Will they bark louder this time around?
    Team Hoyas

If there is one team who made the most moves this pre-season it's Team Hoyas.

Everyone was shocked when team captain Arvy Trinidad traded away key players JC Yumul and Robert Rivera to other teams while compiling draft picks for the rookie draft.

This paid off as they got as the league's number 1 overall pick Waf Fabie who will defintely help the cause of the Hoyas this season

Fabie will fill in the void that the Hoyas were lacking in the previous years and that is inside scoring and defense

Aside from Fabie, Joby Primicias was added to the team ensuring the Hoyas that they will have a good point guard in the tournament.

However, the question still lingers for the Hoyas, are the new recruits enough for the Hoyas to move up in the team standings?

KEY LOSSES: JC Yumul, Robert Rivera,
KEY ACQUISITION : Waf Fabie, Brix Catipon

    Expected First 5
Waf Fabie, JC Chong Arvy Trinidad, Joby Primicias, Anton Delos Reyes

    Key man off the bench
    James Ilagan

    Strength - Hunger
    Weakness - Bench, Player Roles

Finally do you smell what the Lions are cooking?
    Team Lions

After holding the league record for the longest losing streak in the history of PEXBALL , at 20 games (this team hasn't won a game in 2 years), The Lions are excited and raring to go this season

Team Captain Chris Lasin is expecting that his team will be able to forget their dismal finishes just like what NU Bulldogs did last season in the UAAP wherein they became instant contenders after a great off season buildup.

JC Yumul , Vince Cortez, Bong Gonzales and Alexander Bacani have plugged the holes in the roster of the team which gave reasons for this franchise to dream big.

Will the Lions pre-season moves create a big impact in the league or will they just be one of the pretenders for the title.

KEY LOSSES: Jeff Catu, Marky Tainio, Eugene Recongco, Hansel Belen
KEY ACQUISITION : JC Yumul, Bong gonzales, Vince Cortez, Abet Pinili , Alexander Bacani

    Expected First 5
Eric Escalona, JC Yumul, Alexander Bacani, Vince Cortez, Amiel Gonzales

    Key man off the bench
    Bong Gonzales

    Strength - Hunger
Weakness - Attendance, Roles in the team

    the Rising Sun
    Team Pandas

If there is one team that everyone should look out for , it should be Team Pandas.

In what is considered the biggest transaction in their franchise history, the Pandas unloaded its main point guard Mark Duietcher Tan and got serviceable big man Jose Martin Jimenez to help shore the frontcourt of the Orangemen.

The Pandas then took in silent but effective rookies in the Rookie Draft which made the Pandas one of the teams to beat this season.

This team is expected not to miss Tan even for a single second as Macapugay is expected to fill the said void left by often absent guard from Muntinlupa

The only question for the Pandas is how will the new acquisitions affect the chemistry of the dangerous Pandas

KEY LOSSES: Mark Deuitcher Tan, Ian Torres
KEY ACQUISITION : Christian sanggalang, MJ Macapugay, Jami Jimenez

    Expected First 5
Jeremy Dela Cruz , JM Florendo , Paul Dungao, Albert Chua , MJ Macapugay

    Key man off the bench
    Carlo Palmares

    Weakness - cohesion

    sophomore jinx does not exist
    Team Titans

Team Titans surprised everyone last year as it won 3 games in the elimination round despite having a rag-tag team in the tournament.

Led by reigning MVP Mike Soliven, the Titans will try to make some noise again this season and prove that sophomore jinx is not in their vocabulary.

The Titans overhauled their roster these season and banked on the rookie draft to get new players that will help their team

But one day after the draft, the Titans hit the wall as their draft pick Paul Alguno was found to be ineligible to play and the Titans were back to square one.

Titans is now hoping that their special draft pick James Vitorio will somehow provide big numbers for them

KEY LOSSES: Aries Domacena, Daryl Sta. Ana, Windsor Ramos, Ramil Batistel, Aaron Ricafort, Hardy Espineda, Brian Ocampo, Ivan Bernardo

KEY ACQUISITION : + Chester Sunga, Fredrich Ong, Allen de Guzman, James Ryan Victorio, Jan Merrick Salas, Marlon Franco, Archie Burce, Neil Ritua

    Expected First 5
Joel Ilao, Mike soliven, James vittorio, Jan Merrick Salas, Dan Guzman

    Key man off the bench
    Neil Ritua

    PEXBALL’S SUSPENSE THEATRE
A lookback at PEXBALL’S heartstopping games
    By Francis Malicdem

    PEXBALL Unforgettable Moments

    SEASON 4
#1 Blue Blupers vs. #2 White Arsenals 1st Round Match 64-63
Bridson Castronuevo waxed hot the entire game and almost carried the entire Blupers on his back, but the Arsenals were a tough nut to crack and stayed close throughout the game. With 5 seconds left, Castronuevo missed his 2nd free throw and the ball was rebounded by former Arsenals center Alvin Gamboa thus giving the Arsenals a big chance to wreck the immaculate record of the Blupers

But Gamboa, who had a great rebounding game, suddenly called for time which is not allowed back then in the league and this wasted precious seconds on the game clock allowing the Blupers to remain unbeaten at that time.

    SEASON 5
#1 Green Spartans vs. #2 Blue Blupers 2nd Round Match 86-83 OVERTIME.
This game is considered the most exciting game in PEXBALL history as of today.
Emer Esparaggo hits a buzzer beating 3 point shot at the buzzer that triggered a wild celebration not only for the Spartans but also from the people who were watching the game. The Spartans played the extra session without top rookie Jensen Ilagan who fouled out in the regulation period. This game also featured another buzzer beater courtesy of then Spartans' sixth man Gian Canilao who hit his first ever career 3 in the league at the buzzer to force overtime

    SEASON 7
#4 Team Spartans vs. #2 Team Arsenals
Semifinals Game 1 by 3 points
The Spartans entered the game with only 7 players suited up for the game but this didn't dampen the spirits of the team as it showed its fighting heart to defeat the much favored and rival Team Arsenals.

Norman Buentipo called its inner "Piccolo" power as he played almost the entire game leading the Spartans to victory

    SEASON 8
#4 Team Pandas vs. #5 Team Blupers
Semifinals Game 3 by 1 point
Forward Jun Florendo, who had been missing all his shots all game long, made a key play as he stole the ball from Blupers' guard Ed Piastro in the halfcourt and raced to his team's basket for a layup with 1.2 seconds left in the game.

However the win was not secured until Blupers' Bridson Castronuevo's desperate heave from halfcourt bounced several times in the ring before falling out.

#6 Team Tigers vs. #3 Team Packers
Semifinals Game 3 by 3 pts
The Tigers were down by as much as 16 points, then suddenly woke up in the last 6 minutes of the game. Dexter Ong who were missing his shots in the crucial game, hit a big 3 pointer with 22 seconds left to push his team by 2. In the ensuing play, the Packers missed open shots and again Ong rose to the occasion and grabbed the important rebound. Ong split his charities to give his team a much needed space. Packers then went to their main men Stu Samson and Beng Rocela but they missed their shots allowing the sixth seeded Tigers to register the upset series win against the favored 3rd seed Packers..

    DOWN TO WIRE
    Exciting games open PEXBALL 2012
    Rookies in explosive debut

    By Francis Malicdem

If the opening day games were any indication of how the games will go down in this year’s PEXBALL tournament then this would be the most memorable season of all

Three games . Three exciting results. 5 points. One overtime .

This just happened in the opening day.

    STREAKS CONTINUE

Thirteen wasn’t a bad number at all for the Spartans as it won its 13th straight game, including last year’s sweep, after it defeated its arch rival Team Arsenals 61-56 in the first game of the day's triple header

However, the Spartans had to go through the eye of the needle to notch the win as it needed a big fourth quarter run to put away the Arsenals

Rookie Lorenz Figueroa scored 8 of its team high 14 markers in the payoff period as he provided the spark off the bench for his team who seemed to be out of sync throughout the game.

Arsenals started the game motivated as it raced to an early lead before the Spartans got its act together in the second period led by Omar “The Bird” Ilagan

The Arsenals turned things around in the third with main man Robinson Abalos scoring 7 markers which resulted to a 42-35 lead

Spartans slowly cut the lead at the start of the 4th period starting with a 3point play from Jericho Ilagan and from there the defending champions uncorked an 11-2 run to grab the lead at 46-44.

Rookie Japs Valenzuela then made a long three which gave the Arsenals a 47-46 lead.

But that was the last time Arsenals tasted the lead as the Spartans relied on their manpower

The Arsenals actually had a chance to tie the game at 59 as Spartans failed to connect on their free throws with 7.5 seconds left but the White team failed to secure the rebound and Spartans finished off the game with Emer Esparrago’s free throws

Another streak continued meanwhile with the Team Lions who suffered its 21st game losing streak as it fell to the undermanned Team Hoyas 52-47

The new look Lions who were aiming to snap their 3 season long losing streak appeared to be a step closer in achieving their goal when the Hoyas showed up without key men Jobs Primicias, Anton Delos Reyes and this season’s number 1 pick overall Waf Fabie

It was a close game in the first half with Hoyas only up by three at 23-20 but as the third canto started , the Gray team waxed hot and limited the Lions to just 3 field goal attempts.

The Hoyas’ lead went up further to 12 points at 47-35 in the 4th period courtesy of the 3point shot from Louie Dexter Lao before the Lions mounted a serious rally led by their hardworking rookie Abeth Pinili to cut the lead of the Hoyas to just 7 at 47-40 with 90 seconds left

Arvy Trinidad then restored order for the Hoyas as he scored a basket to push his team by 8 at 49-41.

5’4 rookie guard Arsenio Galanida Jr paced the Hoyas with 25 points while JC Yumul led the Lions with 18.

    OVERTIME

Team Titans meanwhile scored a big upset as it defeated pre-tournament favorite Team Packers 75-71 in overtime.

Reigning MVP Michael Bryan Soliven , drawing inspiration from his family who were watching the game, scored 20 of his 23 points in the 2nd half as he led the Titans to victory.

But Soliven didn’t do it alone as he got help from his reliable partner in crime in Joel Ilao and rookies Neil Ritua, James Victorio and Dan De Guzman who created some noise as they scored, rebounded and defended well.

The Titans started the game with a 20-13 lead before the Packers made their move and dropped a 12-1 run to grab the lead at 25-21.

The Titans regained the upperhand at 30-28 before Tristan Taboac scored a buzzer beating half court shot to give Packers the lead at halftime at 31-30

Packers continued their onslaught in the second half as it took a 48-41 lead through the efforts of Taboac.

But Soliven woke up and singlehandedly gave the lead to Titans at 55-54 before Packers’ new recruit Romeo Valdez Jr returned the favor for his team with a short jumper.

Soliven then made an and-1 play giving the Purple team a 58-56 with 2 minutes remaining.

Ilao added to the lead of the Titans with a basket before Taboac cut the lead to two at 60-58.

After turnovers from the Titans, the Packers tied the game with 10 seconds left with two free throws from rookie Mike Brua.

The Packers had the chance to put the game away after the Titans again turned the ball over but the Season 6 champions failed to convert on their their attempt as time expired

In overtime, the Titans surged ahead by six at 70-64 courtesy of the shot clock beating jumper by Soliven

But the Packers showed its never say die attitude as it scored five straight points to cut the lead to just two at 71-69 with 1 minute remaining.

Ilao then turned the ball over but De Guzman stole the ball in the Packers next possession.

After De Guzman’ split in the free throw line , Packer cut the lead to a solitary point with Brua’s two freebies.

Ilao again turned the ball over again but Packers’ gunner Dela Cruz missed his 3 point attempt resulting to a split from Ilao with 13 seconds left.

Up by two at 73-71, the Titans focused on their defense which resulted to another missed 3 point attempt from the Packers.

De Guzman sealed the game for the Titans with two free throws.

    TIGERS DEVOUR PANDAS
    BLUPERS WIN BIG

    by Francis Malicdem

The Tigers have finally got the monkey off their back

This after the Tigers avenged their defeat in the hands of Pandas last season by turning the tables around this time 68-59 in the second gameday of the Season 9 Year 11 of the PinoyExchange.com Basketball League at the Finmann All Purpose Court in Makati City

    NEW RECRUITS DID WELL

New recuits Stewart Samson and Mark Duietcher Tan joined hands with Tigers' old reliable Jeff Santiago to help the league's heartbreak boys notch its first win in the tournament.

Santiago provided the spark in the early goings of the game as the Tigers were in a nip and tuck affair with the Pandas that saw neither team leading by more than 3 points.

However in the 3rd period, the Tigers made their move as they found their mark while the Pandas' shots weren't falling in.

The Tigers threatned to pull away in the payoff period as they took a 53-45 lead courtesy of 2 free throws from Gian Canilao

But the Pandas suddenly woke up and through the baskets of rookie Christian Sangalang and Jeremy dela Cruz, the Orangemen cut the deficit to just three at 55-52

The Tigers then showed their nerves of steel as Samson took over and with 2 key baskets in the run, the Tigers suddennly found themselves leading by 8 again at 62-54

with time down to just 3 minutes in the game, the Pandas again struck back and led by their prize catch rookie guard MJ Macapugay, they cut the Tigers' lead to just 5 at 62-57 with 2 minutes remaining

However Tan made his presence felt to his former team as he struck the dagger to their hearts with a clutch 3 pointer to give the Tigers a 65-57.

The Pandas then failed to convert their next possession as the Tigers' defense led by Dexter Ong and christian Manalang stopped the Pandas from converting thus preserving the win for the league's heartbreak kids

Santiago led the Tigers with 19 points while Macapugay carried the cudgels for the Pandas with 16.

    RUDE WELCOME

For the second time in their team history, Team Blupers opened their PEXBALL campaign against the league's newest team

And again, they gave the new team a rude welcom

Team Blupers relied on their experience to defeat Team Lynx 82-69 in the main game last Saturday.

The Blupers used a big second quarter run to pull away against the determined and pesky Lynx

league's top scorer Robert "Buckets" Rivera and sophomore forward JM "The Rampaging Bull" Fajardo starred in the run which saw the 29-28 lead of the Blupers balooned to a 47-37 lead at the half

The Lynx tried to cut the deficit to a single digit in the 2nd half led by this year's number 2 pick overall Aldrin Gregorio and Brian Kelly Chua but the Blupers led by veteran Jun Santos had an answer to every threat they made

The Lynx actually had the game close in the first period and early part of the second quarter as rookie Jeff Lim exploded for 16 points but lack of familiarity to each other killed the team as the game went on.

Rivera topscored for the Blupers with 18 followed by Fajardo with 13 while Lim scored the most for the debuting Lynx with 23

    The Scores:

    TIGERS 68- Santiago 19, Samson 17, Tan 11, Manalang 9, Canilao 9, Kuo 3, Alcaraz 0, Ong 0, Malicdem 0, Rapin 0

    HOYAS BITE DOWN ARSENALS
    Blupers, Tigers, Spartans remain undefeated
    Written by JP Abcede
    Additional Notes from Kiko Malicdem

In an unprecedented first in PEXBALL history, games on June 2 were held on different venues.

In keeping with the theme, Hoyas also scored a first, thwarting Arsenal, 91-86, at the PUP San Juan Gym in what can be considered an upset for the ages. The former underdogs now find themselves on top along with fellow unbeaten squads Blupers, Tigers, and Spartans.

The grey-jerseyed hounds clawed their way back from a double-digit deficit going into the last five minutes of the encounter as rookies Raphael Fabie and Arsenio Galanida Jr. took charge in the come-from-behind win.

Fabie led the Hoyas with 28 big points including 11 in the payoff period while Galanida chipped in with 17. Robinson Abalos meanwhile was the top offensive player for the Arsenals with 26

Blupers and Tigers won in similar fashion against their respective opponents at the RFM Gym to secure their second victory this season. Defending champion Spartans continued their winning run, mastering a shorthanded Packers.

Finally, Pandas elbowed past Titans in a physical skirmish for their first win of the season.

Blupers emerge against Lions in OT

Blupers needed five more minutes to dispose the luckless Lions in a high-scoring affair, 97-87.

Jinno Ramirez emerged as an unlikely hero, sandwiching a Jun Santos basket with two incursions to the middle of the lane to give the Papa J’s-backed squad a comfortable 93-84 spread with less than a minute to go in overtime.

High scoring guard Robert Rivera led the Blupers with 26 points while rookie Randy Cabaltera and veteran Marcelo Santos Jr. combined for 29 points and 22 rebounds

Lions led by as many as 12 after its 1st round pick Alexander Bacani scored on a putback from a Vince Cortez miss, 48-36, with 7:54 to go in the third quarter. Blupers ate up the gap and took the lead, 67-66, with a 7-0 spurt to start the fourth period.

From there, both squads traded shots up to the final moments of regulation. JC Yumul tied the count at 79-all with 13 seconds left, grabbing the offensive board from an Bacani attempt and netting a foul from Gerby Ventura.

Yumul was not able to complete the three-point play but Bacani was there to return the favor with a carom of his own. The rookie was sent to the line by JM Fajardo with two ticks to go. Alas, fate was not kind to the Lions as he flubbed his two tries.

Ventura’s attempt to beat the buzzer at the other end went high and wide.

    Tigers hold ground against Lynx

Tigers heaved a sigh of relief as they escaped the upset axe against newcomer Lynx, 56-55.

The veteran feline squad were on the verge of closing the contest as they were ahead by six, 56-50, courtesy of two Gian Canilao freethrows, three minutes and change remaining. However, those would be his team’s final tally as the Tigers went without a field goal in the final four and a half minutes.

Lynx inched closer with a MJ Sito three-pointer and a freethrow each coming from Sito and team captain Hardy Espineda to trim the gap to one, 55-56, 39 seconds left. The rookie point guard then made a spectacular play on the defensive end, blocking Jeff Santiago’s jumper, but this was put into naught as Victor Abenes missed a breakaway layup and was forced to foul Tigers’ captain Dexter Ong to freeze the clock at ten seconds.

Ong clanked both of his charities, giving Lynx a chance to set one last play. Sito, however, had a case of mistaken identity, passing the ball to the waiting hands of Santiago.

Santiago led the Tigers with 15 markers while Canilao and Samson had 13 and 9 respectively.

Lynx were virtually ahead the start of the match until they relinquished the upperhand after they let the Tigers unearth a 13-0 run in the second quarter. The yellow-clad squad had a lead as high as 11, 40-29, after Christian Manalang followed up his own miss, 2:26 in the third.

    Spartans reign over Packers five

Spartans held Packers scoreless for five minutes in the fourth quarter to put away their five-man strong opponent, 89-65.

Big man Jericho Ilagan led the Spartans with 21 points while Tristan Taboac had 19 for the Packers.

The defending champions were tickled pink when they faced an extremely undermanned Packers squad, but the task proved to be anything but easy. Packers held the lead in the first quarter before Spartans overtook them in the next period. However, Packers would not wilt that easily as Taboac and Nat Balanza kept the score close in the third canto.

    Titans pander to Pandas

Pandas found their groove late in the contest to ground Titans, 80-72.

MJ Macapugay, Paul Dungao, and Albert Chua finally had their shots sinking in the payoff period of a game-long give-and-take affair with Titans. Macapugay scorched a three-pointer from the wings for the pivotal basket, while Jun Florendo made a key defensive stop with a steal.

Macapugay led the onslaught of the Pandas with 24 points while Chua had 11. Florendo and Jeremy Dela Cruz remained the pillars of Pandas’ defense as they combined for 21 rebounds and 5 blocks.

PEXBALL Action resumes on June 16 with all 10 teams seeing action again with Hoyas meeting the Packers, Pandas versus Spartans, Blupers battling Arsenals, Lynx against Titans and Tigers versus Lions.

Venue for the first 3 games on the said date will be announced soon while the last two games will be held at RFM Gym.

To avoid tanking of games just to be placed in a better group. Only Seeds 1 to 4 will know what group they will belong to. SEED 1 and 3 in Division 1 .... SEED 2 and 4 Division 2. Groups of Seed 5 to 10 will be determined by draw lots after which the original format will be followed.

    SATURDAY SHOCKER ESPESYAL
    Lynx upset Titans
    Hoyas, Tigers remain unbeaten
    by Kiko Malicdem

The new kids on the block, Team Lynx, provided the biggest news last Saturday as it nipped Team Titans 71-70 in what is considered the biggest upset so far in the Season 9 Year 11 of the PinoyExchange.com Basketball League at the RFM Gym

Facing a double digit deficit at the start of the fourth period, the Lynx miraculously chipped the lead of the Titans and leaned on "Mighty" Tor Abenes' basket with 2 seconds left to secure the franchise's first victory

The basket by Abenes was the first time that the Lynx tasted the lead in the game since the early stages of the first quarter.

The Titans appeared to have game in their pockets as they built a 65-49 lead with over 8 minutes remaining but the Lynx showed their never say die attitude to cut the lead down to single digits.

Clutch baskets by guard MJ Sito and Abenes helped the Lynx inch closer while the defense of Frebe Denesado and Brian Kelly Chua provided the spark for the light blue squad.

Chua despite scoring only 1 point , was amazing on the other end of the court as he registered an eye-popping 5 steals and 11 assists for the Lynx

It was a sorry defeat for the Titans, who missed the services of reigning MVP Michael Bryan Soliven, who had to attend some personal matters thus missing the game.

The Titans had a chance to secure the win as they were up by 1 70-69 when center Gerald Evangelista was fouled with 20 seconds left.

However Evangelista missed his two freebies paving way for the Abenes' winning basket.

With no timeouts left, the Titans were forced to throw a Hail Mary pass which failed to find the mark

The basket by Abenes erased Titans' painful defeat two weeks ago against Team Tigers wherein he missed a breakaway layup with 10 seconds left which could have given the Lynx the win.

In the first game, Team Hoyas registered its best start in its franchise history as it got its 3rd straight victory at the expense of the struggling Team Packers 92-82 at the Acropolis Gym Mandaluyong.

off season recruit Joby Primicias waxed hot in the first half as he almost single handedly carried the Hoyas on his back.

Primicias had a season high 18 points in the first quarter alone and finished with 27, including 7 3-pointers, at the end of the first half wherein he outplayed all the defenders thrown to him by the Packers.

The hot hands of Primicias enabled the Hoyas to build a 56-34 lead

However the Packers refused to simply role over and got back on its groove with Tristan Taboac, Beng Rocela and rookie Mike Brua leading the way which saw the lead of the Hoyas chopped to just single digits as 88-80

But the Hoyas played it cool and time ran out for the Packers, who now fall to their 3 straight defeat, a first since 2008.

In the main game, the anticipated close battle of two jungle warriors turned out to be the other way around as Team Tigers outclassed Team Lions 87-63

The Tigers finally played their best game in the season so far as it confused the Lions with its defense thus enabling them to get the lead up to as much as 28 points in the game.

The win spoiled what was supposed to be a grand return of PEXBALL veteran Malbert Reyes who was eager to show his stuff for this team.

Jeffrey Santiago led the Tigers with 16 points while Christian Manalang finally exploded as he registered 15 markers.

Pat "Det" Cobrador did a magnificent job in quarterbacking for the Tigers as he dished out a game high 10 assists.

Rookies Alex Bacani and Abeth Pinili were the top scorers for the Black team as they combined for 25 points but it was enough for the Lions who now fall to the league's worst 23 game losing streak which started in the semifinals of Season 6 in 2009.

    HOT and COLD
    Hoyas, Lions streak continues

    Arsenals pull down Blupers
    By Francis Malicdem

The Team Hoyas continued its amazing winning run as it defeated its rival Team Pandas 66-62 in the continuation of the elimination phase of the Season 9 Year 11 of the PinoyExchange.com Basketball League at the Ronac Art Center last Saturday.

Off season recruit Joby Primicias continued what he left off last week as he torched the hoops with 26 points including 10 in the 3rd period that helped Hoyas restore order after the Pandas threatened to take over the game.

But the biggest shot for the Hoyas came from their 2nd round rookie pick Brix Catipon, who was playing his first game in the league after missing the team's first three matches due to unforseen circumstances.

Catipon scored all of his 8 points in the final period including a big 3 point shot with a minute remaining that gave the Hoyas a 63-56 lead.

It was the Hoyas first franchise win over the Pandas who had dominated the Gray team starting in Season 7

However this season, with team captain Arvy Trinidad initiating some off season transactions, the Hoyas now find themselves on top of the team standings, an unfamiliar place for the franchise who was handled back then by veteran Ryan Kung.

    FINALLY

After leaving the venue frustrated in their first 2 games, the Team Arsenals finally went home smiling as they barged to the win column by defeating the previously undefeated TEam Blupers 71-57.

The Arsenals waxed hot in the first period and at the same time frustrating the Blupers with their defense and this resulted to a 16-7 lead for the White team at the end of the first canto.

The Arsenals maintained their lead throughout the ball game with balance scoring and when the Blupers threatned to turn the game around in the fourth period, the Arsenals simply refuse to give in.

With the lead down to just five points at 50-45 through the efforts of veteran Bridson Castronuevo, The Arsenals went to Vito Delos Reyes as the Arsenals scored the next six points to put the game away at 56-45 with less than 5 minutes remaining.

The loss snapped the Blupers winning streak to two and to make matters worse, The team failed to finish the game with their first round pick Gerby Ventura who limped out of the game with 3 minutes remaining in the game.

Delos Reyes led the Arsenals with 15 markers followed by resident offensive firepower Robinson Abalos who finished with 13.

    COLD

Team Lions entered the game versus Team Titans hoping to snap the infamous league worst 23 game losing streak and JC Yumul showed the determination by waxing hot early drilling consecutive trifecta which immediate gave the Lions the upperhand in the first period

But the Titans settled down and with Dan "BonBon" De Guzman and Marlon "Ninong" Franco duplicating what Yumul had done, the game became an exciting one with neither team able to pull away from the other.

The Lions then sensed blood in the 3rd period with Yumul completed a rare 4 point play which gave the Lions a 39-35 lead.

At that moment, Yumul was perfect from the 3 point area after 6 tries.

This inspired the Lions who then went on a rampage and built a 47-39 lead with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd period

But a 6-0 run towards the end of the period kept the Titans within striking distance of the Black team.

The Lions then opened the final quarter with back to back baskets from rookie Alron Bacani but the Titans countered it with baskets from reigning MVP Michael Soliven, Bonbon De Guzman and Joel Ilao to tie the score at 51.

Suddenly, the Lions' guns fell silent and Titans used this opportunity to take a 57-51 lead through the efforts of Soliven and Ilao

After a three point play from Lions' off season recruit Vince Cortez which saw the lead cut down to three at 57-54, The Titans again struck hard with a 6-0 run to give the Purple team a 63-54 lead with less than 4 minutes remaining.

The Lions then made a run to cut the deficit to just three points at 61-64 with 2 minutes remaining
But lack of communication and Soliven's calm approach in the free throw line derailed the Lions' plans to inch closer thus resulting to another heartbreaking defeat

    VETERANS POWER TIGERS, PACKERS
    Spartans remain undefeated
    By JP Abcede

Old hands Dexter Ong and Mike Rivera proved they still have spring in their legs, scoring key baskets for their respective teams en route to wins in the ongoing PEXBALL eliminations on June 30 at the Ronac Playground.

Meanwhile, Spartans kept their record immaculate, upending Blupers, 86-78. This victory came at a cost after Jericho Ilagan injured his finger in the third quarter and had to be rushed to the hospital for x-rays. As of now, his status remains to be day-to-day.

Tigers tie with idle Hoyas on top with four wins, while Spartans are right behind with three. Packers stand on even ground with same day losers Arsenal and Lynx with a 1-3 standing. Finally, Blupers dropped their second straight after winning their first two.

    Ong scores on time

Ong showed his steadiness in the clutch, scoring a twinner at the endgame buzzer, as Tigers escaped past Arsenal, 64-63.

After Arsenal Pao Escober made the most out of a broken play with an inside basket with 11 seconds remaining to give his squad the upperhand, 63-62, the Tigers designed one last play to keep their unbeaten run intact.

Vic Alcaraz handed the ball to Jeff Santiago, who found Ong in the right shoulder. The veteran forward then rushed towards the rim evading defenders, releasing the ball just in time as it rolls in while the buzzer sounded. The Tigers bench then erupted in celebration and whooped it up, flocking Ong, who remained lying on the floor, savoring the moment.

Former MVP Stewart Samson led the Tigers with 23 markers while Jeff Santiago and Christian Manalang contributed with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Rookie RV Vicencio was the main man for the Arsenals as he scored a personal season high 30 points including 7 three-pointers

The yellow-clad crew were in the driver’s seat in the first half where they had their biggest margin, 33-22, just before the half ended. Vicencio scored ten points in the third quarter, who was also responsible in giving Arsenal their first taste of the lead, 45-44, with a layup at the middle of the lane, three seconds to go in the third quarter.

The rookie guard kept the white jerseys in step, scoring the first 12 points of Arsenal in the fourth, the last one coming from three freethrows after he was fouled by Allen Samson from outside the three-point line, 2:41 left, and Tigers ahead, 58-57. Two freebies courtesy of Samson from a Robinson Abalos foul with 36 ticks on the clock made it 62-59 for the Tigers.

Abalos was able to fish Gian Canilao’s fifth foul with 27 seconds to go, but only managed to make one of two. Escober then intercepted the ball at the backcourt as Ong fouled Vicencio, :18 remaining. Vicencio swished his first try to trim the gap to one, and clanked his second. Allen Samson mishandled the rebound as the ball went out of bounds, setting the Escober basket.

    Packers scrape first win

The ageless Mike Rivera scored the telling bucket for the Packers, whose club notched their first win, edging past the pesky Lynx, 65-60.

Jayson dela Cruz found perennial teammate Rivera at the lefthand corner for an open midrange jumper for the go-ahead basket, 60-59, :58 in the clock. Tristan Taboac, Nat Balanza, and dela Cruz capped the game from the 15-foot line.

Tabaoc led the Packers with 19 points followed by Dela Cruz and Rivera with 12 and 10 markers.

Victor Abenes topscored for the Lynx with 16 points while Brian Kelly Chua dished out another outstanding performance as he finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 7 steals and 8 assists.

Lynx took advantage of the shorthanded Packers, relying on their running game to erect an 18-point lead in the first half with Abenes and Aldrin Gregorio at the helm. Eugene Rivera netted a three-pointer to give the new kids on the block a 19-point lead, 43-24, 4:44 in the third period.

However, Packers had other things in mind as they uncorked a 17-3 run to end the penultimate quarter. In that sequence, Rivera completed a three-point play to trim the spread to single digits, 38-46, a minute to go in the period.

Glenn Javier started a 7-0 run with a short hook to come within two, 53-55, 3:57 of the fourth canto. Taboac then went against the whole Lynx five to score a transition basket to tie the count more than 30 seconds later. dela Cruz coverted a three-pointer off a backdoor cut to give Packers its first time on the lead with 2:19 to go.

    Spartans sneak past Blupers

Jenkin Quiroga was the man of the moment for Spartans, waxing hot in the fourth period to beat Blupers, 86-78.

Quiroga scorched for five points in a quick 7-0 spurt for an 80-69 cushion with less than a minute to go. A furious fightback by Blupers trimmed the gap to nearly half, 75-81, in 29 seconds. However, Spartans recovered the distance just as quick, with Quiroga splitting his trip at the charity line, then completing a steal and a field goal to put away the game for good.

Quiroga finished with 24 points to lead his team in scoring while Emer Esparrago scored 21.

Rookie Gerby Ventura, meanwhile, led the Blupers with 20.

Blupers took advantage of the situation after Jericho Ilagan suffered an injured finger in the third quarter. Besides the elder Ilagan, Spartans had to miss Jensen Ilagan in the final stretch as he drove his brother to a nearby hospital.

After Blupers threatened to within two, 62-64, midway in the fourth, Quiroga and Allan Dator conspired for an 8-2 run to give the reigning champions an eight-point lead, 72-64. The closest the Papa J’s-backed squad could go near from there was four after Ventura and Darwin Padua swished quick baskets, 69-73, as the game goes into the final two minutes.

    SPARTANS HANG TOUGH
Rookies shine for Arsenals, Lynx and Packers
    by Francis Malicdem

The team Spartans rode on the coatails of its veteran players to escape a 68-65 win over the hard fighting Team Hoyas in the Season 9 and Year 11 of PEXBALL at the RFM GYM Saturday night.

Jensen and Omar Ilagan provided the key baskets in the end game to help the Spartans maintain its winning streak and likewise grab the hold of the top spot in the team standings.

It was a close game althrough out with the Hoyas exploding first leading the game at 9-4 through the efforts of its 6'4 gentle giant Waf Fabie

But the Spartans struck back led by last season's sixth man awardee Norman Buentipo to take the driver seat at 33-24 near the end of the 2nd period before the Hoyas made its move and cut the deficit to just three points at halftime 33-30.

The Hoyas finally took control in the 2nd half with Joby Primicias exploding to give his team at 49-46 lead

But the Spartans showed their poise and kept the game close until they were able to tie the game at 62 all after an Emer Esparrago basket with 2 minutes remaining.

Primcias then broke the deadlock immediately with a 3 pointer to give the Hoyas some breathing room at 65-62

The Hoyas sensing victory at that time tightned its defense with Arvy Trinidad blocking an almost breakaway layup by Esparrago to preserve the lead for his team

However the Hoyas made a defensive blunder as they left the younger Ilagan free near the shaded lane.

With time down to less than one minute and holding a 65-64, the Hoyas hurriedly took the shot and the Spartans grabbed the leather setting up Jensen with another basket that gave the Spartans the lead with 11 ticks left

After suing for time, the Hoyas got the ball to Trinidad who then fired a 3 pointer that missed the mark afterwhich the Hoyas fouled newly shaved Ilagan who made his two freebies

The Hoyas had one last chance to tie the game but they missed their 3 point attempt as the buzzer sounded.

    Arsenals back on track

The Team Arsenals meanwhile got back on its winning ways defeating the pesky Team Titans 83-76 in the opening game of the Saturday quadruple header.

Arvie Vicencio made a clutch play with less than two minutes remaining securing the win for his team who saw their 24 point 4th quarter lead vanished into thin air with two minutes remaining.

Game winning layup by RV Vicencio that broke the hearts of every Titans supporter

The game started close as bulky Joel Ilao carried the Titans in his shoulders giving his team a 31-26 lead however things changed at the start of the 3rd period when Arsenals found its range led by Jojo Escanlar to break the game wide open from a 39-38 lead to a big 70-46 at the end of the said period.

But the Titans came back charging and a big 26 to 3 run to cut the lead to just 1 point at 73-72 with 2 minutes and 13 seconds left.

Vicencio then rose to the occasion and sliced the Titans' defense into two as he converted on a layup to give his team some space at 75-72

The Arsenals then added on to their lead with 2 free throws from Robinson Abalos and a basket from Ronny Puno giving the white team a 79-72 lead with 1 minute and 6 seconds left in the game.

Abalos led the Arsenals in offense with 21 followed by Vicencio and Escanlar who finished with 18 and 16 points respectively

    ...and the streak continues...

The frustration continued at the Lions camp as they again fall to another heartbreaker, this time at the hands of the new team Lynx 90-86 in overtime.

Leading throughout the match Lions appreared to have the game in their hands leading at 70-64 with 2 minutes left

But the Lynx again showed their never say die attitude and came back in time with Brian Kelly Chua issuing a good pass for a Frebe Denesado basket with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 73.

The Lions had a chance to take the game but they muffed their final attempt thus extending the game with 5 more minutes.

In the overtime, the Lynx got their 2nd wind and despite Denesado fouling out in the game, they stood tough as Thor Abenes and MJ Sito delivered clutch baskets

Abenes scored the 6 of the team's first 10 points in Overtime to give his team an 83-81 lead with 2 minutes left however the Lions tied it with 2 free throws from Alex Bacani with 1 minute and 42 seconds left

    ...back to back...

Team Packers survived a fourth quarter scare from the Team Pandas winning the game at 74-70 in the last game of the day.

With the Packers up by as much as 18 points in the final canto through the efforts of Glenn Javier, Mike Rivera and Jun Valdez, the Pandas launched a comeback to grab the lead at 68-67 on a basket by Jun Florendo with 1 minute remaining

After a Mike Brua turnover, the Pandas thought they had the game in their hands but the tight defense of the Packers' Chody Felix and Tristan Taboac gave the Packers the lead and again frustrating the Pandas.

The Pandas actually had a chance to tie the game but lost focus in the end, leaving Brua open for an easy basket with 4 seconds left

With the win, the Packers notched its second straight win after falling three straight at the start of the tournament.
