    Far Eastern University

Hello my fellow Tamaraws! This is a thread which welcomes all FEU studes and grads of the different FEU campuses- Main, FERN, FEU-NRMF and FEU- East Asia.

I'm opening this thread so we can share some thoughts about our beloved Alma Mater. Ok, I admit, we don't belong to any international rankings but there are still a lot of things that we can be proud of with our school. Our alumni has proven that it is a force to reckon with in Board exams, school competitions, etc. So definitely we're no push over.

Let me stress that this is not to prove that we have a "great" school or say that we are better than others, it's just to help us appreciate our school and our alumni's achievements and continue to inspire FEU's present students to strive harder to maintain or improve our school's quality of education.

So share your proud and sometimes not so proud memories, ideas and thoughts about our beloved school, FEU.

    FEU wins CHED national award
    Updated May 21, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) bagged two awards at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) 2008 National Search for Best Student Services Program Award. FEU was honored with the “Outstanding Student Services Program” (national level) and “Best Student Services Program in National Capital Region” (regional level) by CHED.

Fourteen regional winners from public and private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) all over the Philippines participated in the event at the National College for Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) Assembly Hall of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City last April 17.

“We are thankful for your recognition of the commitment and collaborative efforts of the FEU Student Affairs and Services (FEU-SAS) Team in providing quality and better student services from admission to graduation,” said FEU president Dr. Lydia Echauz after she received the symbolic cheques worth P200,000, glass trophy, and bronze plaque from CHED Commissioners led by Chairman Emmanuel Angeles.

A business plan, prepared by a team from the Far Eastern University (FEU), won the "Coolest Idea’’ award at the recent 22nd Annual Entrepreneurship Conference and Battle of the Business Plans at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Coco sugar, a coconut juice-based healthy sugar, was packaged for business by FEU’s Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance (IABF) Dean Danny Cabulay and management students, Giancarlo Capco, Katchela Macapulay, and Jean Paula Dula.

"It seeks to address the problem of obesity and other ailments or disorders associated with being overweight, regarded as a modern worldwide epidemic," Capco explained. "Over three million people in the Philippines depend on the coconut industry. Thus, this seeks to revive greater interest in an industry where the Philippines is a major global player."

Among 50 semifinalists from top universities in the US and around the world, FEU’s coco sugar was highly favored by judges because of its comprehensive and high-impact presentation, excellent responses during the questions and answers session, and innovative product concept. The judges were from venture capitalists General Catalyst Partners and IDG Ventures, law firm Foley and Lardner, and Microsoft’s MSN Spaces.

Coco sugar also placed second in three of the categories - People’s Choice, Biggest Market Opportunity, and Most Likely to Succeed.

Aside from FEU’s Coco Sugar, entries from Harvard Business School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale, Wharton, a Chinese university also made it to the finals. These were:

    * Biggest Market Opportunity Award - Avanti Metals (trading new metals for military clientele)

    * Strongest Team Award - Cheese for Change (exotic cheese from yak milk produced by Tibetan nomads represented by MBA students and diplomats from China)

    * Most Likely to Succeed Award - Virtual Property Manager (online property management system)

    * MSN Best Spaces Design Award - Prize4Life (foundation to launch competition for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [ALS] research)

    * People’s Choice - Prize4Life and Cheese for Change (a tie-vote given by the audience at Spangler Auditorium).

This is the second year that a Philippine team has won in this tilt. Last year, FEU’s entry called BoardTech bagged the "Most Likely to Have a Global Impact Award" and the "People’s Choice Award." BoardTech proposed the use of construction panel boards made from recycled scrap metals.

IABF’s Level 3 accreditation allows Cabulay and FEU to design a curriculum to flex his and the students’ creative muscles and out-of-the-box way of thinking which have brought them two Harvard wins to date.

"Exposing our students to this kind of prestigious event helps them acquire a stronger sense of identity and project themselves more confidently into the future," commented FEU board trustee Gianna Montinola, "We will always encourage our students and faculty to join these competitions both locally and internationally."

Led by the Entrepreneurship Club of Harvard this year, the Entrepreneurial Idol Competition is an annual project of the Harvard Business School.

Three other Philippines entries made it to the semifinals. These were Sanitary Aqua Vendo which advocates prevention of urinary tract infection among women through a watervending machine for public toilets; Ethereal (paper coffins); and Gilead (activated carbon-based stomach remedy).

    nice one!

    The glory days are back
    FEU Dance Company
    By Angelo G. Garcia

The sound of applause and the bright hypnotic theater lights bring sweet memories to the Far Eastern University Folk Dance Group, back to those heady days in Europe when the crowd would enthusiastically cheer for them after they perform their colorful numbers onstage.

Those days will forever be engraved in the company’s rich history.

Today, after so many years of waiting on the sidelines burying further their international fame, the young members of the group are setting their goal straight — to once again dance on the world stage.

“We dream of performing internationally, not necessarily in a competition, but just to perform on the world stage. This isn’t far from happening,” member Ariane Fowler shares. “The only problem is ‘yung sponsors, kaya hindi kami matuloy-tuloy.”

In 1957, the group was started as the FEU Folk Dance Group by the school’s physical education (PE) department. It initially recruited 100 dancers who were then trained by Philippine dance authority Corazon Ińigo.

In 1959, with support from school officials and other generous individuals, they were also able to perform in Europe where they impressed the French at the the Theatre des Nations and on to Theatre de Champ Elysees in Paris, France. Their fame echoed throughout Europe, receiving invitations from nine other countries in the region. They won first honors in Caceres and the Balearic Folk Dance Competitions in Spain.

More invitations followed including the Chicago Fair in the US, even on Broadway, just to name a few. But all these invitations were turned down because of various reasons.

Today, known as the FEU Dance Company (FEUDC) under the school’s President Committee on Culture, the company is dabbling into almost every dance genre possible, from jazz, to ballet to hip hop. The group also joins as many competitions as they can in a year, performing in various concerts and special events, and proving to the local crowd and dance community that they are once again ready to reclaim the fame they once had.

The company is now gradually reaping the rewards of their hard work, harvesting medals and trophies from different contests, from contemporary to street dance competitions. Just recently, they bested eight schools in the Body Wars Dance Theater Competition organized by San Beda College.

But despite all the recognition they have received they still manage to be humble and appreciate things in life. “Win or lose, we never forget to pray. Others pray before the competition to ask God to give them the prize but once they lose, wala na, nakalimutan na si God. We lost so many times already but we never forgot to pray,” Fowler says.

    DANCING SCHOLARS

All the members of FEUDC are scholars (full and partial) of the school and they are proud that their love for dancing does not affect their studies. For good measure, they are strictly required to maintain an average or they could be stripped off of their scholarship and membership to the group.

For them, extra curricular activities are very important to students. They do not only make the student develop his/her skills but also to keep them away from bad vices.

“Regular students would just waste their time during break time. We however make use of our breaktime wisely, aakyat kami sa studio para magrehearse tapos balik sa klase. Nakaka pag build kami ng community of dancers, yung friendship, para na kaming magkakapatid,” explains member Bobby Andrew Calubong.

“The wall between seniors and trainees, binebreak namin. Because as a senior, how can you encourage someone to dance with you or to grow if intimidated sila. Hindi naman namin iniimpose na you have to respect me, as your superior, parang, nature na lang yun na respect as human beings,” 19-year old Mass Communication student Joie Elolin says.

From creating a community, to juggling studies and dancing, to winning competitions, FEUDC is proving that hard work can take them a long way, hopefully to the place where their predecessors once danced to make their country really proud.

    Kick awesome!

I actually believe that we should have our own sub-forum here on PEx. I mean, we are double, triple, or way more the population of other school on the sub-forum. But at least, even thou we're not on the sub-forum, FEU is making a positive battle to different threads here.

I'm a product of FEU-IN. We may not be on one of top performing schools on the recent Nursing Licensure Exam (NLE), but we surely have an impact and a place on the Nursing scene.

    - We consistently produced several topnotchers, recently on the November NLE (with one of my batchmate being on the top 4).

    - We produced the most number of passers on the NLE. (given that other school are also on our bracket - 1000+ examinees, and yet, we have a high passing rate <79% on our batch>)

    - We have the First Virtual Nursing Lab, patterned after the standards of the Joint Commission.

    - Our graduates occupy some of the most important positions on different hospitals here in the Philippines, (on St. Luke's, Asian Hospital, PGH, Phil. Heart Center, and a lot more), on review centers, on nursing schools, and on hospitals abroad. I had an interview with a nurse recruiter in the US and upon seeing my educational background, she told me that my school is well-known in the US.

    - and more to be accomplished and more room for improvements and success.

BTW, I've read from a fan site in Facebook (or somewhere else) that FEU is now an "International University". What exactly is the story behind this? I mean, is FEU really an international university now?

Maybe those whose still in PiYU can help me with this.

^^ well done to the students and faculty of the IN.

Tough times are ahead especially with the growing population of nurses and the economic issues plaguing the world. We all have to endure it, even our batch, it took time, but we got through.

Just keep working hard and don't give up, your FEU Nursing Alumni, is famous worldwide, its reputation is unblemished, so wherever you go, as long as you do your best as well, you'll always be welcome.

    thanks for trying zodiac.

if you allow me to be honest, personally, i'm not expecting that we'd be granted one, (for reasons i rather not say, but assuredly, it's not us) but it may help your cause if we could get our schoolmates here in Pex to unite in the FEU threads that already exist.

thanks also for posting some of our schoolmates' recent achievements.
    keep it coming.

we should expect PEX to be fair & realistic, FEU has been an underrated school eversince but we know better and the truth is FEU is really a reputable & prestigious university

we should have our own sub-forum just like CSB which is relatively a new school
