DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines—The Silliman University College of Law beat the University of the Philippines Diliman in the final round Friday to clinch the championship in the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court competition held November 17-19 at the San Sebastian College in Manila.

Winning the best team, best mooter and best oralist awards, the Silliman duo of Michah Dagaerag and Bryce Tenorio stood head and shoulders above 13 other teams from top law schools in the country to win the right to represent the Philippines in the International Moot Court Competition in Hong Kong in March 2011.

Dean Mikhail Lee Maxino of the SU College of Law told the Inquirer in a telephone interview that the contestants simulated the proceedings of an international court to promote awareness of the international humanitarian law.

The moot court competition is an annual event organized by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), the Philippine Red Cross, the Philippine Association of Law Schools and the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

“They were all good but we came out to be the best,” Maxino said.

The contestants came from nine provincial law schools (Ateneo de Davao University, St. Louis University, Silliman University, Southwestern University, University of Batangas, University of Cebu, University of St. La Salle, University of San Carlos and Xavier University–Ateneo de Cagayan) and from five in Metro Manila (Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines University, San Beda College of Law and University of the Philippines Diliman).

The judges for the 2010 moot court competition were Supreme Court Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, law professor Harry Roque, ICRC regional legal adviser Richard Desgagne, former Representative Mario Agua and lawyer Lorna Kapunan.

The coach of the SU team was lawyer Sheila Lyn Catacutan-Besario, a faculty member of the College of Law. Members of last year’s Moot Court team Terence Callao, who was best mooter in the elimination round, and Karla Aguilan and Joshua Ablong were there to coach the team along with manager Karissa Tolentino in Manila.

Dean Maxino also acknowledged the researches made by Nick Ramacho, Kenny Hotingoy and Zara Dy in support of the SU team.
    any official ranking?
    thanks!

    > I back read. I never thought that there's accountancy in ateneo. You've been part of the discussions and queries since the early part of this thread. haha. You're such a kind lady. Sana when the time you pass the bar, and become a lawyer. You'd still do the same. like answering problems and all that (for free?) hahaha. nice.

neinsager, sino mga members ng UP Team?
one of the team members is my friend, Al-zhoheir <forgot his surname> a.k.a. "Al". isa rin sya sa mga team member sa ANC FaceOff...

@X_like_Malcolm: I think the foremost reason why UP often ends up a runner-up and not a champion in such competitions is the lack of aid and support the moot court members are getting.

Al, a friend of mine, asked for my help way back September, just to borrow books from the libraries in UP so he can use them for the competitions. we conversed a lot about competitions and he told me a lot of things. UP just have so many concerns aside from these competitions that it's not giving it as much time and effort as other schools do. normally, if other schools give it a week of preparation, UP gives it a day or two. But despite that, they still end up winning or almost winning the competitions.

It seems that UP people are conyos! haha That's what I observed when I took the LAE. Conyo type with a nerdy factor. It's quite intimidating I think, talking about yung arrive ng mga student na mejo smart at intelehente. Parang there's no room for mistake or else you'll be humiliated. hahaha

we have to remember that there was no National Elimination before. UP Law sent three teams to HongKong in March 2005. One team was declared as Champion. The other team ended up as Runner Up. Di na maulit ang feat na eto since 1 team na lang ang Philippines since March 2006

hey, what do you think about LYCEUM LAW?

  18. #2078
Hello!!! hey, im a senior student in Lyceum of the Philippines. I'm taking International Relations major in International Trade. I want to know if the Lyceum of the Philippines college of law is good. I saw their faculty and their line up is good din.

What can you say about Lyceum Of the Philippines Law???

  19. #2079
    To UP Law students:

Will a student still be allowed to the 5year program if, though he had a full-time work at the time of enrolment, he has quit his job during the semester? Is he requirec to show cert of employment every enrolment?
