Early 20s, with a number of people who worked for two or three years before entering the college.

The incoming freshman batch has one girl who is 19 years old. The incoming sophomore batch has one guy who was an engineer and past his 40s.

UP Law accepts working students and gives them 7.5 years to graduate. They say it doesn't matter since, for example, the salutatorian last year was a working student.

Speaking only for UP Law, I really admire the block spirit that is instituted instead of a sense of competition. Classmates really pull together, and I think this is true even for the evening students. The Law School Government president is presently appealing to have the library open until midnight, for the benefit of these working students.

Thanks Oscar01. By the way, is there free internet at the UP LAW library. Do you have friends who have lacking in requirements like Rizal course and passed the UP law on the condition that they would finish it during their 1st yr of law? or are they just really strcit about it?

I'm afraid that I've just been in the library once.

I'm not sure about the free internet, but I don't think it's free.

About the Rizal course, I haven't heard of any problems. I think it's a requirement for all college courses.

it was possible, at least a couple of years ago. i applied there back in 97, got accepted despite having a job (they learned about that fact during the interview) but wasn't able to enroll because of my undergrad thesis. i applied again the following year and wasnt accepted. so i landed in SBC which is not-too-friendly with working students.

i have friends/co-workers who study at Ateneo Law. so maybe the fact that you were working wasnt the reason why you were not accepted.

you can study while working in UP. maybe UP is the most working student-friendly law school in the country. UP's evening classes are designed specially for those who work.

from what i've heard, ateneo and u.p. (and quite possibly san beda) do not accept transferees.
SBC asks that question in the application form. also, the student handbook says that as a policy, the school does not accept transferees EXCEPT in meritorious cases to be determined by the Dean, or words to that effect.

the "free" internet in SBC is not really free. the student pays for it as an item in, i think, the miscellaneous fees. furthermore, it is limited to 8 hours per sem.

UP won't be accepting people who attended another law school beginning next year. Our professor told us today that they wanted to start this policy this year, but felt it was unfair to those who had already taken the LAE.

    Oscar,

I hope you don't mind if I ask how much is the annual tuition & fees in UP Law. How about Ateneo Law?

Should I decide to apply to any of these two schools, do I need to take preparatory units, like extra units in Philosophy (beyond the 16 units core curr. in college Philo), etc. since I have a not-so law-related course from Ateneo - CS, to be specific?

    Thanks in advance.

hi ck2001. Tuition in Ateneo for freshmen is around P32,000. You will need 18 units of English, but I heard that Ateneans don't need any extra English units apart from that in the core curriculum, although this was during the time when we were required 15 units of English. I understand that you are required only 12. You might also take Logic to help you in the entrance exam, and so that you don't have to take it anymore in law school.

    hi ck2001.

hope i can help. UP Law charges 300 pesos per unit per semester (last time i enrolled there), so that makes it about 6,500 pesos, for 18 units, including miscellaneous fees.

as long as you have the required number of units in english, rizal, and the social sciences, your pre-law doesn't really matter.

im currently studying political science in DLSU and i really want to take up law after i graduate. sobrnag hirap bang makapasok sa mga law schools dto?? what kind of tests do they give??

It's not too far from your UPCAT and ACET.

UP Law has something that's not so far. It has an abstract reasoning portion, a math portion with accounting, a reading comprehension portion with legal topics, etc. And, an essay writing portion. If you pass, you go to the *wonderful* and *fun-filled* interview where you meet the professors, very *kind* and *gentle* *human beings.*

Ateneo's law exam is more specialized, and has a number of portions on legal aptitude. For example, you are given a real or hypothetical law and a situation, and asked a number of questions based on that.

Oscar - what do u think is the hardest type of test in UP LAw
and Do you have a remedy for that?
By the way is the logic part very hard?

  17. #97

    Cool

What was the hardest part in the LAE...

Well, for some people, I suppose it could be the Mathematics portion. It's all simple math, but there's an Accounting-esque portion at the end, right down to a simple amortization table and rates.

When I took the test, I thought my seatmate told me she was a Finance major, so I turned to her afterwards and congratulated her. She looked at me, smirked, and almost screamed that she was a FINE ARTS major. So the humanities people might want to take note.

The comprehension portion might also challenge some people because it was not very short. You have to learn to read and comprehend VERY quickly in law school, trust me. (We are presently almost measuring readings in inches, not pages.)

Otherwise, I'd say that the abstract portion will have you pulling your hair. Imagine the abstract pattern recognition portion of your standard IQ exam, then multiply the length by ten. And aside from shapes and letter arrangements, you also have number series. I found the last easy because I took a lot of advanced math subjects, but people who are not familiar with juggling numbers might have to think about the relationships (x2, odd-even, add a number, add a series, etc.).

The essay part seems to be a red herring. You may find yourself with no practical knowledge of the subject, but then you'll learn that all they wanted to see was good grammar and coherent sentence structure.

One suggestion, probably: Get a good night's sleep to clear your head.

I vaguely remember that part, so it probably wasn't.

Stories you hear from past batches may be exaggerated ones that focus on just a few tough numbers. I admit there were a few weird ones, though specific examples escape me.
