MANILA, Philippines—A big name is out to lend a big hand to an oft-overlooked school.
One of the country’s richest families was at ringside for a taste of UAAP hoop action, bringing along with it plans to beef up a school’s education and sports programs.
Wearing a yellow collared shirt, Hans Sy inconspicuously watched from the gallery as the National University battled the University of the Philippines in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Sy, the president of SM Prime Holdings Inc., graced the game to get a feel of the UAAP and see how his family can help improve NU’s stock.
“Sports and education go hand in hand,” said Sy just a month after his father and mall magnate Henry Sy Sr.—the Philippines’ second richest individual with an estimated wealth of $3.9 billion—bought majority of the shares of NU.
“We’re still very new. We’re observing first, then we’ll make our move.”
The Sys, who also own a minority share at Far Eastern University, aim to improve NU’s quality of education, develop its sports program and rebuild school infrastructure.
“Our priority is really education for the people,” said Sy.
Although the NU Bulldogs dropped their first game against the UP Maroons, 86-72, Sy hardly looked disheartened and reiterated his family’s steadfast commitment.
“We’re supporting all the sports in the UAAP,” said Sy. “It just so happens that basketball started, so we’re here.”
“NU has a very rich history,” added Sy. “It’s not small. It just didn’t grow. And we intend to put it back as one of the top universities.”
Very predictable plays yesterday that's why they lost. NU is lacking of firepower so they must sacrifice bodies in defense. I know they can beat UP yesterday but NU self destructed from the start of second half.
Big game against UE on Thursday. Good luck NU.![]()
magiging malaki pong tulong ang SM sa pagbuhay ng NU muli.before NU is one of the most respected university pero unti-unti pong nawala.pero right now with the help of SM ay unti-unti pong babangong ang NU.sobrang maraming magagandang plans ang gagawin ngayon sa alma mater namin.like the new NU sport complex 12th story building with olmypic size swimming pool.increase of instructor salary para maraming mapiratang magagaling na profesor pati narin mga students.beautification sa campus.sure employment sa mga alumni at graduate ng NU.at magkakaroon pa po ng program ang SM sa mga student para kumita ng pera while studying kasi pwede silang mag part time sa mga SM mall.lalo na sa mga kapos palad na magaaral ng aming university.

good news para sa NU!
MABUHAY NATIONALS!
although natalo ang men's team, nu should be happy that the lady bulldogs (i hope someone will give them an appopriate monicker for their women's teams) beat la salle in women's basketball...
i heard that their women's volleyball team will try to be competitive...that's piece of good news for volleyball fans...
Hope for better things for NU in the years to come and also they should also keep their baseball team competitve as well, regular final four entrants kasi sila.
salamat po ng marami sa sumusuporta sa NU.kahit kami ang "real underdog sa UAAP"nakakataba ng puso isipin na maraming naniniwala sa NU.

next seasons NU Bulldogs battle cry...
"We've got it all for youuuu..."
hehehe peace![]()
ei NU guys, no offense. honest comment lang. hindi maganda un NU Spirit + NU Attitude = NU Breed.
Kasi un NU could be read as NO. Yeah pilosopo, pero alam nyo naman pag katuwaan. I'm not against NU okie?![]()
the new battle cry:
"We've got it all for N-youuuu..."
But NU can be read as NEW? Right? Sa American English the word NEW is read as "nu".
