Lea's fans hail the theater artist that she is. She's got this consistent voice that makes her performances almost predictable but nonetheless impressive. She's an established talent abroad, however the Filipino's admiration for her is largely due to the fact that she made it abroad-- not only abroad, but in the US.

Regine's fans on the other hand celebrate her range and versatility, her impeccable performance that leaves you in awe. However, she has not really made a mark in the US or Europe. But she is regarded as the premiere female artist in the country largely due to the fact that she really sings well.

It doesn't mean that when people pay 7,000 pesos or so for a seat in your concert, you're on top. It doesn't mean that when you're on Broadway, you're on top. But it does say a lot about your talent.

djcharmed: do u really think Mariah or Whitney aspire for Broadway? Not because it's got some prestige to it means that every performer aspires for it. For starters, we don't really know if they do. We don't have the facts.

    1) Filipino talent walked tall on the London stage when Ms. Lea Salonga capped her seventh month of playing 'Miss Saigon' by winning as Best Actress in a Musical Performance at the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards held at the Dominion Theatre on April 8, 1990. She won along with 'Miss Saigon' co-star Jonathan Pryce as best actor in a musical.
The award once more underscored Lea's stature as a world-class singer-actress. It was the first major recognition in acting won by a Filipino talent abroad. She was also the first Asian ever to have won the much-coveted Olivier Award established in 1976 and now regarded as the highlight of every theatrical year in London.

Ms. Lea Salonga won over veteran actresses Elaine Paige for 'Anything Goes', Patricia Hodge for 'Noel and Gertie' and Judy Kuhn for 'Metropolis'.

    2)

    3) Last June 2, 1991, Ms. Lea Salonga made headlines as she won the 'Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Musical' trophy at the Tony Awards. Lea's co-star Jonathan Pryce, who essayed the role of the Engineer, brought home the Best Actor (in a musical) award. Hinton Battle won his third featured or supporting actor trophy for his role as the best friend of Kim's lover Chris, played by Willy Falk.

    4)

    5) The Outer Critics' Circle Award
On May 24, 1991, Ms. Lea Salonga was declared 'Best Actress in a Musical' (Miss Saigon) by the Outer Critics' Circle, an organization of New York critics for out-of-town newspapers with national circulation.

    The Drama Desk Award
Ms. Lea Salonga was also named 'Best Actress in a Musical' (Miss Saigon) by the Drama Desk, an association of theater critics, editors and reporters on the 19th of May 1991.

    Theater World Award
Ms. Lea Salonga was also named 'Best New Talent in Broadway' by a pool of critics which honor newcomers in the Great White way.

    6) Aliw Awards' Best Child Performer for 1980, 1981 and 1982
Tinig Awards' Best Child Singer for 1983 and 1984
Consumer Awards' Best Child Artist for 1983 and 1984
Cecil Awards' Best Child Vocalist for 1984
    The Presidential Award of Merit
Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards

United Nations Gen. Carlos P. Romulo Award
    Asiaweek Magazine's '25 Trend Makers' (1998)
    Asiaweek Magazine's '20 For The Future' (1995)
People Magazine's '50 Most Beautiful People in the World 1991

Kamiseta wanted her to be 'the' face in their ads...she turned it down.

Wendy's tried to get her back as their endorser...she rejected it.

A posh, A-class subdivision wanted to take just one picture of her
(for the print and billboard ads) for a very cool 4 million pesos and a lot in the same subd....she politely dismissed it.

Digitel wanted her to extend their contract with them (and i heard the first one was almost for free)...yet again, thumbs down for the Gokongwei-owned telephone company.

There are a lot of companies who wants her to be their endorser... Regine time and again is playing it safe and cool.

Don't worry, though...word has it that she's negotiating for another commercial. This one may be very special...

Post mahaba ito, so magsawa kayo

I don't know why people continue to rave about Miss Saigon, which, if stripped bare of all the hoopla, is a substandard musical that is derogatory to Asians. Hay naku, trust these Westerners to exoticize a place they haven't even familiarized themselves with, and to populate Asia with droves of prostitutes.

While I respect the fact that Lea has won acclaim for her performance as Kim, I am somehow doubtful of the intentions of these award-giving bodies in acknowledging her performance. Baka naman "tokenism" lang yan, dahil truthfully, Asians will be hard-pressed to find another vehicle as huge as Miss Saigon (again, not that it's a NICE vehicle, to begin with). I would've liked it better if she had won for a better role, one that is not as loaded with racial overtones--at least, if that had happened, hindi magiging "clouded" ang mga accolades na natanggap nya.

Heto pa: I haven't watched nor heard any song from the musical with Elaine Paige that made her lose out to Lea, but if one were to gauge by musical and emotive performativity alone, parang nakakayamot yata na hindi win ang Lola Elaine, especially considering the fact that kahit suited for the stage na si Ms. Paige, hindi pa nawawala ang emotional timbers ng voice nya, something that--sad to say--was sacrificed when Lea attuned her vocal chops to the stage.

And regarding the Regine-Lea brouhaha, one would be hard-pressed to include the issue of thespic range in this discussion, dahil both of them haven't exhibited any considerable acting prowess rin naman eh. Lea, in the Filipino films she has done since returning from the Miss Saigon stint, has been a consistently wooden actress. In "Sana Maulit Muli," she was eclipsed by Aga Muhlach, one of the most seamless and effortless actors in Philippine cinema. Siguro dahil sanay sha sa expansiveness ng theater. Regine, on the other hand, is stuck with lightweight roles. The only other time I saw her deviate from the sugary roles she has so far churned out was that one-episode stint sa "Maalaala...," where she failed to be anything else but cloying. If she really DOES intend to have a solid film career, then dapat gayahin nya ang Lola Sharon, who mixes both flighty and dramatic fare in her choice of roles.

Sa boses naman, for me, it's a matter of limitations. Lea makes the most out of her vocal abilities: disiplinado kasi sha, kaya magaling shang magmodulate. Regine, on the other hand, depends too much on her high (and how!) notes, kaya minsan her voice can be quite ingratiating to the ear. And this is a shame, since--despite the claim of some critics that she does nothing but scream--Regine is at her best PRECISELY when she doesn't scream as much. Over the years, her voice has attained a texture and an emotivity that serves her better than all her high notes. She should use her non-shrill voice more often, dahil yun yung "nakakaantig ng puso."

Now come the limitations, or, well, the individual strengths: Lea is the more thoughtful singer, but Regine has the better voice. Nurture versus Nature yan.

But, if I were to choose, I'd pick Ms. Regine Velasquez. Baket? Kasi her appeal is more mass-based, and to be truthful, mas fierce--fiercely loyal and fiercely alienated--audience ang masses, and the fact that Regine has sustained their support over the years is proof of her appeal. At entertainers sila pareho, and entertainment is primarily about appealing to the audience. And in terms of audience, majority wins po.

    Yun lang. Whew.
