    The CPA Review Thread (2)

advisable poba ReSa for weekend review while still studying??

  2. #2
Wow we are on our 2nd thread. Hehe. Galingan naten sa preboard mga co-reviewee. All accountancy professors are invited to share insights in this thread. I would also like to extend my thanks to sir larry and sir anson for continuous guidance to the students and reviewees.

Kaya let's strive to become a CPA.

    Sacrifice now then enjoy later..Ü

Exactly 5,000 posts yung first thread, at hindi pinalabis. Hindi na rin hinintay isara. Nagbukas na kaagad ng bago!

To all those asking softcopies of review materials from me. I am sorry I only give advises, not review materials. Si Anson Keh, mas generous kaysa sa akin, he provides his MAS Lecture Notes to those who request them. I only provide resources to my co-professors who need the resources to jumpstart their teaching career.

I can't afford to strain my good relationship with them.

Wow... the CPA review on its second thread.

I'll really miss the first thread for very sentimental reasons.

I still remember my first post in the CPA Review thread. I was depressed, financially challenged, and almost hopeless during those times.

Just a background: After my second failure sa board, I worked at a callcenter (July 2006). Nung mga panahon na iyon, I passed the opportunity of good buys because I want to self support my third review. I even skipped some meals at times to maximize my savings. I should save it up for something more important.

After almost a year, I resinged from my callcenter job. With little money to buy few books, a lousy dial up connection and a heart full of hope, I took a deep breath and posted a message here in PEX. Nagtanong ako saan maganda magreview.

It took three posts before I got a reply (because the third post was LONG ). Here is a copy of my post (with the stress points hilighted), dated March 16, 2007, 06:43 PM:

Hi guys. I am an accounting major who flunked the boards TWICE already. I took the October 2005 and May 2006 exams with no luck.

Even though I didn't get any grades below 65 on the last board exam that I took, I was 3 points short below the passing mark (that is, 72%). This prompted me to make a vow to take the exam just one more time, believing that I'm not a "walang alam", but just happy-go-lucky during the review. Failing the boards twice was a hard lesson learned becaue the next review will be a REFRESHER, and nt just a regular review.

After the second failure, I opted to work for a while, even if there is a risk that I would forget most of the accounting concepts that I learned. I need to unwind and to save money for the next review (nahihiya na kasi ako sa parents ko.) I told myself that I will take the boards again after the October 2006 and May 2007 batches.

    Now... here is my query:

It's already March. And within this month I will make a reservation in a CPA review school. I was a former CPAR and ReSA reviewee. I guess my question is: Do you guys think that I should go to a different reivew school? Or review at ReSA again? (because I think CPAR does not offer refresher courses)

Please recommend a review school for my case. I mean, I know that it's ultimately my attitude and determination that will decide on whether I'll make it this time... but a good review school would definitely be a plus.

For the past board exams, BLT had always been my problem (maybe because I don't absorb what I read or I'm just plain brainless when it comes to Law and Tax), followed by MS. The others I may need to update myself because of revised standards etc etc...

I'm planning a weekend session this time with occassional weekday classes in case I need to catch up on something(I attended weekday M-F classes when I was at CPAR/ReSA). By the way... A review school with a less crowded study room would be great.

This is a tough decision for me. I know most reviewers because some of them were my former professors). And I am willing to take the risk of going through the excruciating tension and pressure of the CPA boards AGAIN. Plus the fact that I was gone from review for almost a year... marami-rami na atang updates, plus yun Economics thingy sa MS na idadagdag. Di niyo alam kung gaano kahirap yun feeling. Failing once was frustrating... failing twice feels like hell... parang akala mo ang t*nga t*nga mo...

I'm not planning to fail this third take... baka di ko masikmura hehehe! My advantage I guess is that I feel more mature and ready to take the exam. I'm not ashamed to tell my age... I'm 23.

Despite all these barriers, the little voice inside of me still says that I might make it this time. Kaya I am seriously deciding on which review school to attend to.

I will try to browse through this section for a week. Sana po may makatulong sa akin. Next saturday I will make my choice.

Funny thing is that I always attended Thursday worship sa St. Jude nung nagrereview ako. When I ask God kung papasa ba ako... He gives me a "yes" nod almost all the time (through signs, etc...).

Any output/feedback/comments about my concern will be greatly appreciated. I will post my chosen review school after I make my reservation.

Thanks for taking the time to read this... Thanks po and Good luck sa mga matatapang na examinees!
Many things happened between my first post as a 'commoner' and my first post as a CPA. It was a period of self realization, self assessment and self test. Habang nag aaral ako, I am managing my finances, since I never asked for money from my parents na. It was hard: take note I am not only reviewing but I am also completing my 24-unit refresher course. All for the hope na sana this time maging CPA na ako.

Alam niyo ba, after ko malaman na pumasa ako, ang una ko ginawa ay mag THANK YOU kay LORD at pagkatapos eh mag post sa PEX.

This is my post dated Oct 22, 2007, 03:45 PM, the day of the release of the board exam results:

    ======================================
Look at what’s happened to me,
    I can’t believe it myself.
Suddenly I’m up on top of the world,
    It should’ve been somebody else.

Believe it or not, I’m walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
    Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me.

It’s like a light of a new day,
It came from out of the blue.
Breaking me out of the spell I was in,
Making all of my wishes come true.

Believe it or not, I’m walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free.
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
    Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me.
    ======================================

God is good.
I was so happy that day that I broke into tears. It affirmed my belief in myself and it made all the sacrifices worthwhile. I even bought a newspaper the next morning, took a photo of it, used Paint to encircle my name and used it as a Friendster Photo

Here is my post dated Nov 1, 2007, 05:41 PM. This was the time when I'm at the peak of remembering my whole CPA review ordeal. Imporant points are hilighted. I did not use quotes this time for easy reading. I hope you'd find this still helpful:

    ==============================================================================

Sa totoo lang, it's not the review school that will make you a CPA. Make a checklist of the topics/lessons you need to know for the board exams and tick the ones that you are confident that you know. Then strengthen the topics that you already know. Then balik uli sa mahina. There is no such thing as "alam ko na lahat"... kahit mga preboard topnotchers pakiramdam daw nila ang dami dami pa nilang hindi alam kahit preweek na!

The board exam is not only a test of knowledge but also a test of endurance and retention. Daanan mo lahat. Don't take minor topics for granted. Then review the topics that the reviewer mentioned.

Kapag nag top ka, good.

Kaunting sacrifices lang pag nasa review... bawas TV, bawas chicks, bawas alak, bawas PC, bawas yosi (I said bawas, huwag tanggalin at baka mabaliw ka!!). Always find time to study at least 1 topic every day. Huwag ka papayag na wala ka naaral for the day.

Maintain a balanced diet. Huwag kumain ng kung ano ano. Huwag abusuhin ang katawan. Pag nagrereview, BAWAL MAGKASAKIT!

Maintain healthy social relationships. Mas masarap mag aral kapag may peace of mind, hindi ba?

HUWAG KABAHAN AT HUWAG MATAKOT. Marami kayong pressured at gustong maging CPA. Well of course, kapag nag aral ka, bakit ka matatakot?

Most of all, magdasal ka.

Well I guess that's it. If you're better than me, then I guess you don't need to follow all my suggestions. Nonetheless... this is my little contribution to future CPA examinees.

Pag may tanong, mag PM kayo sa akin at baka may maitulong ako.

    CHillaX!!

Currently, I am working for SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co. as an audit associate. It has been years since I passed tha board. But everytime I remember October 22, 2007, it puts a smile on my face. Sana one day eh magkaroon rin kayo ng "October 22, 2007" niyo.

You really can be a CPA as long as you really want it. There are no boundaries for a restless heart. Believe in yourself and believe that you are capable of achieving great things. One is destined to greatness when one believes in it.

To the future CPAs... good luck! This thread is for you. May it be as helpful to you as it has been helpful to me.

    Let the games begin...

True and true.

May introduction si Atty Valix bago binigay ang microphone kay Brian; he's still connected in SGV and conducted lectures in PFRS.

overconfident... very true in my case. I failed the exam, short of 2 or 3 more points, worse di pa ko nakundisyon.

    Hi All!

Let me introduce myself. Im Lovella and im an aspiring CPA. I had been reading forums re becoming a CPA which inspired me to try again this time. I graduated March 2005, failed once with a grade of 73.57..

After that, I needed to find a job due to financial difficulties. I need to support myself as well as extend help to my parents. And my dream of becoming a CPA was put behind...

Currently, I am working and taking the Review here in Cebu CPA Review Center with hopes in my Heart that someday I'm going to make it..

Why I am writing here, because my friends may understand what i had gone through in my life..but only CPAs and future CPAs understand the journey of becoming a CPA.

It might sound corny, but let me share my chosen song for my journey of becoming a CPA.

    I can almost see it
    That dream I am dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying
    "You'll never reach it"

    Every step I'm taking
    Every move I make feels
    Lost with no direction
    My faith is shaking

    But I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
    It's the climb

    The struggles I'm facing
    The chances I'm taking
    Sometimes might knock me down
    But no, I'm not breaking

    I may not know it
But these are the moments that
    I'm gonna remember most, yeah
    Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong
    Just keep pushing on
    [/I]

The preboard exam results is a good indicator of actual cpa board performance only if the questions you have encountered in the preboard you have seen only for the first time. If you got good grades because you have previously encountered those problems, then it is no longer a good indicator of your actual Board Exam performance. The problem is may mga reviewer pa na almost 50% of their preboard questions come from their "reviewer-books."

    So unfortunate but so true.

It is politically incorrect to laugh at other's accent or to imitate the way they talk.
