing audio-visual
materials for a basic revolutionary education seminar.

Jose was young and had a sexist, macho attitude and thought Andres was a
typical tiguwang bayot (old gay), an object of scorn and ridicule.

Andres, an education instructor in the movement, was busy with his
work and did not take too much notice of Jose.

Besides, Andres already had a boyfriend. Later, the two started to
discuss politics.

"I began to understand the revolution and why gays are discriminated by society," Jose said in an interview.

Started as friends

When Jose's integration program ended, he decided to join the NPA. It was Andres who accompanied him to the armed unit -- his first assignment.

They met several times during education training. At the start, it was
purely a comradely interaction. Later, it became romantic.

"I realized he was caring and malambing (affectionate). He would never leave me in times of difficulty," Jose said.

Andres recalled when they both got separated from their comrades ontheir way to get supplies. It was raining and Andres spent the night alone in the forest without provisions. The following day, he ran intoJose, who had also spent the night in the woods, looking for him.

'Sweetheart'

Jose once confided to Andres that sometimes, he would find himself attracted to female comrades.

"I don't get jealous. Even if we are away from each other for months
because of the nature of our respective works. I trust him," Andres
said.

Neither is their age gap an issue. Jose is 21 while Andres is 54. They call each other "sweetheart."

"Andres helps me overcome the challenges and to become strong
politically and ideologically," Jose said.

When the couple realized they were falling in love, they immediately
sought the approval of their respective "collective" or cell unit.

It is the collective's responsibility to foster a strong relationship
within the group and members are assessed every four months.

First gay marriage

As the first same-sex marriage in the NPA, theirs is a union long
awaited by comrades who support gay rights in the movement. It is
also a manifestation of the communist movement's recognition of the
right to engage in gay relations and to marry.

Although the CPP already recognized gay relations and same-sex
marriage, it was not easy for Andres and Jose to make the decision to finally marry.

First, the couple worked hard to change the traditional mind-set of
some comrades regarding gays and gay relationships. They attributed
these biases to the prevailing "patriarchal" culture in Philippine
society.

On gay relations

"[We] conducted painstaking discussions to make comrades
understand gay relations and gay rights," Andres said.

"Gay cadres adhere to the strong Party discipline. They enhance the
prestige of gays in the movement. This has gained positive results
through the years. Comrades (male and female) and even the masses
have learned to respect and recognize gays and their contribution to the
revolution," he said.

As early as 1995, the CPP's Southern Mindanao Regional Party
Committee started to discuss gay rights in the movement.

In 1998, a provision on gay relations and same-sex marriage was
added to the CPP's guiding policy on relations contained in a
document titled "On the Proletarian Relationship of Sexes (OPRS)."

Under the OPRS, the communist movement is committed to guide and
ensure there is no exploitation in any relationship-heterosexual or
homosexual.

What about kids?

During the wedding ceremony, comrades asked Jose -- in jest -- if
Andres could sexually satisfy him.

"If there is love, everything follows, including sexual satisfaction,"
Jose
confessed.

The couple was also asked if they planned to have kids.

The newlyweds said they would deal with the issue later.

"What we have to do now -- with the help of the Party -- is to work on
our
marriage and to be strong while serving the people," Jose said.

Tungkol naman sa mutilations, from when I started to hear about this Mindanao clashes, killed AFP troops come home with missing body parts or are badly mutilated. Siguro, ang mga AFP troops, baka gumaganti.

Bakit sa Luzon, may fights ang NPA at police/troops, pero walang na mumutilate?
