    Ten Prime Carrie Underwood Hits
    CMT.com

"Jesus, Take the Wheel," "Before He Cheats," "Undo It" Among Most Popular Songs

    August 9, 2010; Written by CMT.com Staff

Carrie Underwood keeps all of us on our toes at CMT.com. From the moment she won American Idol in 2005, her singing career has hit the fast track with prestigious awards, multi-platinum albums, TV specials, magazine covers and a Grand Ole Opry invitation. It's not just a dream -- this glamorous newlywed is officially everywhere. CMT.com staff members Stephanie Pendergrass, Chris Parton, Calvin Gilbert, Craig Shelburne and Whitney Self hopped off the carnival ride just long enough to gather 10 prime songs from the all-American girl. Play on.

"Cowboy Casanova" -- "Whoa, here she comes ..." Whenever I hear "Cowboy Casanova" I always think it's the female answer to Hall & Oates' 1982 hit, "Maneater." On a mission to protect the fairer sex, she issues a warning you can't help but sing along to, all the while finding the perfect balance of country and rock. Following the release of heartfelt singles "I Told You So" and "Just a Dream," it's refreshing to see this superstar shifting to her edgy side. -- SP

"Before He Cheats" -- Simply put, "Before He Cheats" showed fans that Underwood could be much more than America's sweetheart. She's got a feisty side a mile wide, too. And one that's so irresistible that girls and guys both love its attitude. Getting men to enjoy a song about an angry flame shredding a truck is an achievement on its own, but this song's crossover popularity catapulted her to phenomenon status. And the world may never know how many vehicles were (deservedly) destroyed as a result. -- CP

"Don't Forget to Remember Me" -- Leaving home to live on your own is a landmark moment in anyone's life, even when you've got strong support from a loving family. In fact, in many ways, it's probably a much more emotional experience when it finally sinks in that you'll no longer be able to see your loved ones on a daily basis. "Don't Forget to Remember Me" manages to convey bittersweet emotions without becoming saccharine. -- CG

"I Told You So" -- Randy Travis and I agree that his traditional country ballad suits her voice beautifully. Even though it was a No. 1 hit for Travis in 1988, the song had become overshadowed by his other classics, but now there's no way either of them can play a show without singing it. I'd like to hear this at the Opry, no matter which entertainer is on stage. Preferably together, though. -- CS

"Jesus, Take the Wheel" -- Regardless of your religious beliefs, we all experience times we feel like our lives are spinning out of control. That feeling can last for a split second or indefinitely. Songwriters Brett James, Gordie Sampson and Hillary Lindsey fashioned the lyrics around a car careening on a treacherous road, creating a universal metaphor. Sure, another singer might have recorded the song and maybe scored a hit, but Underwood's performance is absolutely perfect. -- CG

"Last Name" -- Everyone knows this song as the one where she gets married on accident (Oops!), but her soaring voice should be the focal point. Combined with a playful and imaginative plot, her vocals keep you hanging on every word as she connects the dots on a night of alcohol-fueled debauchery. When the hook finally sinks in toward the end, the note she hits seems like it could break glass. But then, I might sound the same way if I learned that what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. -- CP

"So Small" -- Life is filled with difficulties everyone must experience and eventually move past. This is how life lessons are created and, as she sings, become a "grain of sand" in time. Tribulations may be a part of life. But luckily, so is love. There's not a person out there, young or old, who can't relate to these lyrics. -- WS

"Temporary Home" -- At first I considered this song too sappy, but when I heard her perform it live, the enthusiastic audience reaction made me reconsider. Too often, sentimental ballads like this can clobber you over the head with vocal theatrics and preachy lyrics, but Underwood wisely lets these stories unfold without telling you what to believe. Still, I believe she nails this one. -- CS

"Undo It" -- Almost like a follow-up to "Before He Cheats" or "Cowboy Casanova," she's wicked mad and seeking vengeance. In this spicy song, Underwood breaks all the rules as she refuses to let another man make her cry or steal her happy. Amen, sister. -- WS

"Wasted" -- The ambitious melody is the first thing that grabbed me. If you ever try to sing along, you'll quickly realize that it takes an incredible singer to pull it off. ("Wake up one day and fiiiiind...") As a long-term thinker, the undaunted lyrics resonate with me, too. And by the way, she wasted no time becoming a country star, did she? -- CS

Carrie Underwood Puts Her Panic Attacks to Rest

Carrie Underwood Puts Her Panic Attacks to Rest
    By Stephen M. Silverman

    Friday August 20, 2010 10:25 AM EDT

With her constant stream of top awards and her handsome new husband Mike Fisher, Carrie Underwood may appear to be on top of the world, but the country superstar reveals this wasn't always the case.

In high school, says the Checotah, Okla., native, she suffered panic attacks, Underwood tells WebMD the Magazine. Particularly problematic was Christmas shopping, which, she says, "seemed to be my worst nightmare."

The issue appeared to be the close proximity to others. "I'm a big personal space person. You know, if you go to the restroom, you use the stall that's not near anybody. Or if you're in the gym, you go to the treadmill where there's space in between you. And it seemed like in crowded situations like that, people would just completely violate your personal space," she says.

"So, whenever I'd be in stores and there would be people touching me and kids running around, I couldn't take it and I'd have to leave."

Though she has put the problem behind her, Underwood also says that having to adjust to dealing with crowds once she hit it big on American Idol in 2005 required some effort.

Fans, she says, "feel like they know you and they love you and that's wonderful – they're excited to meet you," she says. "It just took me a minute to be able to figure that out and to be able to allow people into my space."

    Keeping Fit
Underwood, 27, also now maintains a healthy mind and body – not an always easy task, given her constant touring schedule and its pitfalls of sleep deprivation, fast food (which she avoids) and even germy hotels – which she has her dog Ace sniff out.

According to WebMD, Underwood has five steps to staying in shape. They are:

    1. Work out. "Cardio makes me feel good, it makes me happy. It really makes a noticeable difference."

    2. Eat healthy. "I'm not a huge pill taker, because I feel like our bodies are designed to take what we need out of food. So I don't want to make my body deficient and make it depend on what I take. I'd rather eat and drink things that are good for me."

    3. Keep washing. "I'd rather take preventive measures than get sick and try to battle things off. So I do wash my hands quite a bit."

    4. Get some rest. "I enjoy naps but only on days off, because I can take, like, a three-hour one. I'll take a nap if it's just a total rainy day off and there's nothing you can do anyway."

    5. Give back. "People think, 'I don't have time to volunteer,' but there are little things you can do to make the world better and raise awareness, whatever your passion is. Like if you go to facebook.com/Pedigree, you can become a fan, and they'll donate a bowl of food to a shelter dog. That's a free meal, and it took 30 seconds of your life."

CARRIE Underwood is already at war with her hockey hunk husband!

CARRIE Underwood is already at war with her hockey hunk husband!

Sources say the American Idol alum — who wed Mike Fisher on July 10 — has come to blows with her spouse after she reneged on a promise to move to his native Canada.

“Carrie and Mike are experiencing a post-wedding comedown,” a source told American tabloid the National Enquirer.

“Reality is starting to set in, and it isn’t pretty. Mike is demanding that Carrie make good on her promise to move to Ottawa, Canada, where he’s based with his hockey team. But now Carrie is backtracking and refusing to leave her adopted hometown of Nashville.

“Mike was going over renovation details for the 5,000-square-foot house he’s building in West Carleton, Ottawa.

“He was talking about building a nursery when Carrie flew off the handle. She told Mike it was pointless to build space for a baby because she has no intention of living there.

“Carrie claimed she hadn’t thought the living plan through when she committed earlier. She told Mike that she’s most comfortable recording and writing in Nashville, and that her touring commitments make Nashville a more logical home base.

“Mike feels duped and raged that Carrie misled him. When Carrie said her mind was made up, Mike fired back, ‘I’ll be living in Canada, whether you’re there or not!’

“The conversation turned into a screaming match, and ended with Carrie in tears after locking herself in the bathroom.”

Carrie's being shut down! Huhu! Walang EOTY award!

Carrie Underwood Nabs 2 CMA Nominations
    September 1st, 2010 | Author: windmills

Nominations in the final 5 categories of 44th Annual CMA Awards were announced today and Carrie Underwood nabbed nominations in the categories of Album Of The Year for her album Play On and Female Vocalist Of The Year.

This is Carrie’s 5th consecutive nomination in the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year category (she has won 3 times) and her 2nd nomination for CMA Album of the Year (Carnival Ride was nominated in 2008).

Despite a very successful and well-reviewed headlining tour and her ambassadorship for country music, Carrie did not snag her 1st nomination in the CMA Entertainer Of The Year category. The media will likely talk about that being a significant snub since several of the nominated acts are not yet proven as concert headliners.

Also notable is the fact that last year’s CMA Entertainer Of The Year Taylor Swift did not get nominated in that category again and snagged a lone nomination in the Female Vocalist Of The Year category.

Summary of the nominations after the jump:

Miranda Lambert leads the pack with 9 nominations including one for Entertainer Of The Year. This year’s CMA Awards looks to be the Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum show with appearances by Miranda Lambert’s fiancé Blake Shelton and breakthrough act Zac Brown Band. This year’s CMA Awards will air on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 8 PM Eastern/7 PM Central on ABC, with cohosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood at the helm.

Carrie Underwood: Why do the CMAs keep snubbing her for Entertainer of the Year?
    by Whitney Pastorek
    ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY MAGAZINE
    SEP 2 2010 04:15 PM ET

The 2010 CMA Awards nominations came out yesterday, and despite nine well-deserved nominations for Miranda Lambert, including Entertainer of the Year, most of the chatter was about the blondes missing from that category. Although they both had typically strong years, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood will be sitting out the race for the top prize at country’s big fall awards show — and it’s not super clear why.
We’ll set aside the Swift issue for the time being — she took EOTY at last year’s CMAs, and her absence this year may be a combination of her being between album cycles and some sort of conscious effort by the industry voters to shine a light elsewhere within the genre to avoid these things becoming Taylor Time, All The Time. (I’m not saying that’s a worthy excuse to give her slot to a potentially less-deserving act, but it’s the best I can come up with right now.)
The bigger issue here is the continued absence of Underwood from the CMA EOTY category, given the ginormous success she’s enjoyed in the four years since Jesus took her wheel — and especially given the fact that the CMAs have no problem with Underwood co-hosting their awards show. Three times. With a dress budget running into the billions. And yet she’s never once been nominated for Entertainer. What the what? After the jump, we’ll break down the situation.
First, here is the official description the CMA sends its members when they are voting for Entertainer of the Year, as confirmed by a rep for the CMA. (They declined to comment on this specific situation.) Ahem: “This award is for the act displaying the greatest competence in all aspects of the entertainment field. Voter should give consideration not only to recorded performance, but also to the in-person performance, staging, public acceptance, attitude, leadership, and overall contribution to the country music image.”
The case in Carrie’s favor is easy: Certainly, if you watched last night’s CMA special (“Country’s Night to Rock!”), you’d think Underwood would be a no-brainer for EOTY contention. Unless I am mistaken, she was the only act to perform three songs on the telecast — “Cowboy Casanova,” “Undo It,” and “Last Name” — and even in jean shorts and a tank top, Carrie and her shiny, shiny legs turned it, as the kids say, out. She’s your two-time reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year — an award that has been at least partially fan-voted both years she’s won, although the nominations are not fan-voted – and despite her absence from EOTY at the CMAs, that trade association has awarded her Female Vocalist of the Year on three separate occasions.
In the 2009-2010 eligibility window, she released the platinum-selling Play On, scored three No. 1 singles, and had the 15th highest-grossing tour for the first half of the year, according to Pollstar. (EOTY nom Brad Paisley was in 16th place; Carrie is, however, averaging 7,000 tickets per night to his 12,000. The next highest-grossing EOTY nominee is the Zac Brown Band, down at No. 76, playing for an average of 4,800 fans per show.) Carrie also sang the National Anthem at the 2010 Super Bowl (the most-watched event in TV history), received the “Triple Crown” at the ACMs (New Artist, Female Vocalist, Entertainer; I believe only the second female in history to have done so), and won Video of the Year at the CMT Awards (for “Cowboy Casanova”). Etc., etc., blah blah. The numbers are there.
And it’s certainly not an image problem: the newly-married Underwood has always been fresh as a daisy, scandal free, fully clothed, polite to a fault, doesn’t so much as Twitter to get herself in trouble. Loves God, loves the fans, loves country radio. I’d say her stewardship of the genre — even as she’s crossed into pop markets with songs like “Before He Cheats” — has been impeccable. I have never heard or seen her represent herself or country music poorly on television, in concert, or at the many dress rehearsals for assorted awards programs and specials I have attended over the years, during which she belts out multiple takes of songs that would kill mere mortals without ever missing a note. Ever.
So what’s the case against her?
Maybe it’s the pop crossover that raised eyebrows. Are Underwood’s songs insufficiently “country”? Perhaps. But then let’s go ahead and banish Taylor Swift forevermore, along with Lady Antebellum (2010 EOTY nom), Sugarland (OMG reggae), Keith Urban (2010 EOTY nom), Rascal Flatts, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, the new Reba single, and 65 to 70 percent of Zac Brown’s material (plus also his hats). Obviously, having a pop bent in today’s market cannot justifiably be held against anybody, unless you plan to hold it against everybody. In which case, Jamey Johnson better start clearing space on his trophy shelf, and someone should go wake up Lee Ann Womack.
The other possible excuse is that pesky American Idol show from which she sprang forth. Oh, there is nothing old-school Nashville hates more than someone who didn’t “pay their dues” before making it big. But where this argument starts to leak is when you consider the industry’s perspective on Idol runners-up over the years. Shall I list the names that have at least in part been welcomed into the country music fold? Danny Gokey, Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler, Josh Gracin, Phil Stacey, Kristy Lee Cook, Aaron Kelly, Kelly Clarkson, I think Chris Daughtry showed up on an awards show once, do you see where I am going with this? It appears Nashville has no problem embracing these reality-show acts from the perspective of commerce, as there is surely nothing more appealing to an embattled label exec than a new artist with a built-in fan(atic) base who can sell 15-20K records in their first week and become a reliable opening draw for a more established headliner. But it would be awfully hypocritical to then hold those same reality roots against them when it comes to legitimate questions of artistry, should artistry in fact emerge.
Also, I hate to remind everyone, but Miranda Lambert finished third on Nashville Star.
Thus, the only thing I can think of here that is not easily debunked with facts and figures and simple logic is the following: The last time the Country Music Association nominated more than one solo female for Entertainer of the Year was 1979, when Crystal Gayle and Barbara Mandrell lost to Willie Nelson. And they gave this year’s slot to Miranda. Oh well. Can’t fight gender, ladies.
Obviously, this is just a theoretical exercise; I defer to the wisdom of the CMA voters, who are in the industry and therefore know way more than I do about what’s going on. And just to reiterate, I am focusing on Carrie right now — rather than Taylor or Reba or Sugarland or Chesney or Tim McGraw or George Strait, any of whom it could be argued also deserved an EOTY nod this year — because she has never receieved a nomination in this category, and I can’t think of another equally-qualified artist facing the same conundrum. Can you?

Taylor Swift: "Carrie is my role model"

"Carrie is my role model," said Taylor, who is up for Best New Artist at the Feb. 10 Grammys, an award Carrie won last year. "That girl has done so much to prove what females in country music can do. Just from knowing her, she'll never say a bad thing about anybody ever, even if somebody has said something bad about her. She'll never say something catty, and it's really cool. It makes me want to be that way too."

Thanks Taylor for the nice comment. I really appreciate it. Its really too bad that both of you didn't make it in the CMA ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR nominees for some reason I can't really understand up to now.

Haist. Guess; that's life. Better to move on now.

Can you?
Very accurate observations in a very justified article. Clearly, the CMA has lost its credibility in giving awards to artists who are most deserving.

IMO, I think Carrie should've released Someday When I Stop Loving You as her next single. There's a big chancefor it to get a shot at winning Single or Song of the Year at the ACMs next year.

Carrie Underwood's Mom (and Hubby) Cameo in New Music Video

Carrie Underwood's latest music video may look a little bit like a family home video. That's because it stars her mother Carole and new husband Mike Fisher.

The country singer, 27, enlisted her loved ones for the "Mama's Song" video, which premieres on Friday. The tune, off 2009's Play On, is about leaving the nest and finding the man of her dreams.

"[Mike's] not 'in' it but you can tell it's him," Underwood tells PEOPLE about the hockey player's cameo. "He hung out with my mom [on set] and he's great with her."

The lyrics for the song reference her upbringing – and her newlywed status.

"Mama you taught me to do the right things / So now you have to let your baby fly," she sings. "And I know you watch me grow up and always want what's best for me / And I think I found the answer to your prayers / And he is good, so good / He treats your little girl like a real man should."

What was the best part of making the video, which filmed in August? "Just seeing [Mike] in my world was sweet," she says.

The video premieres Friday on VEVO, and will also be available on PEOPLE.com.
