The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a grant of $1.5 million (around P64.5 million) from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction to BayaniJuan sa Southville 7, the 107-hectare relocation site comanaged by the National Housing Authority (NHA) and ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) in support of the Pasig River rehabilitation.

Signing the letter of agreement were ADB Southeast Asia Department Director General Kunio Senga, NHA General Manager Chito Cruz and AFI Managing Director Gina Lopez. Witnesses were Vice President Jejomar Binay and Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe.

The grant provides for the expansion of multisectoral partnerships between NHA and AFI; funds for electrification; the use of e-trikes and solar grids; and finances community initiatives, livelihood and enterprise development.

The NHA is the executive agency of the grant while AFI is the implementing agency.

BayaniJuan currently houses close to 6,000 families from the Estero de Paco, Pasig and Marikina in Calauan, Laguna.

Houses, schools, a livelihood center, health clinic, market and other community amenities such as children’s playgrounds and daycare centers had been constructed by AFI with help from Habitat for Humanity, Ayala Group, Lopez Group, Sunlife, San Miguel Corp., DMCI and SM.

The Diocese of San Pablo, Don Bosco and the Calauan local government are active partners in community development.

The grant will highlight multisectoral partnership in a poor community, which will be replicated in six other communities in the coming years.

“Para Sa Inyo Kapamilya” Gathers Filipino Community Together for a Good Cause
Thousands hail ABS-CBN Foundation International, TFC’s Balitang America for authentic Filipino advocacy and meaningful service
    May 29, 2012

The promise of the campaign that started in May was to invite Filipinos in the U.S. to join hands and celebrate the true essence of public service – a genuine giving back to the community.
By the end of the campaign on May 26 via a public service fair and a star-studded, world-class fundraising concert at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, aptly called, “Para Sa Inyo Kapamilya”, thousands from all sectors of the Filipino community hailed the campaign as real, meaningful Filipino advocacy and service for a noble cause.

10 Years of Committed Service to the Public
For the whole month of May, ABS-CBN Foundation International and The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) Balitang America - the non-profit sister organization of ABS-CBN International and the only daily locally produced Filipino news program in the U.S., respectively – launched May as its public service month to commemorate their 10 years of service to the overseas Filipinos and migrants in the U.S.

Tribals to Gina Lopez: Keep off our land

A dedicated environmentalist and scion of the politically influential Lopez family is under fire for her alleged plans to put up a tourism resort in the middle of sacred tribal ground in Palawan province.
Bert Palaan, a leader of Brooke’s Point Federation of Tribal Councils (BPFTC), has accused Gina Lopez and her environment protection arm, ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Kalikasan, of allegedly failing to practice what she was preaching when her construction crew forcibly took over their ancestral land at Sabsaban Falls, Barangay (village) Aribungos, in Brooke’s Point on March 25, reportedly with the aid of local police and military operatives.

Palaan said Lopez had proposed to put up offices and ecotourism facilities, such as hotel, restaurant and function areas, on the land. He said four lodging structures had been established for which the foundation was charging P25,000 for a day’s stay.

    25 trees cut?

“We are not against progress. We just wanted her to follow the process, such as consultation and getting our prior consent before taking over our ancestors’ land where our people go to worship and heal themselves,” Palaan said in a phone interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

“We thought she was for the protection of the environment and upholding the rights of the indigenous people. But why did she cut down 25 trees in a watershed area inside our holy ground? Why did she not consult with us or inform us of her plans?”

Lopez, managing director of the ABS-CBN Foundation, claimed in previous statements that she wanted to save the area from the ravages of mining companies by converting it into a biodiversity school.
Lopez, who has initiated a signature campaign against mining, has not replied to an Inquirer request for comment.

Ifugao Representative Teddy Brawner-Baguilat, chairman of the House committee on national cultural communities and vice chair of the committee on natural resources, said Lopez should have been more consistent in her advocacy.

“There should be no double standard here,” he said.

    No informed consent

While agreeing that Sabsaban Falls had a great tourism potential, Baguilat said ABS-CBN Foundation should have followed the rules.
“While ecotourism is preferred, any development work must and should be made to go through the same stringent Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) that the IPs (indigenous peoples) demanded of mining companies. Any project in an area considered sacred by IPs should be undertaken with consideration of not just the environment but also the rights of the IPs,” Baguilat said.

Palaan and 27 other BPFTC leaders have already written President Aquino, requesting him to intervene and stop the desecration of their land.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has already ordered an inquiry into the cutting of trees and takeover of the ancestral lands without the approval of the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) and the ancestral land domain owners in violation of Republic Act No. 8371, or the Indigenous People’s Rights Act.

Palaan said his group wanted the government to stop the project until Lopez had obtained an FPIC from the indigenous people in the area and a certificate of precondition from the NCIP.

Land Bank supports ABS-CBN Foundation projects
    Posted at 07/07/2012

MANILA, Philippines - The Land Bank of the Philippines inked an agreement with ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) to support the Bantay Baterya and Bantay Langis projects.

"This is a significant step we are glad to take with ABS-CBN Foundation as we work towards our mutual goal of environmental protection. By starting with small steps such as proper handling and disposal of used oil and batteries, organizations and individuals alike can help prevent further damage to the environment,"Land Bank senior vice president for corporate services Jocelyn Cabreza said, in a statement.

Cabreza signed the agreement together with AFI chief finance officer Clarissa Ocampo.

AFI's Bantay Baterya project aims to reduce pollutants caused by improper handling and disposal of batteries. It involves the collection of used, junk lead-acid batteries for recycling into fresh raw materials for the production of new batteries.

On the other hand, Bantay Langis facilitates the treatment and recycling of used industrial and engine oil.

Under the agreement, Land Bank will donate used batteries and used oil and their equivalent monetary value to AFI. AFI will coordinate the collection of the donated used batteries and oil through the partners – Philippine Recyclers Inc. (PRI) for the batteries and Genetron International Marketing Inc. for the used oil.

Land Bank is committed to sustainable development by maintaining environmentally-sound operations and implementing resource conservation and waste management initiatives.

Sun Life Financial, ABS-CBN turn over Legacy of Light
    Tuesday, 26 June 2012

SUN LIFE Financial-Philippines Foundation and ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. formally turned over the Legacy of Light Village, a socialized housing project for Metro Manila’s informal settlers, during simple rites on June 23.

The Legacy of Light Village was developed within the 110-hectare government relocation site in Barangay Santo Tomas through a P50-million donation from Sun Life Financial’s corporate social responsibility arm, the Sun Life Foundation.

Rizalina Mantaring, president and chief executive officer of the Sun Life Financial Group of Companies; Veronica Estrella, executive director of Sun Life Foundation, and ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. executive director Gina Lopez led the symbolic turnover of keys to the new homes of a total of 115 beneficiaries.

According to Mantaring, the beneficiaries represent the company’s 115 years of existence in the Philippines.

“This project is our way of giving back to the people and the communities,” she said and reiterated that Sun Life Financial will continue to pay forward through various projects to help communities.

Sun Life Financial, one of the country’s oldest life insurance companies, last year recorded a gross premium of P14 billion, besting all its competitors. Its net income last year was pegged at P3.0 billion.

According to Mantaring, the company is spending more than 1 percent of the company’s net income to various projects as part of its commitment to good corporate citizenship.

Incidentally, Lopez said the company’s humble beginnings could be traced to the Pasig River, noting that its first office was put up in Pasig City, also along the historic river 115 years ago.

The beneficiaries of the project, like other families who were relocated within the relocation site named BayaniJuan, came from the river banks of Pasig River after the devastation wrought by typhoon Ondoy.

Some of the 5,200 families are now permanent residents of BayaniJuan, says Girlie Aragon, its project manager for ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. Of the number, about 3,500 were rendered homeless by Ondoy, which flooded 90 percent of Metro Manila and other low-lying towns and cities in Luzon for weeks, while 1,700 families came from Estero de Paco in Pandacan, Manila, a tributary of Pasig River which was turned into a park as part of the clearing operation initiated jointly by the government and ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit-Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig.

The modest housing units, with a floor area of 30 sq m, costs around P137,000. It comes with potable water and electricity.

The BayaniJuan relocation site was developed in partnership with the National Housing Authority (NHA). It was designed to be a small but self-sustaining community.

Near the relocation site, there are three public elementary schools and one high school, a public market, a church and within the Legacy of Light Village is a children’s playground.

Lopez said an industrial park will soon rise within the relocation site, which will help provide jobs to people who have been relocated from various parts of Metro Manila.

“The industrial park is being worked out. We already have a list of five locators who committed to set up shop nearby,” she said.

According to Lopez, ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. will continue to provide seminars as part of a livelihood program for the project beneficiaries to encourage them to stay in their new homes.

ABS CBN DELUGED WITH CALLS FOR HELP AMID MASSIVE FLOODING IN METRO MANILA
    Aug 7, 2012

Redwood City, Calif. (August 7, 2012) – Metro Manila resident Josephine Cruz’s plea was loud and clear over ABS CBN’s flagship radio AM station, DZMM (630 kHz in Metro Manila). Trapped in her house with her 83-year-old grandmother and 11 of her family members, she frantically cried, “Please rescue my family!” In the last 24 hours, as flood waters continued to rise in Metropolitan Manila as a result of torrential rains, similar pleas for help also came through the air. By Tuesday morning, 60 people have perished, while thousands continue to be transported to evacuation centers. ABS CBN Foundation International announces the reactivation of Sagip Kapamilya, a disaster rescue, relief and rehabilitation program, as the rescue operations are now a race against time.

What began as a typical, seasonal monsoon for the 12 million residents of the Philippine capital quickly became a deadly deluge of torrential rains that caused the overflow of dams and rivers. By Tuesday evening, Manila time, most of Metropolitan Manila was under waist- to neck-deep waters.

As of August 7 (Manila time), Sagip Kapamilya’s rescue operations has reached 12,552 residents. Sagip Kapamilya staff and volunteers are responding to the emergency needs of people inside the evacuation centers. Special attention is being given to children, expectant mothers and the elderly. The immediate needs in the centers include a steady supply of rice; canned goods and other non-perishable food items; clothes for adults, children and infants; blankets and mats; first aid and medicine.

The collective donation of overseas Filipinos has always been the single largest and most reliable source of support for Sagip Kapamilya.

“We humbly call on all overseas Filipinos and our friends to assist in any way to help Filipinos affected by the recent floods in Metropolitan Manila,” says J. Robbie Fabian, President of ABS CBN Foundation International.

“Because the needs are immediate we encourage gifts of cash at this time. Our commitment is to remit the donations within 24 to 48 hours of accepting them so items of greatest need can be purchased immediately on the ground.”

ABS CBN Foundation International remits 100% of all donations to Sagip Kapamilya in Manila for use in the rescue, relief and long-term rehabilitation of communities affected by natural disasters. All donations in the U.S. are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by U.S. laws.

Donations of checks or money orders can be sent to ABS CBN Foundation International at 150 Shoreline Drive, Redwood City, CA 94065. Contributions also be made online at www.abscbnfoundation.org.
