They seem to have mastered the EAC Generals in their first game. Credit that to Coach Leo Isaac's training and tactics.

Kahit wala na si Daroya mukhang mas malakas pa rin ang AU kaysa sa ibang regular teams tulad ng Mapua.

Blazers prevails over Great Danes, Generals bowed to Chiefs
    NCAA Press Release 2009-06-30

Games tomorrow (The Arena, San Juan)
10:00 a.m.- San Sebastian vs San Beda (Jrs.)
11:45 a.m.- Letran vs Arellano (Jrs.)
2:00 p.m.- San Sebastian vs San Beda (Srs.)
4:00 p.m.- Letran vs Arellano (Srs.)

College of St. Benilde survived an atrocious free throw shooting day as it turned back a stubborn Angeles University Foundation, 87-76, yesterday to jumpstart its bid in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Angelo Montecastro fired 20 points while Chuck Dalanon, William Johnston and Jeff Morial added 18, 12 and 10 points, respectively, to hand new coach Richard del Rosario, who replaced Gie Abanilla last year, his first NCAA win.

"It's a good feeling winning my first game here in the NCAA," said del Rosario, who lasted long in the pros with his solid defense and excellent work ethic.

Amel Fuentes drained 18 points and Limmuel Manarang, Matt Carney and Aaron Santos had 16, 11 and 11 points, respectively, for the Great Danes, who put up a gallant stand but just didn't have energy left in the stretch.

Although the Blazers, whose one and only title to date came nine years back, were a bit taller than the Great Danes, the former was surprisingly out-rebounded, 52-62.

St. Benilde, which finished sixth last season with a 4-10 (win-less) record, was also nightmarish from the foul line as it bungled 23 of its 42 trips there.

"We really need to strengthen inside," said del Rosario, who is hoping to instill the same physical strength he has during his prime in the pros.

Earlier, St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills downed AUF, 117-41, and Arellano slammed EAC, 83-61, to jumpstart their own bids in the juniors' division.

The Blazers dictated the pace at the start but couldn't really break loose no thanks to some miscues and tons of misses from the free throw line.

In the first half alone, the Blazers missed 14 of the 26 shots they took from the penalty line and then went on to miss nine of the 16 they attempted in the final period.

"Shooting free throws is another thing we really had to work on because we missed a lot in this game," said del Rosario.

In the second game, Arellano University bared its true fangs as it smothered fellow guest team Emilio Aguinaldo College, 80-62, to grab a share of the early lead.

The Chiefs, champions in the Fr. Martin Cup and the NCRAA, drew strength from Adrian Celada, who sizzled with 19 points including three from behind the arc.
