Aside from taking the Asian Spirit which is less than an hour airport to airport, the fastest way is:

Manila to Tarlac City via NLEX and SCTEX - 1 1/2 hours

Tarlac City to Urdaneta Pangasinan - 1 1/2 hours

Urdaneta Pangasinan to Baguio via Kennon Rd - 1 1/2 hours


So there. Total of about 4 1/2 hours.

Off to Baguio City to beat the summer heat? Here’s a "faster" and shorter route by car, recommended by the private auto club Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) in going to the country’s summer capital from Metro Manila.

According to the route surveyed by AAP rally navigators, the route goes through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) straight to the Tarlac exit of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX).

From the SCTEX Tarlac exit, hit the Tarlac City exit, then turn right to La Paz. One would see the "To La Paz – to Tarlac City" road sign, AAP said.

"After 5 kms, turn left opposite a chapel with a green roof. After 15.2 kms turn right at the T-junction.

You will pass a water tower, then the Victoria town hall. After 0.1 km, take the road on the left. You will see a plaza and the Towncall Bank," AAP said.

The following are instructions for the rest of the route:

"After 6.3 kms you will reach a crossroads at the town of Pura, Tarlac. You will see the ‘Alternate route to Baguio’ road sign. Do not follow this road sign, because it will lead you to Paniqui. Turn right instead towards Guimba. After 11.5 kms turn left, when you see a green stone marker with Cuyapo sign. You will pass the "RosalesUmingan-San Jose" road sign."

"After 29.2 kms turn left when you reach a Shell gas station. After 2.3 kms, turn right at the crossroads. You will see the Carmak shop. After 8.0 km, turn left. You will see the ‘Magilas Trail’ road sign. As you drive on, you will see the ‘Tayug’ road sign.

"Drive further until you reach the crossroads, turn left before the Ace Petroleum gas station. After 3.1 kms, you will see the "to Asingan – to Binalonan" road sign in Pangasinan. Do not follow the sign. Drive straight and cross the long bridge to Asingan."

"After 3.9 kms turn right at the T-junction where you will see the V.C. Bautista Construction Supply. After 6.6 kms, turn right at another T-junction. After 0.7 km, turn left. After 0.5 km, turn right. You will see a Petron gas station. Drive on and enter the main highway to Baguio City."

In coming home to Metro Manila from Baguio, follow these instructions from AAP:

"After the Luzon Bible College in Binalonan, turn left away from the main highway. After 1.7 km, turn left. You will see a Petron gas station and the Binalonan public library. After 0.6 km, turn right. Follow the ‘Magilas Trail’ road signs. After 0.6 km, turn left. You will see the ‘Alternate route to Manila’ road sign."

"Drive on for another 6.6 kms Turn left when you see the V.C. Bautista Construction Supply. After 3.9 kms, you will pass a crossroad. Just drive straight and cross the long bridge. After 3.1 kms, turn right. After 4.6 kms, turn right. After 7.8 kms, drive straight on. Do not follow the road signs. After 0.2 km, turn left when you see Carmak."

"After 2.3 kms, when you see a Shell gas station, turn right. Drive on for another 29.2 kms. Turn right when you see the green stone marker. After 11.5 kms, turn left at the crossroads. After 6.3 kms, turn right at the T-junction. You will see the Towncall Bank. After 0.1 km, turn left. You will see the Victoria Town Hall followed by a water tower. After 15.2 kms, turn right when you see the chapel with a green roof. After 5 kms, turn left to SCTEX. After 40 kms, enter NLEX."

AAP officials said travel time is shorter, because the motorist bypasses the heavy traffic at Luisita (Tarlac), Carmen, and Urdaneta (Pangasinan).

The AAP stressed that the route is for daytime travel only as "at night, highwaymen may be lurking in the dark expanses of the thinly populated areas. You cannot expect help in emergencies at night along this route."

The AAP also cautioned travelers on the "palay, green and red labuyo, and chili peppers being dried along the narrow roads" baked by the sun.

"Before driving on, make sure to fill up the gas tank and your tummies because there are hardly any fastfood facilities and the gas stations are few and far between. Their toilets are not so clean," the AAP advised motorists on its website, www.aaphilippines.org.

no need to go the whole route.

you can just exit pura and use the national highway going to baguio.

the problem with the alternate routes is that you have to pass through 2 lane roads which you will share with tricycles, jeeps, very old cars and even kuligligs!

also, the farmers lay their harvested palay on the road to dry. so nagiging one lane na lang siya. you can pass through the palay pero at a much slower speed.

just exit through pura so you can avoid tarlac city traffic and the newly dreaded choke point, SM TARLAC. marami naman signs so di kayo maliligaw.

also, 4am-5am is the best time to travel to baguio. pag 12am-3am kasi marami kayong makakasabay na trucks and vegetable carrying jeeps (which are also slow). its harder to overtake a line of trucks than a few sporadic ones during mornings.

dumaan kami sa alternative route na yan 2-3 weeks ago lang. maganda road pero mas nalalayuan ako nakakainip! dun na lang ako sa old road. pag gusto mo gumamit ng restroom or nagutom ka pwede ka huminto.

I passed through this late at night the other week. The digging then started right after a blind curve so i went straight through it . Good thing the car i was driving had a high ground clearance so it went through without scraping its underchassis.

share ko lang na try ko na lahat ng mga sinabi ditong route so far ang pinaka malapit at pinaka mabils na daan pa rin eh via Camiling Tarlac...

from Tarlac City to Damortis about 1 hour and 20 minutes lang ang travel time (Kennon Road na yun less than 2Km from Damortis - kanan sa McArthur)
walang traffic, walang tricycle wala ding mga maalaking truck na kasing bagal ng pagong...

Been using the route posted by Boiling point, so far that route is the best for me.

No traffic, 60 to 80 KPH. Stress free driving. Departure time Manila 4 or 5 am.

Dati nag-convoy kami ng 2 kaibigan ko, going back to Manila only took me 3.5 hours. Muntik na ring mabangga sa bus that time. Scary.
