23-ft. Crocodile kills 10 year old girl in Agusan

MANILA, Philippines - A 10-year-old girl was decapitated by a crocodile in a Philippine lake after the creature knocked over her canoe, police said Wednesday.

The girl and a classmate were on their way Saturday to their floating school on Agusan del Sur province's Mihaba Lake when the 23-foot- (7-meter-) long crocodile bumped the boat, causing it to capsize, said Bunawan town police officer Melchor Danuco.

Rescuers found the girl's headless body floating on the lake on Tuesday, he said.

The classmate was rescued by a man escorting the pair in another boat, said Roel Hipulan, head of the private group that runs the school in remote Bunawan town.

"It's a monster crocodile," Hipulan said, adding that he had seen the creature. He said salt water crocodiles, some bigger than a bus, are known to inhabit the lake, though attacks are rare.

But the lake's waters have been swollen for the past several months, causing fish to scatter to others parts. With little to feed on, the crocodiles have become aggressive, he said.

The crocodile attack has prompted the temporary closure of the school and the evacuation of about 100 residents of houses on stilts on the lake, Hipulan added.

The croc's behavior is very suspect. Because if the croc got the head of a 10-year old girl, the entire girl would be in its stomach, not just the head. Therefore, the classmate and the man escorting should be arrested for her death and kept in separate prisons. And photos of the 23-foot croc should be shown to the Pinoy population. Otherwise, a conviction for murder would be in order.

And how do you measure a 23-foot croc? Why wasn't it a 25-footer?

How do they know how long it is if they haven't captured it?

I feel bad for the family of the girl but yeah a croc that big would probably eat the whole girl. Why would a croc just eat the head? Something smells fishy here.

Agusan Marsh is a breeding ground for crocodiles, but I think 23 ft. is too large...maybe it's a bit exaggerated?

Not really. Saltwater crocs or salties grow up to 8.5 meters (28 ft). Compared to the freshwater or mugger crocs, their muzzles are twice the size. I remember reading something like another croc was killed in 1823 at Jala Jala on Luzon reported at 8.2 m (27 ft).

Reading the same news in LA Times (in here), it was reported that the incident happened in Mihaba Lake. Marsh is pretty much along shoreline. A perfect place for a croc to hide. Gators in Florida do the same thing even in water that's less than 2-feet deep.

Regardless kung ano ang reported na size ng media....the fact still remains that it pales in comparison to those BuwayangBaboy in Malakanyang, sa Kongreso, at Senado.

18 feet for a Croc I think is pretty large already. 23 feet is extremely huge.
