Kevin Skinner Wins 'America's Got Talent' - Yipee

In other news, he can't sing.
Or maybe he can on second thought, but put right beside Barbara Padilla or even lowly Drew Stevyns, the America's Got Talent 2009 winner is simply a notch below. Like other people, there was, I concede, something special about him the first time he performed on the America's Got Talent stage. But as the competition went on, it was clear that his talent, heart, spirit, or whatever metaphysical entity people have been assigning it, is simply not worth a million dollars.

But then again, Susan Boyle performed on the same night, so that was a clear, glaring reminder that the best doesn't always win on the Got Talent franchise (come to think of it, this is also the year that anti-gay forces succeeded in not letting Adam Lambert win American Idol, but that's an old issue).
Here is the America's Got Talent top 5:
Winner: Kevin Skinner, country singer
2. Barbara Padilla, opera singer
3. Recycled Percussion, junkyard percussionists
4. The Texas Tenors, country-classical singers
5. The Voices of Glory, singers
Moving on, however, a win's a win, and there probably is some merit to Kevin Skinner winning (even though I can't see it no matter how much I look). There is not much premium on whether the "right" person wins in these kinds of competition, because there is no foolproof definition of the label. If Kevin Skinner did get the most votes, he does deserve the title on America's Got Talent.
Whether or not he can sustain a Vegas show, that's another matter entirely. As some sore American Idol loser once said, "see you at the charts," or rather, "see you in Vegas.
