BoxOfficeMojo predicts $214.7M for TDKR
A popular debate over the past two months has been whether or not The Dark Knight Rises can top the record-setting $207.4 million Avengers debut. It's an uphill battle, for sure: The Avengers had a boost from 3D ticket pricing, and opened at a time when there wasn't really any competition. Additionally, The Dark Knight Rises has an insanely long runtime (164 minutes) which will prevent it from getting in as many showings per screen as The Avengers.
That being said, there are a handful of things working in favor of The Dark Knight Rises. First, the movie is guaranteed to have a much bigger midnight opening than The Avengers. Four years ago, before midnight movies had really taken off, The Dark Knight set a then-record with $18.5 million. The opportunity to be one of the first to see the conclusion has sparked ridiculous midnight demand among fanboys, and theaters are adding more and more showtimes to accommodate this demand. At 3,700 midnight locations, The Dark Knight Rises should earn at least $30 million, which gives it an early leg up on The Avengers ($18.7 million).
Also thanks to the proliferation of digital projection, theaters should be well-suited to handle the surge of opening weekend demand for The Dark Knight Rises. Yes, Ice Age: Continental Drift and to a lesser extent The Amazing Spider-Man will hold on to most of their screens, but other movies are going to get pushed aside to make room for Batman (at the Arclight theaters in Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, for example, the movie appears to be playing on at least six out of 14 screens this weekend). Tracking indicates that there's more pre-release interest in The Dark Knight Rises than in The Avengers, and if that gap is significant enough, then The Dark Knight Rises can overcome its ticket price disadvantage and claim the all-time opening weekend record.
Since the main selling point appears to be that it is the final installment, a good way to come up with a range for the opening weekend of The Dark Knight Rises is by looking back at other popular series finales. For its five-day opening, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King earned $124.1 million, which was a 22 percent improvement over The Two Towers. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith jumped 44 percent over its predecessor with a $158.4 million four-day start, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was up 35 percent to $169.2 million over opening weekend. Based on these figures, The Dark Knight Rises should be in line for somewhere between $193 million and $228 million.
Thanks to an attention-grabbing campaign, the exorbitant pent-up demand, and the insane popularity of its predecessor, it's likely that the movie winds up on the higher end of this range, and barely beats The Avengers's $207.4 million record.
Weekend Forecast (July 20-22)
1. The Dark Knight Rises - $214.7 million (new record)
2. Ice Age 4 - $26.6 million (-43%)
3. The Amazing Spider-Man - $16.7 million (-51%)
4. Ted - $13.7 million (-39%)

Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman
Distributor: Warner Brothers Philippines
After Christopher Nolan re-introduced us to Gotham City via Batman Begins in 2005, weve finally come to the final conclusion of the Batman trilogy, and to say it is epic is some sort of understatement. The Dark Knight Rises certainly lives up to the premise of the first two predecessors while managing to highlight new accomplishments of its own.
The story begins eight years after where the last story finished, and Gotham City, to say the least, has been enjoying the peace and calmness that Batman provided since the tragic accident. Back on his renovated and much improved Wayne Manor, our heros alter ego Bruce Wayne has been living a pretty stagnant life, now on a cane, resigning from his Batman duties, and very aloof to others except for his trusty assistant (after all, he was pretty much exiled after taking the blame for what happened to Harvey Dent). Its not until were introduced to Hannibal Lecter look-a-like character Bane that Batman felt the urge to step into his cape and save the day once again.
We were also treated to a plethora of new characters in this last part of Nolan's trilogy: Joseph Gordon Levitt as Batman loyalist John Blake, Marion Cotillard as co-executive and love interest Miranda Tate who serves as a perfect distraction to Bruce Wayne, and Anne Hathaways devilishly diva Selina Kyle and ferocious alter ego Catwoman. These characters added more interest and enjoyment in the film.
Christopher Nolan is probably one of the most critically lauded directors of the past decade and in the Dark Knight Rises, he leveled up another notch to come up with a good balance of satisfying both the eyes and the mind of the audience. Theres really something with his treatment of storytelling that gives his audience contentment and at the same time, leaving it open for different interpretations. I like how some of the situations can be juxtaposed with different current issues that a lot of countries are experiencing. I read that before he started the trilogy, he already had a planned ending, and I think that helped a lot with the direction he wants to tackle with this one. I know that one of Nolans weaknesses is the way he writes his female characters but both Miranda and Selina were probably some of his better outputs.
As for the technical achievements of the film, it definitely delivered. What I love about Nolans visuals is that theyre flashy but not over the top. Just take the bridge destruction scene in the first trailer; had it been any other director handling that scene, it would have been the primary focus. With Nolan, he doesnt focus on the single part but its overall effect in the context of the movie. The cinematography was very pleasing to the eyes and the musical score helps set the mood regardless if its an action scene or simply a conversation one. I also took notice on how Nolan set up some scenes to be free of any sound; those quiet moments linger on the impending scene thats about to happen.
It is noteworthy to mention that this one among the three movies featured Batman the least. However, that didnt affect the overall movie as were being treated to all these other interesting characters. It also helped that the movie had a very capable ensemble with Christian Bale at his best as Batman, and Joseph Gordon Levitt in a pivotal role. All the regulars (Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman) already cemented their roles while still balancing the emotional gravitas with the action packed ones. Tom Hardy wasnt given the best showcase, and comparisons with Heath Ledgers Joker is really difficult to avoid, but come on, that is iconic and no one can touch Ledgers Joker. Given the underdeveloped role, Hardy did the best he could with his Bane character. My favorite though is Anne Hathaway as Selina slash Catwoman who delivered expectations, giving a fun sassy vibe kicking asses and changing characters hysterically while at the same time being very effortless.
All in all, it wasnt the perfect movie. There were areas that can still be improved every now and then; however, more than being a flawless flick, it was more than satisfying as a conclusion to this Batman trilogy. Christopher Nolans approach is the true gem of these three films with The Dark Knight Rises closing the whole series effectively.
GRADE: 9.5/10
The Dark Knight Rises opens today (July 19) in theaters nationwide.

Discuss the movie at The Dark Knight Rises thread
Shocks! I love Dark Knight Rises! Actually, trailer pa lang, hahaha, hoepfully makanuod kami this weekend![]()
This movie is so damn good I literally welled up. If one ever read Batman Legacy or Bane of the Demon. That is the true Bane; every bit a match for the Dark Knight.
And I don't want to start a DC-Marvel fanboy war here. But, I just have to say this.
Definitely better than the Avengers.
legendary. the finale didn't let the trilogy down and it really boosted the dark knight saga. Anne Hathaway!priceless
i'm not impressed. certainly a few notches lower than "the dark knight."
[spoiler start]certainly bane is no joker, his performance is superb most of the time, but i could only understand only about half of what he's saying. and i really hate his last few minutes in the movie. not a fitting end for someone as bad *** as him.
while this is a batman movie, batman/bruce wayne was shown only about 1/3 of the movie. this is more like detective comics movie, not a batman movie.
while the almost 3 hour movie is not dragging, the end felt rushed. and incomplete. it's open-ended, almost as if nolan wanted DC to continue his work on batman in case the JLA movie will be made with ties to the previous batman movies.
catwoman was too... stereotypical, i guess.
i liked the mashup of knightfall and no man's land (2 batman stories in the comics) together though. worked brilliantly.
[spoiler end]
for the reasons above, i give this film a 7.5/10. not a bad film, but because the bar was set too high, it just falls short.
Mahaba ba yung pila sa theaters?
just got home from the movie theater. was actually better than i expected, probably a good thing not reading any reviews or possible synopsis prior to seeing the movie. the score is really superb and the ending is just fantastic. i say 5/5! definitely the movie of the year so far
btw, si leo na lang ang kulang sa cast...inception reunion na sana
...and i also had a good chuckle when thomas lennon appeared on screenthat was totally unexpected.
