It looks like what you need is AutoDial for the Dial-Up connection. This feature automatically prompts your modem to just dial-up for connection once Network is disconnected.

Start - Control Panel - Network Connections ---

Then on the Advanced Tab click on Dial Up Preferences, enable Auto-Dial but check the two boxes below the big box.

This is if you want it really automatic.
But we suggest just doing it manually para less 'hassle'.
Why not place a Dial-Up shortcut icon on the TaskBar or anywhere instantly accessible -- 2 clicks and that's it.

I hope you find this helpful.

that was a nice opinion sir.. yet it didn't solved my problem..

the concept was to two internet connection one as primary and the other one as backup... given that both connection are physically connected to the ISP but only one is being used in the home network(LAN). Once the primary Internet Source went down.. the secondary Internet source will handle the Internet Services... is there such solution for home computing? or must have some servers to work on such... any idea.. please greatly appreciated

PcPro has done tests on Atom 330 (The Dual core Atom) vs. Atom N270 (single core) and even vs. Via.

    here are the results.

-Overall results: Atom 330 performs only 16% faster than Atom N270.

-Office 2003 tests: Atom 330 stayed behind Atom N270 and VIA C7 respectively.

-2D graphics tests: Atom 330 performed 41% better than Atom N270 and 70% better than VIA C7

-Encoding tests: Atom 330 scored 18% better than N720 and 39% much better than the VIA.

-Multitasking tests: Atom 330 performed 47% faster than Atom N270 and Atom N270 performed 44% better than VIA C7.

So it looks like 330 is really good for Multitasking (and for hyperthreading apps like Photoshop) -- but not exemplary in handling single core apps (MS Office).

But here's something you should really consider:
Atom 330 will deliver half battery life than the current Netbooks utilizing Atom N270.**

SO you have to think about it first, do you really need Dual Core?
And come on, Dual Core Atom!?
Why not go all out and get Core 2 Duo if you really want Hyperthreading?

Wow. Terrific answer, nice find, thanks.

I think I'll stick to the Atom N270 for the moment.

I believe the quality of DSL or broadband connection varies from one area to another.

    Here's my question:

I'm planning to upgrade my laptop to maximize its performance as to multimedia and processing. However, I don't know what specific aspects on this are 'upgradeables'. Please shed me some light.

    Current Laptop Details:

    Manufacturer : ASUSTek Computer Inc.
    Model : X80L series
    Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 @ 1.50 GHz
    Memory (RAM) : 2gb
    System Type : 32-bit OS
Operating System : Vista Home Basic SP 1
    HD : 160gb
Video : Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family

Can any of these specs be upgraded?

    Hi kenzo69!

There are 2 hardware components that are the easiest to upgrade in laptops (or in desktops):

    1. The Memory (RAM)
    2. Hard Drive (HDD)

You may also try downgrading to XP or turning off some unneeded features of Vista to optimize your system. Pero medyo mahabang discussion yan.

Let's keep it simple muna, try upgrading the RAM first.

Since your laptop runs on a Core2Duo processor, it supports up to 4GB of RAM. But the thing is, since your OS is 32-Bit only (vs. 64-bit), it will only use 3GB of it.

(Magulo ba? Hehe.) Simply put: Off hand, you may start by upgrading your RAM to 3GB.

This is easy to do. Consult your owner's manual on where your RAM is located. Usually it's at the bottom of the Laptop covered with flap that you can easily open naman. Most likely, you will find 2 sticks/modules of RAM there filling 2 RAM slots, 1gb each. No slot for a third 1 gb module so you'd have to take out one 1gb stick and replace it with 2gb of RAM.

Buy 2gb of RAM (pls check first WHAT kind of RAM your laptop runs on -- there are different kinds kasi: SDRAM -- which is almost obsolete, DDR and DDR2 -- most likely, yours is DDR2 but DDR2 has several kinds pa rin. It'd help if you will bring a stick of RAM from your laptop to the shop so the retailer could find the exact match). Heck, you can even ask the retailer to install the RAM for you if you think hassle lang if you'll try to do it on your own. Don't be afraid to remind them to be gentle with your gadget while installing RAM though. And don't forget to retrieve the extracted/replaced 1gb of RAM.

    Yan muna, Memory upgrade muna.

Believe me, once 3gb na yan, you'll really notice an increase in the performance of your machine

    Keep us posted.

een a single technical question so far. so i will try to see if you could help, if not, thanks anyway.

I currently having a problem in my HD:

    1. The master file table (MFT) in one of the drive partitions is corrupt. But the files in the partition are still there (i think, it can be found but cannot be accessed), I do not know how to fix it, and disk check utility doesn't work.

    2. I would like to recover the files in that partition. I just do not know how.

If either of the 2 issues mentioned are solved, I could rest easy. those 2 are the only blocks for me on fixing this problem.

    thanks techpinas!

paano po ba gamitin and verizon na LG phone?
    wala ba itong sim card?

  11. #31
wrong question to the wrong thread....... >_>

  12. #32
    Sgt. Marshall,

Verizon doesn't use simcards. It is a CDMA provider and in order to activate a Verizon phone, you'd have to contact Verizon.

    Hi H33ro!

I understand this is your main drive.
Have you tried removing it and connecting it to another computer as an auxiliary drive?
Almost always works. As an auxiliary drive, the computer won't care if it has corrupt partitions and it will then allow you to retrieve files or to copy them in another location.

Let me know if that helps.

    Another thing.

Can i have the video card upgraded also?! I got so dismayed when I got to play Red Alert 3 in my laptop. I can't set its resolution and video details to a maximum extent due to my existing video card.

hello sir, it's nice to know that you're answering the questions of some fellow pexers here as fast as you can...

could you please provide a review regarding these laptop models:

    Compaq CQ40-108-TU
    Lenovo G410
    Dell Inspiron 1525
Dell Vostro A840 (is this a UMPC? coz im kinda cofused!mura kasi eh 29k lang)
    Acer X80N

Which do you think is the best? saka madali ba silang mag-init?

    maraming salamat po...

  16. #36
    Hi Kenzo69!

Unfortunately, your laptop model has an integrated video card -- which is really less powerful than a discrete card lalo na when it comes to gaming or rending 3d graphics. In most cases, hindi na sya upgradeable but then there are new laptops that support 2 video cards -- one discrete and the other integrated. If your laptops has a slot for a discrete graphics card, I suggest you get one -- especially because it appears like you'd really need a boost sa video rendering.

But then, upgrading this won't be as simple as swapping RAM modules. I believe you'd really have to get help pagdating dyan.

Check with Asus first if your laptop model supports a discrete card upgrade. Sana, oo.

    Hi Javazcript!

    Those are fine machines!

    (And that's not Acer X80N, that's Asus. hehe. )

All of which are Consumer Notebooks (or 'Budget' Notebooks, if you wanna put it that way) except for one, the Dell Vostro A840, which is a Business Notebook.

As a Thinkpad fan, I tend to think that Notebook Companies tend to make better Business Notebooks than Consumer ones. Mas mahal kasi talaga ang Business Notebooks because these companies place the fastest and greatest parts in these machines.

And as such, I'd recommend the Vostro. (but that's just me) At 29k, steal na yan. Plus I think Dell support is getting better here na in the Philippines, since they've just opened their office dito.

Lenovo G410 follows the Dell Vostro closely -- but that's only because Lenovo makes the Legendary Thinkpads and upon touching G410 I felt that it incorporates some of the great Thinkpad features albeit shards of it lang.

After Lenovo, I'd recommend the Asus. Because Asus is good at hardward. Did you know that Apple commissions Asus to make iMac hardware?

    There you go.

Pero don't take my word for it ha, ask around parin.

    -
And no, Dell Vostro, is not a UMPC. It is the farthest from it.

A UMPC or UltraMobile Personal Computer is a category for all notebooks that weigh under 4 lbs. Different pa yan from a Netbook -- which is a low-power, low-cost UMPC.

    Thanks for the question javazcript!
I hope you find my answer helpful.

    By the way javazcript,

Dell has 2 business line notebooks:

    1. The Latitude
    2. The Vostro

The Latitude is for enterprise/corporate computing while The Vostro is for Small Business Owners.

    So it's like this:

    Latitude > Vostro

    but

    Vostro is definitely > Inspiron

    Inspiron is Dell's Consumer/Home-user line

    thanks for your reply techpinas.

the drive is actually a slave/auxiliary drive. i have 2 HDs. one is for my OS, the other is for the documents and programs. NTFS file system. i was able to access the first half partition of the HD, but not the second one. i checked the properties of the drive (in windows) and it say it is a raw drive (unformatted). however in DOS mode, i am able to determine the error on the erratic drive. i believe the files are still there (tried to access it in DOS via copy command and it responded as if it saw the directory, however it refused to proceed with the commad becaus of the corrupt MFT)

What's the internet service? DSL and Cable or similar (not dialup)? If yes, then you can buy Dual WAN router to achieve the backup scenario that you were talking about. You can even do load sharing (I think most, if not all, Dual WAN routers are capable of doing it).
