AS for the books (I'm almost done with the 3rd one), you can skip the GoT (first book) since the adaptation was very loyal. Pero suggest ko na basahin mo na din yung 2nd book dahil mejo madami daming nabago sa istorya.

Then continue on the 3rd obviously, the best book so far...

bumili nalang kayo books. 315 each at national bookstore. imo, its a small investment for a worthwhile reading experience. for me, iba pa din pag actual libro talaga ang hawak. pag sa ebook/pdf ako nagbabasa, ambilis sumuko ng mata ko. kaya grrm bilisan mo na magsulat sana!
