CNN: ‘Himala’ best Asian film in history
By Gerry Plaza

(UPDATE 3) MANILA, Philippines—A spellbinding victory for Philippine cinema.

Visitors to the Cable News Network entertainment website voted Ishmael Bernal’s “Himala,” which starred Nora Aunor as a simple provincial girl turned faith healer, as the best Asia-Pacific movie of all time, outclassing such greats as Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” and Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

Others in the top 10 that vied for the honor, in which “Himala” was the only Filipino film, included Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s “Mou Gaan Dou (Infernal Affairs)” from Hong Kong, Chan-wook Park’s “Old Boy” from South Korea, Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film “Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)” from Japan, Satyajit Ray’s “Pather Panchali” from India, Peter Weir’s “Gallipoli” from Australia, Wong Kar Wai’s “Chung Hing Sam Lam (Chungking Express)” from China, and Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s “Gabbeh” from Iran.

According to the CNN website, critics, industry insiders, Asian film stars, and CNN viewers chose the movies that landed in the shortlist of ten films. The online poll that ran in October determined the winner.

The Filipino classic, originally released in 1982, was announced the top vote-getter in the popular vote and named as CNN’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards Viewers Choice Award winner on Tuesday in a ceremony in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Hundreds of film industry luminaries from around the world attended the event.

well. true. good for himala, though personally, i would have preferred Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag to be there over Himala.

As for the winner, I would have preferred for Seven Samurai to win.

from a noranian...

..kahit sabihin po na Viewers Choice Award ito, we cannot discount the fact that CNN earlier had a shortlist of the best asia-pacific films and this list was done by a group of film critics and enthusiasts. At HIMALA lang ang pinoy film na pumasok meaning, its really the best Filipino film. Kumbaga, yung pagkapanalo natin ng Viewers Choice Award through internet voting is just an icing to the cake. Dahil kahit nung nasa list of twenty films pa lang eh THE BEST NA ANG HIMALA. Mabuhay si Elsa!!!

eto pa:

Re: [NA] CNN: "Himala" Best Asian Film in History -- PDI

It only shows that there are still many Noranians around. They are scattered all over the world. Some have outgrown themselves as Noranians but would try to make a glimpse of the past from time to time. Some have just remained silent but welcome positive developments about Nora. I, for one, had finished my studies, worked in a mutli-national corp.. for so many years, got married and now have a happy family, and presently on semi-retirement. However, there is still a void in me that longs for Nora. Oftentimes, I browse the internet and showbiz items for news regarding her. When I read about the voting about "Himala", I tried my best to vote as many times as possible. Now I rejoice with other Noranians regarding the outcome of this voting. Congratulations to all Noranians for making Nora in the news again!
