(yep, I was once a ''solar boy'') )

The Glory years of Paras, Magsanoc and Parks in the early 90's made me focus on basketball. I was in elementary then and we would play in a home-made backboard and goal with a junior-sized ball. Naalala ko pa, multi-colored yung bola namin. Every summer, me, my bro and yung 2 cousins namin always play sa backyard ng ancestral home namin. Sa height ng Ginebra-Shell rivalry, we decided to paint the backboard with "Shell" and "Ginebra" (yes, kahoy ang board nun, kasi di pa uso fiber glass masyado ). Kami nung isang cousin ko yung Shell team while my bro and the other cousin are the Gin boys kasi bad boys sila. LOL!

Pag rainy days, gagawa kami ng ring out of yung cardboard cylinder sa mga packaging tapes the ididikit sa likod ng pinto ng kwarto the we’ll play using a tennis ball. There are times nasisigawan na kami ni erpat kasi ang ingay namin sa loob ng room pero pagtalikod derecho pa rin. Height noon ng Dream Team 2 domination. Vividly remembers Reggie Miller wearing goggles due to an eye injury (maisingit lang).

Basket kami from 8AM to 11:30AM, uuwi lang para kumain, balik ulit ng 1PM (imagine, peak ng init yun) Final year ko sa elementary I decided to try out sa varsity team, nakuha naman awa ng Diyos, naging kaibigan ko mga Milo BEST graduates. After weeks of practice, di natuloy yung competition. wapak! That summer, first time ko naman sumali sa summer league. Our team was made up of scrubs and right on the first day we set a whole lotta record for futility. Most 3 second violations. Lowest point output. The game ended at 44-9. Up to now naalala ko pa yon. That tournament, particularly the opening day loss motivated me though. Told myself I will never be beaten that bad again, no matter where I play.

HS days, in summer of 1995, I grew 3 inches taller from 5'4" to 5'7". I had trouble adjusting kasi I play the 2 spot. So when the tryouts invitation came for the HS varsity in my sophomore year, I can't really identify the position I wanna play. So in short, that attempt to make the team failed. To comfort ourselves nung mga kaibigan kong kasamang na-cut, nanood kami ng Eskapo na movie right straight out of the gym. Being cut though motivated me more.

3rd year HS, I transferred to an all-male school that is well-known for its basketball program, my friends told me lalong di ako makakapasok dito. The coach was like Pat Riley, old-school, disciplined and very much conditioning-oriented. I luckily made it though. Kasama ko pinsan ni Cris Bolado sa team (suot nya lagi yung shorts ni Bolado sa practice na parang pajama nya) and a would-be Team B PG ng FEU. Grabe praktis namin nun, RUN, RUN and RUN. I remember, ganda pa ng laro ko nun, Best Player of the Game kumbaga. Kinakalaban ko na nun were guys that are 5 to 10 years older than me. Dahil sa larong kalye, napag-aralan ko pumoste and play with my back against the basket. I started dunking on stronger, bigger guys sa halfcourt games.

Before college, I hurt my leg and knee though, dun ko naisip di pwedeng puro athleticism lang. That’s when I watched how Hakeem and David Robinson outwit their defenders. I learned the art of faking, footwork, up and under moves and shooting turnaround jumpers. That landed me the captain ball role for the whole 4-year college career. I learned the jumphooks and babyhooks and used those against bigger centers. Good thing about my game was that I can light it up from the outside too. We once won a third place trophy with my buzzer-beating three. That set off my game to greater heights, our teams would dominate tournaments. Won championships after championships. I don't really like scoring in bunches though, I was always a team player but I just love lighting it up in crunch time. I can defer to another star but I don't shy away during crucial stretches of the game. And yes, I’ve lost some games in crunch time too; missed a FT or didn’t make a final shot but I overall I still saved more games than not in the endgame.

When I worked, that's when I met Coach (and eventually ninong) Allan Gregorio and Bo Perasol. We will join tournaments in Makati and Sucat and we literally ran PBA-type plays. We would run our killer diamond D and beat opponents by almost half a century mark. We won a championship in 2005 and that seemed the peak of my career. That's until I realized my game can be lifted a bit higher pa, I learned playing the pivot really well. I literally swatted every shot that comes my way. I learned to outjump the best of them. It was all good until I blew my right knee in early 2010. Slight ACL tear, and it sidelined me for over a year. Lost game shape and conditioning. I was actually scheduled to join the 2010 PEX rookie camp but got injured. Last year, I was enlisted once more but the knee just won't hold up. Still working to gameshape form right now but I promised Comish Kiko that I will join the draft this year no matter what. 

Did I just blew my draft chances by telling my story?

madumi ba maglaro si rodman? i dont think so... passionate, yes... not dirty.. maraming naaasar sa kanya kasi madepensa talaga... lakas pa mang-asar... ika nga ni Phil Jackson, kung may player sya na gustong icoach at pinakamadaling turuan, hindi si MJ or Kobe, kundi si Rodman...
