Kaya ang Benilde at Mapua wag nyong i count out.

Guest teams spice up race for NC plum
    Updated June 03, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - With three guest school teams allowed to vie for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship, a wide-open race is expected when the country’s oldest collegiate league unwraps its 85th season later this month.

Jose Marie Lacson, chairman of the NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM), made the assessment in the weekly PSA Forum Tuesday at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch, where he also mentioned the preparations being undertaken by this year’s host San Beda College.

The NCAA formally opens shop on June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum with the centerpiece event of basketball. Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Angeles University Foundation are competing as guest teams, making this year’s roster a 10-team field.

“Usually when you have guest teams, they are not allowed to compete for the championship. But we want them to be competitive. So the MANCOM ruled that they too, can win the championship,” said the San Beda official.

Aside from basketball, the three schools are also required to compete in five of the league’s regular events, among them swimming, volleyball, football, track and field and cheerdance competition.

Excelling in any of these events could easily make a case for any of the three guest teams on their probable future in the league.

“A good showing will be a big boost in their respective bids for regular membership in the NCAA,” said Lacson in the public sports program sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and Outlast Battery.

Lacson won’t go into the finer details of the opening ceremonies to be presented by San Beda, except by saying that “it’s going to be one of the best you will see in years.”

Multi-titled collegiate coach Aric Del Rosario has been appointed commissioner of the basketball event for the season, which has the theme “Winning Drive at 85.”

Others included in the league’s calendar of events are chess, lawn tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball and soft tennis as demonstration sport.

San Beda will be gunning for a fourth straight men’s basketball title minus key players Sam Ekwe, Pong Escobal and Ogie Menor.

But Lacson said the Red Lions are looking good even without some of the pieces of their champion team. In general however, he said, ‘all schools had improved.’

“Of course, that’s good for the league because we always want competition,” said the MANCOM chief.

San Sebastian, Jose Rizal University, University of Perpetual Help-Dalta, Mapua, Letran and St. Benilde comprised the rest of the NCAA.

NCAA to open with a bang
    By FRANCIS SANTIAGO
    June 2, 2009, 7:22pm

The 85th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) fires off on June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum with a promise of a lavish opening ceremony that has never been seen before.

“If it’s not one of the best opening ceremonies, it could be best,” said NCAA Management Committee (ManCom) chairman Jose Mari Lacson of host San Beda as he drummed up the opening of the country’s oldest collegiate league.

“I don’t want to disclose yet the details but for sure, we want to start the NCAA with a good show.”

Speaking at the PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Ave., Lacson said that aside from a glamorous opening festivity, there are other things to watch out for in the league including the entry of three guest teams – Emilio Aguinaldo College, Arellano University and Angeles University – that are expected to spice up the hostilities.

“We want to uplift the league that’s why we tried having 10 teams this season,” said Lacson of the 10 squads competing, which will be the biggest in the 85-year history of the league.

The three guest squads have reportedly been applying to join the league early this year, but did not meet the requirements. It takes three years to be a bonafide member-school.

But as guest teams, Lacson said, the three teams will enjoy the same privilege as other regular member-teams, including the acquisition of foreign players for basketball teams as long as they comply with requirement of the player having a two-year residency.

The three teams are said to have the edge among other applicants to be part of the NCAA family that include grand slam basketball champion San Beda College, San Sebastian College, Jose Rizal University, Letran, Perpetual Help and College of St. Benilde.

NCAA to adopt new rule on protest
    By Julius Manicad
    06/08/2009

    source: http://www.tribune.net.ph/sports/20090608spo6.html

Starting this year, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will adopt measure intended to make it hard — and expensive — for team/s filing protest during the season.

A prominent member of the NCAA management committee (mancomm) yesterday said the league made some major revisions in its guidelines, making it hard for its members to file protests that would disrupt the staging of Season 85.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said the league will require its members to file eligibility complaints a day after the end of the first round of a double-round tournament while game protests should be filed right after the game, giving mancomm enough time to investigate and — if there’s merit — elevate it before the powerful NCAA policy board for another round of probe and final decision.

    But there’s also money involved.

Before a member could put a specific game under protest, it should post a bond of P5,000 while eligibility protests require P10,000 to move. The league, however, would return the bond once it finds legitimacy in the complaint.

“Now, nobody would wait until the championship before filing a protest, especially on the eligibility status of some players,” the source said. “We’re just trying to make sure that only legitimate protests would be tackled. The league already had enough (of those controversies.)”

Last year, the country’s oldest collegiate league was bombarded with a flurry of controversies, ranging from eligibility to game-fixing. But the biggest story was the suspension of the Philippine Christian University, which was caught fielding four ineligible athletes in its junior ranks that led to a one-year suspension.

The source also added the league allows foreign players to see action for as long as they have already completed the required two-year residency. Host San Beda College will reportedly parade an American import while Jose Rizal University be banking on a pair of Cameroonian reinforcements.

“Everything is above board as far as the foreign athletes are concerned,” the source said. “We already made our screening and we found nothing anomalous. We can guarantee that.”

Action unfurls on June 27 with three guest teams; Arellano University, Angeles University Foundation and Emilio Aguinaldo College, trying to fill the void left by the Dolphins. They, however, have to re-apply again before being granted full membership status next year.

I hope they took precautions regarding the AH1N1 flu virus. Going to crowded places like Araneta on opening day or even the rest of the games can discourage a lot of fans.
