LAA hosts 80th birthday of Ortiz
    - Letran News September 2009

The officers and board of directors of the Letran Alumni Association, Inc. (LAA) hosted a testimonial dinner last September 19 in celebration of the 80th birthday of one of their beloved alumni, Justo Ortiz.

Ortiz, a member of high school Class ’47 was described in the Letran Mirror (his yearbook) by classmate Cesar Zalamea as “… very friendly, courageous and very resourceful; ha [a] cleft chin and a vociferous tongue; is handsome...” He was a member of the senior varsity team, a staff of the Letran News, and instructor in Spanish, among others.

The advance birthday fete (Ortiz was born on September 22, 1929) was held at the Liem Garden.

The affair started with a Mass officiated by Fr. Thomas Lopez Francisco, O.P. with Fr. Orlando Aceron, O.P. In his homily Father Tom exhorted the attendees to be “men for others” and wished that the celebrator would continue his generosity and in helping others in every way that he could.

Ortiz was accompanied by his family – Tona Ortiz, twin daughters Maria Ynez Calma and Maria Teresa Hernandez, and Justo Ortiz, Jr. His two other children, Miguel Ortiz, Jr. and Maria Christina Garcia, reside in the US.

The officers of LAA, headed by its president Eugene Sy, came in full force.

Jay Llantada and Jonathan Gayetano hosted the affair.

Attendees included Vicente Ayllon, Frank Eizmendi, Freddie Webb, Atty. Augusto Aligada, Jr., Tony Gomez, Ben Hur Gomez, Jimmy Cura, Fr. Pompeyo de Mesa, O.P., Gen. Ferdinand Bocobo, Gabriel Ripoll, Jose Berenquer Testa, Willam Uy, Willam Go, Charlie Yu, and other alumni.
