I actually don't recommend Unicorn as a gateway Gundam series. The first episode alone references a lot from the original series up to Char's Counterattack. There are also UC-centric terms that get flown around like Newtypes, Minovsky particles and psychoframes.

If anything, I'd recommend you any of the AUs, like Wing, G, X, TurnA, SEED (forget about Destiny) and 00. Each series has its own story and universe and tastes may vary. If you want to engage yourself with UC titles (like Unicorn), there are a lot, not to mention, most UC titles are hard to find.

But go ahead and watch Unicorn despite what I said. Who knows, you may find yourself interested in the franchise?

Apparently, the Laplace box contains the missing clause from the Federation charter in UC 0000 which essentially gave Spacenoids the right to rule themselves in space.

The first Federation president was assassinated by his son and his Earth-born elite supporters who wanted the Earth to be in control of everything.

Finally, I got to watch the 1st episode and I'm proud to say that I'm a happy Zeek. Definitely my preferred brand of Gundam. UC all the way! Though I feel I have to brush up on my UC, by watching the later UC titles like Char's Counter.

I love the animation and the 80's hairdo. I'm looking forward to the succeeding episodes.

I just watched ep1 yesterday and I was really blown away.

I think in terms of animation, Unicorn is of high quality, every scene was well made and it did give off that nostalgic UC-ish vibe which I really enjoyed.

Story wise, i think it did good, for any uc follower it was sort of a refresher course, talking about events like the one year war, the gryps confilict and the two neo-zeon uprisings.

I also liked how they mentioned it in the anaheim history class, and not with the usage of footage.

Though if you are new to the time line, i think its a bit too much, but yeah, at least you can get some of the info on the events and key people of the UC timeline.

I liked how Banagher can be absent minded and then change into an able bodied person, taking on those Marida and co. and actually winning against soldiers.

Action wise, it didn't disappoint, i think it was able to balance out the story and the battles.

The ms battles were excellent as well, it was the first time for me to root for the Jegan when the Stark Jegan went head to head with the Kshatriya. too bad it lost.

I also liked the scene where they actually animated the pilot's hands using the controls, i think it was a nice touch.

Another point in the ms battles is that it's fast paced, but you can see the ms' moving most of the time and not just seeing a blurred white dot zigzagging.

It was a good start imo, from the remembrance of the past events of the uc timeline to the introduction of the characters and to the revelation of the plot. It had every element to keep viewers wanting to see the next ep, and i hope it continues like that.

audrey/mineva saying "gundam" when the unicorn entered nt-d mode at the end was a nice touch

Riddhe Marcenas (the blond-haired ReZEL pilot) will later use the Banshee, which is a darker-colored version of the Unicorn and its V-fin is based on a lion's mane. The Banshee is more powerful than its brother unit but lacks the Laplace's Box.

It seems he has some incompatibility issues with the Banshee's NT-D system which combined with his unstable feelings towards Banagher and Mineva causes him to go insane/berserk and end up killing a certain female pilot.

The Unicorn is later upgraded into Full Armor Unicorn. Its psycoframe is enhanced and is now green. It's jam-packed with a beam magnum rifle (with 10 extra e-packs), 2 vulcan guns, 4 beam sabers, 2 hyper bazookas, 8 triple grenade launchers, 2 triple large missile launchers, 6 beam gatling guns, and 3 shields. The shields can also be launched and remote-controlled via the psycoframe, similar to the Nu Gundam's fin funnels.

Took you quite a while. I was expecting you to be commenting the moment it came out. Guess you're too busy in the real world?

For a nameless grunt MS pilot, he did a pretty good job of staying alive longer than the other two. But you don't frickin' mess with the MS that has the funnels.

Yeah, that was definitely neat. At least we now know that the pilot can do something else than step on the pedal and push the levers.

For an OVA this good, doing something like that is cheap.

What sucks is that we have to wait quite a long time for the next
    one.

You're not the only one who is mentioning Mineva Zabi across the nets when they saw Audrey's character design.

And yes, you can't deny having that "OHHHH YEAAAAH!!!" feeling when the Unicorn transformed to Destroy Mode.

Oh god. Baka na-memorize ko na yung buong episode 1 even before 2 comes out

Lovin' the 80's look of the characters hehe

And on a slightly different note, here's my UC office desk guardians, the RX-78-2 and the Unicorn Destroy Mode

(Yeah sorry, I know this is an anime forum, not a model-kit thread. Just wanted to show the size difference between the two hehe )

Imagine the rage if Full Frontal and the Sinanju does not appear. Worse, I can imagine him appearing at the end of Episode 2. Just like how the Unicorn launched at the end of Episode 1.

Seriously, why the hell do we have to wait for so long for the next one?

  12. #32
quite late but i finally saw the first episode.

    major joygasm.

i have a feeling that "audrey" is related to the zabis. she's a spitting image of mineva.

Pretty nice indeed. I have no background of UC found myslef grasping things in episode 1 but the plot is a good reboot of the old colony vs Earth storyline. Animation is top-notch as the colors don't stand out and blends well with the background and not cell-shaded compared to Seed and perhaps, 00.
