This is one book I really love and I don't mind re-reading it. Recently I got hold of the unabridged version and I'm in the process of reading it.

The movie did not fully give justice to the book.

Post away whatever you want to say about this book, the author, famous quotes etc....

    Thanks.

I agree with you that the movie was an upset as compared to the book - I usual case though.

One of the nice points in the book is when the Bishop of Digne told Jean Valjean. ....."You no longer belong to evil, but to good. It is your soul I am buying for you ."

I remember silently crying during the chapter where Fantine had to "sell" her physical beauty in order for her child to live with the Thenardiers. Her beautiful blond hair, her teeth...up till now it gives me a shiver.

I am planning on reading it again.

It's a greatb novel and I never get tired of reading it again and again.

BODACIOUS, you're right. The latest movie adaptation (the one which starred Claire Danes and Liam Neeson) didn't do justice to the novel. However, the old movie was closer to the original.

    I kinda don't like Cosette's character--it's too darn bland!

One question though. Do you think Inspector Javert is a righteous or a self-righteous man?

I think nobody has done more in recent years to popularize Les Miserables the play, the novel, the song I dreamed a dream and Fantine than Susan Boyle. By her wondrous performance, am sure the interest in Les Miserables has spiked up a lot.

lol the unabridged version I have on my shelf is at least 1400+ pages! I actually read the book for a book report back in 2005 (I had no idea mom kept a wonderful book like that 'til that time)

its the paperback edition, with cossette (spelling?) as the cover. Its a very good read, though as a highschooler, I kinda found the battle of napoleon to be a tiresome read, but i still read it anyways. though the ending of that napoleon chapter had me googling for truth. i think it was stated in the last pages of the napoleon chapter that napoleon lost because his back up didn't arrive and wellington (i think...) won because his arrived.

all in all, number 1 in my books lists. it really covers the lives of the poor and those deprived of justice and respect. if only i could find my 100 point book report file on this, i'd gladly upload it so that you guys could see (yep, i scored 100. i love this book that much!)

Yes, agree! If you don't like that your "Les Miserables" reading experience be ruined then don't watch the film.

Oh yeah, that was one of the highlights on Fantine's chapter. I hate the Thenardiers back then (and until now). And yes, when she sold her hair, her teeth, my god...

I am just glad that I'm able to read this extra-ordinary book. It's a long read not to mention a 8-pt font-size is such a pain, but heck, the story is good and it's worth your time. I was able to influenced my little sister to pick-up the book and read it when she got free time and she did and got excited as I am after she finished reading it...

This is the kind of the book that I won't get tired reading over and over again...

I read this back in second year high school, uh, 2 years ago, to be exact. And since then Les Miserables has become one of my favorite books. It made me cry a lot of times, and I could really feel the characters. Jean Valjean is the best. Oh, and poor Cosette! Like you guys, I plan to re-read this again soon.

My copy is also the complete and unabridged paperback edition; 1463 pages.

Bought in 1992 and read in a week. It was one of the best books I've read. But it was kinda draining. Not because of how long the book is, but because of its subject and the emotions that one feels in empathizing with the different characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. Much like the same feelings I've had after reading John Steinbeck's The Grapes Of Wrath.

The Les Miserables movie with Liam Neeson as Jean Valjean was a failure. Cramming an epic novel in less than 2 hours would surely do the masterpiece an injustice.

The miniseries in the 80s and French version gave more justice to the book. But then these are miniseries.

So how could someone do a few hours of Les Miserables but still be faithful to the essence of the book?

I think Claude Michel Schonberg, Alain Boublil and Cameron Mackintosh succeeded in their 3 hour musical masterpiece.

For people who don't have the patience of reading a 1,463-paged novel, or watching 8-12 hours of a mini series, the musical Les Miserables is the best alternative. And this is a sung-through musical.

With its soaring and symphonic music, the emotional and moving lyrics, Les Miserables the Musical was a success from the very start.

Can't wait to see the film adaptation of this musical with Hugh Jackman as Valjean and Anne Hathaway as Fantine.
