    brownout photo op.

    saya nga rin nung brownout. everyone took out their celfones and turned on their displays. then the cheering
    squads tried to outcheer each other in the middle of all that darkness.

    the only bad thing is that it took place in the middle of a rally and a spike from one of the ust attackers. good
    thing is i think it might have been an out judging from the angle of the ball. but it could have gone either way.

    Asalto para sa MVT at WVT ngayong ika-15 ng Marso, 2008

    Okay. Now it can be told. The Tiger Pack, a UST alumni support group to Thomasian student-athletes, had an asalto for the UST Tiger Spikers, newly crowned champions of the Men's Volleyball Tournament at the UAAP Season 70, and third placer UST Women's Volleyball Team, today at the UST Gym Annex.

    The men's team showed up 100% while there were a few absentees among the ladies, notably Denise Patricia Tan, who at the moment, is still being diagnosed at the UST Hospital for possible dengue or typhoid fever.

    There were more or less 20 members of the Tiger Pack who came, and a few non-Thomasians, notably the number 1 fan of Venus Bernal, and a friend who often cheers with us, although he's not from UST.

    (Pictures of the event might be posted here at this thread anytime soon.)

    The objective of the asalto is three-fold:

    1. For the players of both men's and women's teams to have a reunion of sorts between themselves, and with their fans, including Bernal's fans.
    2. For the Tiger Pack to show firsthand their appreciation of both teams by giving them something (more like many things) to eat, and something to remember the event by.
    3. For them to know us a little bit better since they are already familiar with our faces and for some of us, our names.

    The program's highlights included:

    • the showing of an appreciation audio-visual presentation (AVP) for the MVT, aptly entitled "Amazing", and the showing of the AVP created by the fans of the WVT from Davao;
    • paying of tribute to UST-WVT stalwarts Ging Balse and Venus Bernal -- and Joey Torrijos who couldn't make it to the event -- who saw their last playing year at the UAAP this season; "roasting" of the two MVT graduating players at the UAAP, namely Jerome Say and Glenn Artajos who is already married, according to Coach Emil Lontok.
    • eating, more eating, and more eating (the boys really have their appetites cut out for them -- read: they really eat very well. )
    • awarding of tokens and token certificates
    • photo ops, and more photo ops.

    Some sidelights:

    Angelie Tabaquero apologized to us for their failure to defend the championships. She said that "things happened that way, despite their effort and perseverance."

    Ging and Vhen couldn't hold back their tears -- both were just overwhelmed by the attention given to them by the Tiger Pack, and the public in general. Vhen was paid tribute to by a fan from TUP who helped design a website just for her. The fan said "his life changed because of the example showed by Vhen when playing on the court." Ging, on the other hand, heard the tribute given to her from the emcee -- the text of the tribute was from a fan and a friend who couldn't bear the thought of crying it out with Ging -- so she just gave her piece for the emcee to read.

    The MVT have their nicknames for each other. While each one was being called by the emcee for him to receive his token and certificate of appreciation, the guys at the back were yelling his specific nickname that goes, for example, "Gorilla," "Butiki," or "Paniki," and the like. Interestingly, they have a special for Jan Torres, except that I can't remember it now.

    During the "reply" portion, Mark Dalit responded on behalf of his team, and said that their victory would not have been possible without the Tiger Pack's "heartful" cheering, despite the fact that "our cheering section was outnumbered by FEU." Rookie of the Year Jason Ramos almost broke down in tears and professed that he was overwhelmed by the support the Tiger Pack bestowed on him, despite the fact that he's still on his first year at the university and the UAAP.

    Coach Emil had a mouthful to say about his two graduating wards. (No, I cannot print the "sermon" here, but its gist has something to do with both boys being "pasaways" at one point during their playing years.) Then Coach Emil had a surprising revelation. "In 25 years of my coaching the UST-MVT, this is the first time that a group had actually prepared a celebration for us," he said.

    Our group was very happy with the result of our preparations, in spite of the snags and frustrations we encountered along the way. I, personally, am very happy because I felt we were able to achieve our objective of raising the morale of both teams, especially the women's side. I thought we made our point: regardless what happens to our teams, we'll be there for them; if they need anything from us, we're just here for them, no matter what.

    Going home, I texted a player of our MVT and personally said thank you to him and his team for showing up to the event. He replied, "kami po 'yung dapat magpasalamat. Pauwi na po ako ng Laguna. Salamat po ulit."

    Some readers probably won't understand where our dedication to our players is coming from. This much I can say: "They're not just our players. They are our younger brothers and sisters that we have pledged to support, and protect if need be, despite the odds."

    I'm a Thomasian and I'm proud to be one.

    from the very short period i've come to know the players, both MVT and (especially) the WVT... and the fans of both squads, i can totally understand. especially that i'm a thomasian, too.

    i have gotten a glimpse of the preparation on ust.net i think, or was it ustexchange(?), but then totally forgot about it coz of work. so i didn't have a clue it would finally push through. i'm not sure if it's for select guests only, but for sure there are many more than willing to support this valiant gesture.

    ^sa ust.net.ph po. were not connected anymore with ustexchange. actually, open po ito sa lahat ng thomasian supporters but the thing is, yung iba medyo naaalangan pumunta dahil nahihiya daw sila. anyway, first time pa lang kasi ito kaya siguro ganun. sa mga succeeding event sana magkalakas loob na silang sumama sa amin tutal mga thomasians and thomasian sipporters naman sila.

    btw, why don't you join the tiger pack? mag register ka na at mag-post sa ust.net.ph. na-feature nga pala kami sa varsitarian nung february issue.

    haseq, nice post.

    Congrats and great job haseq for organizing such an event that is most certainly apt for our players.

    Had I known there was an event like this, I would've happily volunteered. Perhaps next time, it would be best if a lot of fans would be informed. I'm sure there's a great number of people out there who would love to personally celebrate with and commend our players for their strong performances this year.

    I hope there would be pictures posted soonest.

    Win some, lose some. So they say.

    I may not be a big fan of the UST-Volleyball teams (as you might see) but i surely can't help but commend the matches they dished out with their foes and for their fans. Congratulations for getting the Crown UST-MVT!. The defense that you showed FEU's MVT on the 3rd Game was extremely tight and was a feat to watch together with the attacks your roster gave.

    Hopefully more people have been exposed to Men's Volleyball this year and it will have more air time in the same vein as it's counterpart, Women's Volleyball and would prompt Studio 23 to cut some of their BLAH shows since this tourney only happens once a year.

    With all these, i hope to see the UST VT's again the next season together with all the other teams and be served matches that are jampacked with Volleyball goodness.

    Peace to all. Peace be all.

    thanks, ichophone.

    i was watching the replay of game 2 of the men's vball final kanina, and i'm really beginning to like the level of play there better than in the distaff side. quality vball talaga. fast action, intelligent plays. these are tailor made for afficionados such as you who can appreciate the finer points of the game.

    thing is, we really haven't seen any game outside of the playoffs and the championship matches. baka din naman boring yung ibang game, but we're not to know kasi nga di naman na-televised. so sana nga, kung di man full coverage, mas maaga sana ma-pickup ng studio 23 ang men's games.

    congrats to all the teams this season 70. you all contributed to making it as popular as it is now.

    Maraming salamat!

    CONGRATULATIONS are in order for those who planned for and organized the event of 15th of March, 2008!

    Thanks to everyone who contributed money, resources, time and effort to make the event successful:

    To the University Administration for lending us the sound system, the LCD projector, and other technical requirements that we need; and especially for providing us with the venue for free;

    To those who prepared and brought the food (special mention are the banana muffins and the deliciously prepared lasagna);

    To those who decorated the place; the emcees; those who serenaded the players; those who served as official photographers;

    To the person who prepared the audio-visual presentation entitled "Amazing", making the MVT members shout -- more like cringe -- after seeing their faces on the screen, and especially how they looked like when they cry;

    To the member who designed the tokens and laid out the certificates;

    To the alumni support group that produced that glorious tarpaulin of the MVT;

    To our dear coaches -- thank you for letting your guard down for a moment, and spent the afternoon with all of us (Coach August, get well soon!)

    And most especially to our dear Tiger Spikers and Lady Tigresses -- this event would not have been possible without your presence. (Ging at Vhen, saludo ang buong Thomasian community sa inyo! Joey Torrijos, maraming salamat sa "kagandahang" ipinakita mo sa loob ng court at sa labas nito. Glenn at Jerome, hindi namin kayo masyadong nakilala sa maikling panahon ng aming pagchi-cheer sa team ninyo. Ganunpaman, salamat sa inyong PUSO na nakapagpabalik sa higanteng koponan ng Far Eastern University Tamaraws sa lupa. Pero Edjet Mabbayad, saludo rin kami sa 'yo! You're still the man! )

    Last but not the least, thank you dear Tiger Pack for always being there for our players. We may not outnumber as yet the other alumni cheering squad of other UAAP schools. But we're slowly getting there. Some of us may not yet realize this. But we're really pushing our players to play their best. As one of our MVT players said, "we couldn't quite know how to say this but we sincerely appreciate the fact that we're appreciated."

    (Sabi ni Ging, "maraming salamat dahil sinama nyo pa rin kami sa tribute na ito kahit hindi kami nanalo." Sabi ni Angge "pasensya na at hindi kami nanalo kahit ginawa na namin ang best namin." Sabi ni Vhen, "maraming maraming salamat talaga.")

    Hindi lang nila alam, dahil sa kanila -- at ngayon kasama na ang aming Men's Volleyball Team -- maraming mga bata, matanda, mga mag-asawa, at kung sinu-sino pa sa buong bansa ang tumututok sa telebisyon para mapanood sila. Hindi lang nila alam na maraming tao ang napapasaya nila makita lamang sila sa telebisyon, lalu na pag nakita sila sa personal (Denise, magpagaling ka na at sabik ka na uling makita ng mga fans mo!)

    Now that UAAP Season 70 is officially over, thank you our dear players for the memories.

    We'll see you at the venue anytime soon.

    And we promise to cheer.

    And cheer some more.

    Im from FEU but my hats off to the UST Mens Volleyball team. Ending FEU's 3peat is a testament to their heart and desire.

    Until next year. Dont let petty incidents affect you. The important thing is you won the title.

    Here's the AVP entitled "AMAZING",
    which was previewed during the asalto for the UST-MVT
    last Saturday.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/gbrewTV

    The team had a great time watching the video,
    and it brought laughter and tears at the same time.

    It was very simple, but beautifully done,
    the emotions very much captured by the songs and the pictures.

    Enjoy!

    Congratulations, again, to the Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers and Tiger Volleybelles for bringing glory and prestige to the university through volleyball. Kudos to the Thomasian supporters and the Tiger Pack for holding a simple token of appreciation for the teams. They have done their best and truly deserve such accolades.

    Viva La Fuerza Tigre!
