Lightbulb MBA to PBA Direct Hires

UNTIL the 2000 season, any MBA player could be signed up immediately as a free agent by the PBA. The rule was discontinued and MBA players wishing to play in the PBA for the first time were required to go through the draft starting in 2001.

Here are a list of those MBA players who managed to avail of the priviledge to go straight to any PBA team that wanted them:

    1999
Robert Duat - Cebu to San Miguel
Teodoro Valera - Batangas to Ginebra

    2000
Wynne Arboleda - Laguna to Pop Cola
Celedon Camaso - Manila to Talk 'N Text
Alex Crisano - Pangasinan to Ginebra
Arthur del Rosario - Socsargen to Shell
Gherome Ejercito - San Juan to Talk 'N Text
Allan Gamboa - Iloilo to Pop Cola
Rudy Hatfield - Laguna to Tanduay
Anthony Helterbrand - Batangas to Ginebra
Donaldo Hontiveros - Cebu to Tanduay
Ronald Magtulis - Iloilo to Ginebra
Dorian Pena - Pasig-Rizal to San Miguel
Dale Singson - Iloilo to Shell
Christopher Tan - Batangas to Santa Lucia
Robert Wainwright - Cebu to Santa Lucia
James Wallkvist - San Juan to Alaska (although he was declared as their direct-hire Fil-foreigner)

Excellent point Anthony. Your post made me recall the PBA rule on MBA players being free agents.

Note that even in 2003, when Romel Adducul joined the PBA draft, he was disallowed to be a candidate for ROY honors having been a certified professional himself from the MBA. The same goes for other ex-MBA players who were disqualified to become ROY of the PBA.

My bad on Wainwright. I thought it was Shell since the Realtors got burned with the Rob Parker issue. Thanks for the heads-up, GP!

The lineup that Anthony presented for 2000 also would explain why the draft for that season was very lean. But if we actually factor in the MBA players for that season, it wasn't really that bad. Most notable players in that list would be 2003 MVP runner-up Rudy Hatfield, national team players JJ Helterbrand and Dondon Hontiveros, San Miguel burly center Dorian Pena, and last season's defensive player of the year Wynne Arboleda. The 2000 draft saw Paolo Mendoza and company all coming from the PBL, decimated already by the influx of its Fil-Fors to the PBA the season before and the transfer of top-flight PBL stars to the MBA.

Other rookies from the earlier years:

    Batch 1976

    Gil Cortez (Toyota, eventual ROY)
    Tito Varela (Crispa)
    Mike Bilbao (Tanduay)
    Freddie Webb (Tanduay)

    Ronnie Albor (Honda)

    Batch 1984

    Willie Pearson (Crispa, eventual ROY)

I'm sure there are a lot of errors in this post as I'm only basing this information through memory. I'm having trouble recalling though who came in 1983 and 1984 - I'm sure there are a lot of familiar names but just couldn't recall them.

One player of note missing from Batch 1980 was Melchor Ravanes of Royal Tru-Orange.

The 1980 Rookie class was one of the largest if not the largest since the 1975 pioneers (who were all rookies technically speaking). Aside from the rich harvest of all the returning teams, the PBA took in two expansion squads that fielded all-rookie rosters -- the Tefilin Polyesters and the Galleon Shippers.

  6. #86
Not sure about Ravanes being part of Batch 1980, Anthony. I think he was part of Batch 1978 or 1979 since I recall him being part of the champion Royal Tru Orange team that beat the Toyota Tamaraws in the 1979 Open Conference. Ravanes' penchant for defense surfaced in this series when he and Leo Paguntalan alternated in trying to stop Robert Jaworski. Of course, the Orangemen won because of imports Larry Pounds and Otto Moore who were allowed to play together against the one-at-a-time pair of Andrew Fields and Bruce King.

I love that Tefilin team. Practically a new roster, they had Ira Terrell as one of their imports (I forgot the other name though). Plus, my favorite amateur player back then, Fernando "Jojo" De Guzman finally got to play in the PBA. I'm still having difficulty recalling though the entire Polyesters lineup though - I've penciled in De Guzman, Manila and Mariano. Would you recall the others?

On the other hand, most of the players of the Galleon Shippers team (or CDCP) mentored by Nic Jorge, came from the defunct Filmanbank team. The Shippers acquired their franchise through the Silverio bank and were able to field the Filmanbank players like Angelito Ladores, Ed Merced, Ben Ocariza, among others. Filmanbank, prior to its disbandment, had star players like Jimmy Mariano, Boy Kutch, Larry Mumar and Jun Papa back in 1978, and teamed up with Big Billy Robinson to place runner-up to Toyota in the AFC.

Speaking of expansion, there were an original nine teams that competed in the PBA. In 1977, it went down to 8 teams with Carrier's disbandment. In 1979, the number went up to 9 once more with the entry of Gilbey's Gin. It became 10 the year after when Tefilin joined and Galleon Shippers purchased the Filmanbank franchise. Hence, aside from the present roster of 10 teams in the PBA today, the record for most number of teams was actually achieved the first time in the 1980 and 1981 seasons, thereby explaining, as succintly put by Anthony, the arrival of several rookie players for season 1980.

Ric Mallari was not part of the team, he played only for Gilbey's.

The PBA career of all the Tefilin players except Mariano and Tierra (and import Norman Black) was limited to the team's two-year existence. Mariano, Tierra and Black managed to land PBA jobs after the team disbanded. Asisstant Coach Bernardino went on to become PBA commissioner.

I could be missing one or two players since there are 11 (not 12) on this list. Perhaps the 12th spot was reserved for the import.

I think the team remained intact for their second and final season in 1981 and did not take in any new players, save for iimport Black.

  14. #94
Great list Anthony...Tefilin's imports, aside from the debuting Norman Black, were Ira Terrell and Larry Pounds. It was Pounds' third visit to Manila, having been part of two champion teams before that - the 1979 Open Conference champions Royal Tru Orange team and the visiting Nicholas Stoodley team of the 1980 Invitationals.

What about Galleon Shippers? My best recollection for this team were Ladores, Ocariza and Merced. They of course had the 6'7 Paul McCracken as their import back then, plus the tallest pair of imports ever to play for one team in PBA history - the two behemoths James Lister and Edmond Lawrence, the former listed at 7'0 and the latter at 6'11. Later, Lister was replaced by another seven footer, Jeff Wilkins...

He will refuse to play for that team? E.g. what if Gerald Francisco negotiated with Alaska, but then got picked by Sta. Lucia, ano i-hohonor ng PBA?
Also IMHO, kung ako ang team with a higher pick, I would make sure that I'll get the best player available or the one that I love the most.
