Background: JRU ended the FilOil preseason with a 3-5 record. Their offensive production dipped from 71 during Season 87 to 66.5 during the summer. Their turnovers are at a constant since 2011 at 20 per game. Rebounding has not improved at 39 per game against 41 in Season 87. This means a whole lot of work for the Heavy Bombers if they want to improve their post elimination record.
Key Changes: Pressure defense will be their main weapon to create points off turnovers. Without a legitimate bigman, none in that roster has had a double-digit performance on the rebounding department during the preseason and that alone would limit their options offensively.
Outlook: Nate Matute has improved offensively from 32% FG % in Season 87 to 36% during the preseason but he should not carry that burden alone. The veterans would have to step-up and work on both ends.
Phil-American rookie Brandon Porter is a late addition to the team but is expected to play right away alongside Matute in the backcourt and would probably come off the bench as a reliever to veteran playmaker, Alex Almario. John Lopez, Ralph Monserat, who got 10 rebounds in their game against the Blazers last May 30, and Cris dela Paz will have to work extra hard on the glass.
Prognosis: Their defensive pressure will fuel their offense and that has been their system since the Aerial Voyager took over as coach since Season 86. With the other teams improving, they will be a threat to JRU’s Final Four ambitions.
