GMA sees late switch to digital TV
      07 August 2012

GMA Network Inc. official recently said that it would be the last network to adopt to digital television because of the economic situation of the Filipino TV viewers.

“GMA may be late in adopting full digitization due to the economic situation of the Filipino TV viewers. Going digital requires an investment of some sorts,” said Felipe Gozon, chief executive officer of GMA Network.

People of the Philippines....remember the TV networks who are more interested in profit rather than delivering better service to the people,...networks who depicts the scenario that the Filipinos doesnt deserve digital tv. please support networks who sees the future of the country rather than just pure business gains.

malakas ang influence ni mvp ngayon sa gov't., so sana instead of buying and taking control of gma station bakit di na lang niya kalampagin ang ntc/gov't. na ipatupad na ito, pressure them.....tingin ko mas malaki ang posibility na makakapagcompete siya sa abs at gma kung full dtv na ang pilipinas.....

Japan urges PH to speed up digital TV review
    11/23/2012

MANILA - Japanese Ambassador Toshinao Urabe urged the Philippine government Thursday to fast-track its review of the adoption of the Japanese digital TV standard, replacing the analog system in the Philippines.

Urabe pointed out the initial decision to use the Japanese terrestrial digital system was made during the previous administration and the delay in its final adoption is entailing "lost economic opportunity" for those in the industry.

"After the new administration came (in 2010), they were reviewing all the projects. Ever since, it has been under review. I'm quite confident that in the near future, the government will make a decision to adopt it," Urabe said.

The Philippine government set a goal to replace its analogue system with digital broadcast technology by 2015 and studied Japan's Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial, and Europe's Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2.

The National Telecommunications Commission eventually recommended the Japanese system, which awaits final approval from President Benigno Aquino.

Aquino spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in an interview Thursday "some concerns" are still being studied, but he assured there will be a decision before 2015.

Urabe said the Japanese system suits the Philippines best, being an island country and disaster-prone like Japan, since its one-antenna system can even apply to mobile phones.

"What happened at the great eastern Japan earthquake, when people were hit by the earthquake, they were travelling on those trains. And someone got a message (on a mobile phone) that tsunami is coming. So, everyone said, 'Let's get off the train, and they went to a higher place. After that, the tsunami came and the train was destroyed," he said.

Noting the approval of the system by the country's association of broadcasting companies, Urabe said an earlier adoption will eventually usher in "new programs, which will mean more employment, more income, and more tax revenues."

"While people are waiting, a lot of people are already preparing, investing in equipment, and hiring people. And that means cost. So, I think, the earlier, the better," he said.

ABS-CBN spending heavily for digital TV
    16 November 2012

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. said that they have spent almost a billion pesos to go into digital TV.

“We started already last year [on digital TV], [spend] about a billion already in acquiring transmission, library,” said Rolando Valdueza, chief financial officer of ABS-CBN.

“We made initial investment already, we do some test broadcast [comparing analog and digital tv] and part of the investment is acquiring this [equipment] and so were ready to run out. We’re just waiting for the government to issue a standard whether, Japanese or European technology,” he added.

Earlier reports said that the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) endorse to the Palace the adoption of the Japanese standard for the Philippines’ migration to digital terrestrial TV.

Digital television is an innovative transmitting technology that has transformed television-viewing experience. It has enabled broadcasters to offer television with better picture and sound quality. It also offers multiple programming choices.

In April 2011, the NTC ordered all broadcasting companies in the Philippines to shut off their analog signal by December 2015 and switch to digital broadcast.

On March 27, 2011, the local regulator ordered an evaluation of the standard to be used by the Philippines for digital television and is reconsidering the second generation Digital Video Broadcasting from Europe.

But the Philippines will be using the Japanese Terrestrial Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting protocol to facilitate the country’s transition to digital television, rather than the Advanced Television System Committee system implemented by North American broadcasters devised as a replacement for the National Television System Committee system utilized by North America and the Philippines.

NTC chose the Japanese standard because it is cheaper than Europe’s Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial 2 or DVB-T2. The Philippines will be the first in Asia to adopt the Japanese standard for digital TV.

NTC endorses adoption of Japanese digital TV standard
    ABS-CBNnews.com
    Posted at 01/14/2013 6:58 PM | Updated as of 01/14/2013 6:58 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is backing the adoption of the Japanese digital TV standard to replace the analog system in the Philippines by 2015.

Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said the NTC endorsed the adoption of Japan's Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial or ISDB-T standard to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) last December.

Cordoba said the DOST, which is in charge of big projects involving technology, will make the recommendation to Malacanang.

The Philippine government is targeting to replace its analog system with digital broadcast technology by 2015. It has studied Japan's Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial, and Europe's Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2.

Cordoba said the NTC chose the Japanese standard because it is cheaper than the European standard.

The NTC official said another advantage of the Japanese standard is that it can also be used as a early warning mechanism during natural disasters.

Earlier, Kyodo News quoted Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe as saying the Japanese system is suited for the Philippines, since it is an island country and disaster-prone like Japan and its one-antenna system can even apply to mobile phones.

"What happened at the great eastern Japan earthquake, when people were hit by the earthquake, they were travelling on those trains. And someone got a message (on a mobile phone) that tsunami is coming. So, everyone said, 'Let's get off the train, and they went to a higher place. After that, the tsunami came and the train was destroyed," Urabe said.

The Information and Communications Technology Office had also said the Japanese system is better suited for the Philipipnes, since the European model has more complicated modulation techniques.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brokaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and an NTC technical working group had also recommended the adoption of the Japanese system last year.

NTC endorses Japanese digital TV technology for PHL again
    January 14, 2013 6:12pm
    GMANetwork.com

The National Telecommunications Commission has once more endorsed to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) the adoption of the Japanese Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) standard when the Philippines migrates from analog to digital terrestrial television, scheduled for 2015.

According to NTC commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba, the agency has opted for the Japanese standard as it is less expensive than Europe's Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial 2 (DVB-T2) and also has an integrated early warning system for natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons. The European version does not have the early warning technology.

Cordoba also said that the agency already endorsed the Japanese standard to the DOTC in December.

In 2010, the NTC issued an order adopting ISDB-T as the standard, and was set to issue the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for digital TV that year when Malacañang ordered a review.

In 2012, Malacañang commissioned the Information and Communications Technology Office to draft a migration plan to help it decide which standard to use.

The ICTO said the Japanese standard is more appropriate, as its European counterpart has a higher modulation and has more complicated modulation techniques.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brokaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) has also endorsed the adoption of the Japanese standard for the Philippines. — BM, GMA News
