    New details on Frankie Lim:

    I thought he's already out:
NCAA Basketball: San Beda coach Frankie Lim on his way out?
ADRIAN DY, GMA News March 27, 2012 1:02pm
    146 3 Email0 ShareThis149

(Updated 11:36 p.m.) With his resignation said to be imminent, multi-titled San Beda coach Frankie Lim gave an emotional speech to his players during their practice on Tuesday, leading his son and a guard on the team, Melo Lim, to tweet that it was the "worst day of my life."

This writer reported earlier that Coach Lim had already resigned from his position as head coach, which led Coach Lim's wife, Olen Lim, to issue a denial on her Facebook account, saying, "We have NOT tendered any resignation to the school.

"Coach Frankie has spoken to his players on the most likely situation and has only expressed his gratitude, love and appreciation for his players and asst coaches. It will be very unprofessional and irresponsible to come out with this news without giving the school first notice and without confirmation from our end. If there will be announcements it will come on our terms and our time. We thank you all for the love and support."

While Lim has not tendered a resignation, a source close to the team told GMA News Online that the school will be making an announcement on Lim's status as coach within the week. A second source confirmed to GMA News that Lim will be meeting tomorrow with Manuel V. Pangilinan, San Beda Red Lions basketball patron, before any announcement is made.

The move comes presumably after the school was unable to appeal the coach’s two-year ban from the NCAA, a sanction stemming from the coach’s involvement in a brawl with San Sebastian College-Recoletos volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb, which also drew in members of the Red Lions basketball squad and injured a female San Sebastian player.

Lim was brought on to replace Koy Banal after the 2006-07 season, and he proved to be an adept mentor for the team, steering them to NCAA titles in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.

The two-year ban would have prevented Lim from prowling the sidelines during games, but the school had earlier considered the possibility of one of Lim’s assistants taking charge during the NCAA season, with Lim in a quasi-advisory capacity.

The ban also would have had no effect in other tournaments, which would have allowed Lim to take the wheel during the upcoming FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament, the Father Martin Cup, and the post-season Philippine Collegiate Champions League.

Should Lim's resignation push through, the team will be forced to start anew, with three months to go before the NCAA season kicks off and the team attempts a three-peat.

"Definitely the saddest and worst practice of my life!" tweeted San Beda forward Rome De La Rosa. "Wish I could have ended my college career with Coach FL."

NC meets on SBC, SSC appeal

MANILA, Philippines - The NCAA policy board will decide today on San Beda and San Sebastian’s motions seeking to reduce the sanctions slapped on their players and coaches for their involvement in a brawl during a volleyball game in San Beda last December.

First on the table is the Lions’ appeal to reduce the penalty slapped on foreign players Nigerian Ola Adeogun and American Julius Armon and eight other suspended local cagers for taking part in the fracas, management committee chair Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Season 88 host Letran told The STAR yesterday.

The Stags have also appealed the two-year ban meted on SSC volley coach Roger Gorayeb.

San Beda is seeking a two- or three-game suspension on Adeogun and Armon instead of one year.

Also on appeal are the two-game suspensions issued to Kyle Pascual, Jake Pascual, Jaypee Mendoza, Rysie Koga, Rome dela Rosa, Jose Carmelo Lim, Baser Amer and Antonio Caram.

“The school is appealing for the reduction of their punishments,” said San Beda athletic director Ato Badolato.

The board will also discuss the “no foreign player” policy to be implemented after a three-year transition period.

The 2014 schedule is being proposed to give member schools a two-year transition period wherein they could form an all-Filipino team.

However, the new ruling does not cover foreign players who have been recruited before its approval, including Adeogun and Armon, who already underwent years of residency and are expected to see action this year.

The league is also expected to officially forge a three-year partnership with TV 5’s sports channel AKTV on IBC 13.

The new partnership marks the first time that the NCAA will go on a collision course with the UAAP as the former is holding its basketball games on the same days as the latter.

“We’ll be holding our games on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and we’re planning to add a game or two on a Sunday or just before the PBA games,” said Calvo.

Calvo said they’re also planning to hold out-of-town games this year and at venues owned by NCAA members’ sister schools in the provinces to widen its fan base all over the country.

WHAT DO U THINK OF THIS ?????

    Ncaa And Uaap Go Head-To-Head
    College Leagues In Ratings Battle
    By Kristel Satumbaga
    June 21, 2012, 1:25am

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) does not believe the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is the better college in sporting competition even though many factors seem to confirm this such as attendance records and television ratings.

To prove its point, the NCAA yesterday announced that beginning this season, many of its scheduled games will go head-to-head with the UAAP on television after the NCAA launched its new partnership with AKTV Channel 5.

Whereas the NCAA used to have its games held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to avoid conflict with the UAAP, it will now air its games Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, thus making Thursdays and Saturdays a battle for audience as well as commercials between the two leagues.

"We can't avoid to compare things (with the UAAP), but I'm sure with this kind of setup, it will give us an opportunity to show NCAA's worth as the oldest collegiate league in the country," said Policy Board President Fr. Tamerlane Lana of host Letran during a press briefing yesterday.

The NCAA said it broke away from ABS-CBN its coveror of the past 10 years, which aired the games on Studio 23, because it was given by AKTV an offer it could not refuse.

AKTV, which is owned by businessman Manny V. Pangilinan, said it will give the NCAA the coverage it deserves by promising to air its games on prime time, which is from 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

"There will be new expectations, new hopes and challenges. We'd like to cope with those challenges," said Fr. Lana.

The opening doubleheader on Saturday will pit host Letran College against San Sebastian College at 5 p.m., while Mapua Institute of Technology clashes with Jose Rizal University at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, reigning champion San Beda got a reprieve from the league’s Policy Board after the one-year ban of Nigerian rookie center Ola Adeogun was reduced to just four games instead of six.

The Red Lions, however, will play with only six players in their first game against Arellano on Sunday following the one-game ban on Baser Amer, Anjo Caram, Ryussei Koga, Carmelo Lim, JP Mendoza, Jake Pascual, Kyle Pascual and Michole Sorela for their participation in a melee that involved their former coach Frankie Lim and San Sebastian’s volleyball mentor in Roger Gorayeb.

    Mapua completes gusty monday upset

    It must be the weather.

NCAA Season 88: Mapua Cardinals vs. CSB Blazers, July 5Despite some missing parts, the Mapua Cardinals controlled the game from start to finish for a 61-54 finish, completing a monday, August 6 shocker with a victory over the San Sebastian Golden Stags to hike upgrade their record to a 3-5 win-loss slate at The Arena in San Juan City.

“I just can’t believe it until the final buzzer sounded,” said Mapua mentor Chito Victolero, praising all his players for a job well done after snapping a four-game losing slide. “My players did their roles and I’m happy with the outcome.”

From their 10-7 first quarter lead then 26-15 by halftime, the Cardinals maintained a nine-point spread, 39-30, at the start of the final quarter.

“It’s their night. We tried everything but we couldn’t win it,” said last year’s Most Valuable Player Calvin Abueva, who had a double-double performance with 15 points and had 14 rebounds. “It only means, the win really belongs to them, but we will come back.”

Josan Nimes, struggling the past few games, erupted with 15 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Cardinals rookie Joseph Eriobu made a huge contribution with 15 points including a 3/3 shooting clip within 2-point range. Mapua were mission the services of Andretti Stevens, Jumel Chien, Darell Magsigay, and Michael Abad due to an assortment of injuries.

“It’s definitely our defense that keyed this win as what our coach told us after the game and he’s happy about it,” said Eriobu, noting that San Sebastian’s 88.3 points per game average score challenged them earlier. “Our coach told us if we can limit it, and we responded very well.” Mike Parala added 14 points for Mapua.

After missing the last game with a strained knee, Ian Sangalang suited up for the Golden Stags and had 8 points and 9 boards in 23 minutes of action.

The Golden Stags are tied with the JRU Heavy Bombers at 6-2.

    Individual Scores:

    MIT 61 - Eriobu 15, Nimes 15, Parala 14, Banal J. 4, Ighalo 4, Cantos 3, Banal G. 2, Brana 2, Saitanan 2.

    Title, Bragging Rights At Stake
SBC, Letran Begin Best-Of-Three NCAA Title Series Today
    By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
    October 17, 2012, 10:07pm

One team is the most successful of the decade while the other is the hottest squad of the season. And both have 16 championships each.

With that, the stage is set for the start of the NCAA basketball championship best-of-three series today with San Beda Red Lions seeking their third straight title and the Letran College Knights going for their first in seven years.

Game time is 6 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lions have returned to the NCAA with a vengeance.

After languishing without a title for 28 years, San Beda has won with amazing regularity, winning five titles in a span of six years beginning in 2005.

But the Red Lions will be up against a team that is on a roll.

The Knights have not dropped a single game in eight matches – a run highlighted by a two-game sweep of the San Sebastian Stags in their Final Four series.

In the backdrop of this series, some bragging rights are also at stake.

Both teams are tied for most titles in the 88-year history of the league with 16 apiece. So the tie will be broken and the winner will take the title and the bragging rights.

“It’s going to be a long series,” predicted San Beda team manager Jude Roque. “I think both teams are evenly matched.”

Although both teams have played in nearly all of 88 years, this marks only the third time they will meet in the finals.

The Knights won the title the first time they met in 1950, while the Lions avenged it with a sweep in 2007.

Despite being on top for most part of the season, the Lions know what the Knights can bring to the table.

Though Letran’s last defeat was against San Beda on Sept. 1, 68-62, the momentum has dramatically shifted to the Knights.

For one, their victory over the Stags was a confidence-builder. Two of three San Beda’s defeats this season were inflicted by the Stags.

San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc said their mission of staying on top until the end will be their battle cry, but they will have to “work harder, pray harder, and be more mentally prepared than ever.”

“We expect this to be tough, and we will look back at those defeats against San Sebastian and Perpetual and that big first win for us with only six players, as a springboard to work harder this time,” said Magsanoc, whose team finished the elims on top at 15-3 and did not need to maximize their twice-to-beat edge in ousting University of Perpetual Help, 56-52, in the semis to make it to the title round.

As usual, Magsanoc will again bank on Nigerian center Ola Adeogun, Baser Amer, Jake Pascual and Rome Dela Rosa.

But Letran’s Kevin Alas, Jam Cortes and Kevin Racal – whose averages put them in the Top 20 best scorers in the season – pose as big offensive threats.

“We are known for our defense, while Letran has been playing great offense in their last games, so I think that will be the challenge,” Roque said.

Letran coach Louie Alas, whose team has not yet won against San Beda in their last 14 meetings since 2007, wants to see two important things on his stalwarts come Game 1.

“Poise and patience. Hindi pa tapos ang misyon namin,” said the elder Alas.

“At saka pagdating sa championship, 50 percent na dun yung Xs and Os, 50 percent yung willingness to win. At least yung willingness, meron na kami non; yung technical na lang ang pag-aaralan namin,” he added.

Letran finished the elims at 12-6 on for third place, arranging a semis meeting with second seed San Sebastian which has a twice-to-beat edge. They swept the Stags, 92-74, last Saturday and 73-70 last Monday.

Meanwhile, Game 1 of the juniors final also fires off today with four-peat seeking San Beda Red Cubs clashing with old nemesis San Sebastian Staglets at 4 p.m.

SAN Beda College is on track in winning its third consecutive NCAA general championship after ruling four first semester events in Season 88.

Aside from completing a ‘three-peat’ in seniors basketball, the Red Lions also topped men’s table tennis competitions and swept the men’s and women’s swimming titles.

College of Saint Benilde, San Beda’s main threat for the overall crown, copped two titles in the first semester, in women’s table tennis and chess.

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta also took two championships after ruling the women’s and men’s beach volleyball events.

Boasting as one of the strongest sports programs in the league, the Lions fell short in winning a fifth one after placing second in women’s table tennis.

Seeking to regain the overall championship they last won in 2008, the Blazers settled for the runner-up honors in men’s and women’s swimming, as well as in men’s table tennis.

Action in second semester begins this month with the volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan, with the Altas hoping to retain the championship in women’s and men’s division.

Also in the second semester, San Beda is also seeking to cement its domination in football and men’s taekwondo, while St. Benilde is defending its women’s taekwondo tiara.

Letran and Jose Rizal University, meanwhile, are staking their lawn tennis and athletics crowns, respectively.
