Christopher Nolan Says Tom Hardy's Bane Has 'A Little Bit Of Darth Vader'

Batman has faced Scarecrow, The Joker and in Christopher Nolan's third "Dark Knight" installment, the caped crusader will take on possibly his toughest foe.
When Nolan decided that Bane - an almost unstoppable juggernaut known in the comic books for breaking Batman's back - would be the movie's villain, the director looked to actor Tom Hardy, who he previously worked with on "Inception."

"When we chose Bane as the antagonist and I thought about asking a great actor to cover his face up for the whole [movie] -- you could just see his eyes and just hear his voice -- I knew immediately that Tom would be up for that," the director told Access Hollywood at the press junket for "The Dark Knight Rises."
Nolan said there is a touch of one of cinema's best villains (from a galaxy far, far away) in Hardy's Bane.

"[He's] something you've never seen before. It's a little bit of Darth Vader, a little bit of this, little bit of that... It's very unique and that's what you get with great actors like Tom Hardy, he's not just going to go through the motions, he's going to try and craft a character that really makes sense for him. He has really gone in through the roots of the character and approached the evil," the director explained.
Hardy's unique take on the fanboy bad guy favorite also required a massive physical transformation for the 34-year-old British actor.

"He had to make himself huge for the role. He learned how to do all of this fighting with Christian Bale, both of them wearing these crazy outfits where they could barely breathe. In Tom's case, with this mask over his face, very tough to breathe, very hot, working in some very challenging environments," Nolan told Access. "There was a lot of preparation that went into it, and it really shows on screen."

Finally another superhero movie that adults would enjoy. Enough of bratty teens in the lead role. Young'uns would prefer spiderman because they could relate to the lead character. I prefer the bat cause I could relate to him. Y'know, billionaire playboy by day, vigilante crime fighter by night. Much like my lifestyle.(..i wish..)

    Ilang tulog na lang!!!

This could be the movie that would make people forget about Amazing Spider-Man. That is if The Dark Knight Rises really turns out to be a great flick.

^^^ IGN is the last place where I would take a movie review seriously. Thankfully the movies does have a great 86 at Metacritic, I expect it to go down to at least an 80 (The Dark Knight settled at 82) but that would still be a very good score.

Sa U.S. and other overseas markets, oo. Yan talaga sasagasa ng husto kay Spiderman sa box-office. Pero sa Philippines parang hindi, mahina naman ang Dark Knight nung 2008. Mas mataas pa ang kinita ni Spidey in its 1st 3 days alone. Saka nakita ko scheds ng SM, mas madami talagang screens nila ang nagpalabas ng Spidey sa first week kesa TDKR.

But I love both Spidey and DK. Manonood ako sa first day!

    You agree with Hollywood Reporter?

Makes everything in the rival Marvel universe look thoroughly silly and childish. Entirely enveloping and at times unnerving in a relevant way one would never have imagined, as a cohesive whole this ranks as the best of Nolan's trio, even if it lacks -- how could it not? -- an element as unique as Heath Ledger's immortal turn in The Dark Knight. It's a blockbuster by any standard.

TDKR: Negative Reviews Angrily Slammed By Fans

Much like with The Avengers a while back, fans who have seen the few negative reviews for Chris Nolan's final Bat-flick have retaliated...very harshly. Read on after the jump for some snippets of what was said.

A couple of spoiler-free yet very opinionated reviews of The Dark Knight Rises have hit, and not every one of them is positive of course. Certain fans however, furiously responded to these few negative reviews that offered a side of things they obviously didn't want to hear..and they haven't even seen the movie for themselves yet!

Christy Lemire, of the Associated Press, gave the movie two stars, mildly noting that it felt like a letdown from an exceptional, visionary filmmaker like Christopher Nolan. That brought 495 comments at last count, of which I hope you die was one of the most printable.

Marshall Fine, who reviews for the Star and his own website, Hollywood & Fine, also didnt like the film. No surprise there (he wasnt a fan of The Dark Knight either) but his review which compared the movie to a bad Transformers sequel -- brought 852 comments, and so many slams to his own site it briefly shut it down. (Rotten Tomatoes then removed the link.)

Obviously some people aren't so tolerant of other's opinions these days. Personally, I could care less what someone thinks of a film that I like or am interested in seeing. I'm going to see it regardless, but that doesn't mean I would shoot threats and insults just because a film I like gets a bad review. We'll just see how the things pan out once TDKR is released. Just a few more days left...

    natawa naman ako dito.

I read about this also, I think it's really sad and just another exhibit of Fanboy culture taking over movies. I think it's almost gotten to the point where it's become as bad as the videogame industry which is filled with Fanboys.

Yes perhaps some reviews are poorly written but to have these fanboys post death threats and attacks to the point rottentomatoes had to disable commenting for The Dark Knight Rises just shows how bad things have gotten. 400 Comments bashing the critic because he didn't like it even if the people who commented on the review have not seen the movie yet? It's almost as bad the Local Movies section here.

The Dark Knight Rises: Early Reviews Roundup!

"Few blockbusters have borne so heavy a burden of audience expectation as [director] Christopher Nolan's final Batman caper, and the filmmaker steps up to the occasion with a cataclysmic vision of Gotham City under siege in The Dark Knight Rises," writes Variety's Justin Chang. "If it never quite matches the brilliance of 2008's The Dark Knight, this hugely ambitious action-drama nonetheless retains the moral urgency and serious-minded pulp instincts that have made the Warners franchise a beacon of integrity in an increasingly comic book-driven Hollywood universe."

"Big-time Hollywood filmmaking at its most massively accomplished, this last installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy makes everything in the rival Marvel universe look thoroughly silly and childish," notes The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy. "Entirely enveloping and at times unnerving in a relevant way one would never have imagined, as a cohesive whole this ranks as the best of Nolan's trio, even if it lacks -- how could it not? -- an element as unique as Heath Ledger's immortal turn in The Dark Knight. It's a blockbuster by any standard."

The Dark Knight Rises doesn't lack for ambition or vision," states Tim Grierson over at Screen Daily. "Nonetheless, this final installment in director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is the first of the series not to smoothly execute its grand aspirations. The film suffers a bit from a glut of new characters, but is helped along by Nolan's continued insistence on emotional resonance over mindless spectacle."

"With spectacle in abundance and sexiness in (supporting) parts, this is superhero filmmaking on an unprecedented scale," offers Empire's Nev Pierce. "Rises may lack the surprise of Begins or the anarchy of Knight, but it makes up for that in pure emotion. A fitting epitaph for the hero Gotham deserves."

"I suspect that the reaction to the film will be hotly divided, but I'm firmly on the side that this is a triumph, a victor for all involved," writes Drew McWeeny of HitFlix. "Whoever Warner Bros hires to reboot the Batman films a few years from now, I wish you luck. The bar is as high as it could possibly be."

A certain Amazing Spider-Man movie fanatic I know is deliberately forcing a "rivalry" between ASM and TDKR.

He's the same fanatic who said that Amazing Spider-Man revolutionized the superhero genre similar to what Final Fantasy XIII did for RPGs.

While he ranted about how much he loved ASM, and how positive were the reviews he found (note: hand-picked), he just could not resist Batman the character and telling people to read the "most accurate" review of TDKR below

I'm not a really a fan of Nolan's Batman series. I find it boring. Even its trailer makes me sleep already. I can afford to wait for the 'clear' DVD to come out. In fact, I got to watch the first two (2) parts on DVD one (1) year after its release in the cinemas. To those who would be able to watch it starting tomorrow, please post if its cinematography is Parkinsons-afflicted like the one in Hunger Games, Ghost Rider II, Bourne Supremacy, etc. so I won't watch it anymore on DVD.
