Talking

I am a Filipina based in US.
I write poetry in Tagalog.
Isn't it ironic to read poems in English and nothing in Pilipino....from Filipinos based in the Philippines...

or there are no more poets writing in Pilipino...because they think it is not cool

Talking i beg to disagree..

i'm an english major but i prefer writing poems in Filipino.. it sounds more personal and emotive.. although my poems are more of the contemporary Filipino language - which adapts (not adopts) English and other foreign terms.. here's a sample of my poem..

telepono

imagine mo to:
hawak mo puso kong
nakukuryente sa bawat
karayom mong paghinga
pagkalinga
masakit pero ok lang
kunwari acupuncture

kahit na sa telepono laging siya
siya
siya
siya
sya na lang
o e ano
dun ka naman masaya
wala akong karapatang
magpeople power 3
ipagresign yung nararamdaman
mo talaga, kahit bomba nang
sumasabog ang utak ko
nakakabaliw pero masaya
dahil busog na naman
ako sa bawat salita mong
kumakagat pero kumikiliti
sa tenga ng kaluluwa ko
kahit siya siya siya
na lang naririnig ko
salamat na rin sa kaniya kaniya kaniya
dahil nandito ka naman

nampucha, tignan mo ko:
sinasakal mo ang kamay
ng telepono kong gusto ng bumitaw
dahil sa ignoranteng
pagmamahal na nayuyurakan
pero masaya dahil sa'yo

kahit na magkita tayo
at laging siya
siya
siya
siya na lang
o e ano
nandito naman ako
ako na nabibingi
ako na binubulag
ako na manhid na
ng kabaliwan kong
sumisigaw
sa linya ng kuryente
at telepono
na nanggapos at
nang-akit at
nagkulong sa
buhay ko.

so.. is it 'uncool?'

I do agree that there are a lot of English language poetry here in the Philippines. However, there are also local language poetry (i.e. Tagalog, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, etc). I do not think that being "uncool" is the reason why poets write in English. Language education in the Philippines puts importance to both English and Filipino. However, culturally speaking, Filipinos have a tendency to value the ability to speak and write in English more than in Filipino. Sad as it may be, learning to speak and write in English is needed if one intends to survive in this world (specially for us in a third world country). Another reason is related to young people becoming more and more comfortable with expressing themselves using the English language. Globalization, the Internet, and the emphasis on Western exemplars (both in the arts and business) compels people to adjust towards such trends and standards.

Talking Tagalog poem mas maganda

MGA HAPLOS MO AY NAKAKAPUKAW,
DAMDAMING SA PAG-IBIG NAUUHAW,
TILA KORYENTENG SA BISIG TUMUTULAY,
NAGBIBIGAY NG INIT SA BAWA'T HIMAYMAY.

SA TAMIS NG TINIG, PUSO KO AY UMAWIT,
KALIGAYAHANG MATAGAL NAKATAGO SA DIBDIB,
LUMALABAS, NAGPUPUMIGLAS NANG PILIT,
ANG PAGMAMAHAL, NAKASULAT SA LANGIT.

PARANG AYAW KO NANG GUMISING,
SA MATAGAL NA PAGKAKAHIMBING,
HUWAG AKONG IWANAN SAMO AT HILING,
PAGKAMOT SA LIKOD NA BUNGANG-ARAWIN.

EHEEHHHK MAGPAPAKAMOT LANG PALA NG BUNGANG-ARAW...

For clarification purposes, what specifically is it in walangdila's post you disagree with?

aside from english, i write poems in tagalog...but i'm more comfortable with bisaya, mas sanay ako. but i think filipino (which is a more apt term) is really lyrical...and i'm learning to write using it more often.

hehe anggaling mo garfield m... napakamakata..
wala lang.. i want to be cynical with our present language.. i believe that the philippine's official language is taglish.. that's why most of my filipino poems sport this type of language corruption and even contractions and weird spellings..
