Yes, the POS terminal is inter-connection with the banking network in short it's like the POS connected to a ATM machine

First the cashier will ask you for the available balance, swipe your card and input your PIN then you will see the available balance

Second, the items you purchase will be charge to your account, swipe the card and input your PIN then you will have the receipt

The balance inquiry is only to check if the POS would be able to communicate with your bank, if not then there will be communication problems during the transction and you will not able to charge the items to your account

^Are you talking about plain ATM card? Of course I can't use my ATM Debit card without activating it first. What I meant on my post is that when i used my the ATM Debit Card to pay my purchase they did not ask for my PIN. They asked for my valid ID and they just swipe the card then ask me to sign charge slip just like using credit card..

  7. #27
oh sorry ) You never mentioned you did something else to authenticate you as the card owner. That should work as well but I've never tried that before. They always ask for a PIN for me

5k pesos lang ang daily limit for signature based transactions for BDO ATM debit cards.

for paypass cards, transactions worth more than 500 pesos require a PIN. less than that amount you can just tap it on the card reader.

  9. #29
^ I see. My purchase does not exceed 5K kaya signature lang siguro saka ID hiningi

  10. #30
    ^

That's also what BDO support said.

If you use your BDO card as a credit card/signature based, then
    5k is the limit

If you use it like a debit card with PIN then 50k is the limit.

Very disturbing personally, makatakot kng mawala mo card mo.
    In danger 5k mo hehe
Its not like a credit card... debited again sa account mo yun.

    @maedez,

Pinapa balance inquiry rin ako, normally sa mga alanganin na
dates.. i.e. a few days before sahod when most people have
already used up their money hehe

based on my experience with my BDO ATM debit card, it varies eh, minsan signature, minsan PIN. i suppose it depends on the terminal or store.

Debit Cards To Manage Your Finances

Some Tidbits on Philippine Debit/Prepaid/Loadable Cash Cards

One way of managing your finances without the use of credit cards is by getting a debit card (or prepaid card or cash card or stored value card whichever you may call it). You will be able to really have that discipline in spending your money since what you purchase depends on what you currently have saved in your card.

There are so many names for these cards but the main purpose is the same: you have to load funds to it in order for you to be able to use it, just like in the case of a prepaid phone -- you can't call/txt until you put enough funds to it.

Below are just some of the banks and companies offering different types of prepaid cards, cash cards, etc. to help you decide on which card you think would be best suited for your lifestyle. I have placed all the four cards that I currently have and made some research on the others via online and phone call inquiries.

Here's a more logical explanation for the signature and pin discussion.

Since the BDO ATM debit card has both the Expressnet/MegaLink/BancNet and Mastercard logos, your purchasing procedures varies as well depending on the store you're buying from.

If the establishment has an Expressnet/MegaLink/BancNet Point of Sale (POS), the cashier will ask you to encode your PIN (and yes, sometimes twice and this has already been explained in one of the previous messages). You can think of it as withrawing from an ATM using your ATM card.

On the other hand, if the establishment is a Mastercard accredited store, then just like when you are purchasing using your credit cards, that would be the time the cashier will ask you to affix your signature on to the sales slip.

So you see, it all depends on the POS available for each store which is why they have different POSs for different types of cards. But in some cases, some cashiers will ask you to do both which will really make you wonder why especially when you only have an ATM card.

You can also read some info on the thread I posted about debit/prepaid/reloadable/cash cards.

    http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/...d.php?t=518953

    http://honeyganda.blogspot.com/2011/...-finances.html

    Anyway, hope this helps.

Sometimes they would check your balance first before charging the transaction, so that in the event that a communication error occurs, they would be able to check if your account was debited or not.

There are merchants or stores that will not require a PIN depending on the situation. For example, if you use your debit card in a fine dining or full-service restaurant they will not ask you to get up and from your seat and walk to where the POS terminal is just to enter your PIN. That will be inconvenient on your part.

    UPDATE: FOR BDO Cash Card

-Can be used for purchases within the Philippines only since it's accepted at MegaLink/Expressnet/Bancnet accredited establishments ; can't be used for online purchases

  17. #37
I use my debit card a lot even if I have cash with me.

Based from my experience, they either ask for my PIN or have me just sign the receipt like a credit card purchase.

  18. #38
If you have 10,000 pesos cash to spare, consider opening a secured credit card instead. A secured credit card has all the benefits of a regular credit card, such as added security, option to purchase in installment, rewards/discounts/freebies, etc., and the most important of all, the opportunity to start building your own credit history. A debit card does not have any of these, and more. For further reading: Advantage of Credit.

Now, while a secured credit card has all the purchasing power of a regular credit card, it does not have the high risk of getting you into debt. This is simply because it is a "secured" account. If you default on your account, the bank will simply forfeit your security deposit. In essence, with a secured credit card you will only be using money which you already have.

To learn more about secured credit cards, visit the Secured Credit Cards thread.

^Tomo! Nakakalimutan ko din kasi minsan magwithdraw Or minsan may sudden purchase ako pero kelangan ko ng cash sa ibang occasions.

    Yep, debit card yun.
