CSB seizes quarterfinals slot at JRU’s expense

MANILA, Philippines—College of St. Benilde beat Jose Rizal University, 67-63, Wednesday for the last quarterfinals slot in Group B in the 2012 FilOil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan.

Carlo Lastimosa scattered 13 points, eight assists and four steals for the Blazers, who are finally showing signs of improvement.

CSB managed to win despite committing 29 turnovers, which JRU translated to 29 points.

Fortunately for St. Benilde, it had a good shooting night while on the other hand JRU went for 35% from the field and missed 11 of its 21 free-throw attempts.

Philip Mabulac came through with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting for the Heavy Bombers, who ended their campaign with a 3-5 record.

St. Benilde did a good job limiting knockdown shooter Nate Matute to just six points on two-of-10 shooting.

    Benilde captures quartefinal berth
    by Mike Abasolo

The College of St. Benilde Blazers ended their summer preparations for NCAA Season 88 on a high note by defeating the JRU Heavy Bombers, 67-63, with a 4-4 card to qualify for a quarterfinals berth in the FilOil Flying V Preseason tournament.

“We are not used to this kind of situation, we thought we were going to take an early vacation”, according to a surprised Blazers Head Coach Richard Del Rosario in a phone conversation with Inboundpass.

After trailing by 3 in the 1st quarter, Jan Tan, Ralph Deles, Jonathan Grey, Luis Cinco and Joel Tolentino collaborated for 23 points including a 6-0 run with a minute to go in the 1st half to take an 11-point margin, 40-29.

Philip Mabulac scored 7 of his game total 15 points in the 3rd quarter stay within 10-points of the Blazers, 50-40 at the 2:56 minute mark but the Heavy Bombers made a run for it as back to back baskets from Stephen Villarias and Nat Lopez made it a 3-point game, 65-62 with 31 seconds left to play.

The Blazers were able to hang tough with Tolentino and Carlo Lastimosa combining for 2 of 4 clutch Free Throws at the stretch.

After garnering the 4th and final spot in Group B, CSB is poised to encounter the NCAA Defending Champions, the San Beda Red Lions in the next round, “It’s a good thing to face them early, so my players won’t feel surprised when we meet them again this season”, added Coach Del Rosario.

Lastimosa had 13-points and 8 assists while Grey had 12-points for CSB.

    CSB 67 – Lastimosa 13, Grey 12, Tan 8, Tolentino 7, Romero 6, Sinco 5, Bartolo 4, Maconocido 4, Deles 2, Garcia 2

    JRU 63 – Mabulac 15, Lopez 12, Almario 8, Monserat 7, Matute 6, Dela Paz 5, Maconocido 5, Mendoza 3, Villarias 2

Looks like Lastimosa is now showing signs of maturity. I do hope this translates to a good showing this NCAA season. Goodluck Blazers!!!

It is a good sign that he doesn't have to do all the scoring chores and the other players have shown that they can step up if one or more fail to deliver. Sharing the ball never looked this good for the Blazers before so Carlo has to add assists to his stats for him to be a great player!

But they should really limit their turnovers (as shown in their games against JRU, LPU and against Adamson). It's like they traded it for better rebounding and shooting percentage. The Red Lions can easily pounce on that weakness so they have to keep it close and keep looking for the open man! Compensating it with scoring is just a short remedy so they must go back to defense faster in order to avoid opponents converting them to points.

^^for the past 2 years already, CSB plays SBC very well. in fact last year, we had a game where we just came up short (carlo lastimosa's last shot didn't go in). carlo cried in that game and was greatly consoled by coach RDR.. hopefully this year (not only in the filoil) we can get over that SBC hump that has hounded us for several years already.. i think we last beat them in 2003 where we had our last best season although we didnt make it to the final 4..

With Julius Armon gone from their fold, we don't exactly know if our chances can improve slightly, or if we can even get close to them. Their system is still intact and their rotation is far superior. Guess we will just have to wait for the their match to happen and see where the Blazers have improved or needs to improve before the NCAA season begins!

Why ? Where did Julius Armon go ?

Refer to the SBC Turf Thread here for more details. The Blazers might get lucky, if they play smart and execute their offense as Coach RDR instructed them to do, they can keep the game close and avoid those costly turnovers to keep them at striking distance.

Lest you want to feel the ire of Bedan pexers here, the politically-correct term is foreign student-athlete, not import!

San Beda's grassroots program has been their asset since the time of Maestro Badolato in the Red Cubs program. And most of them have stayed with them until college so they basically have the edge in familiarity in their system whereas our players need to gel and be cohesive enough to nullify that this season. It begs the question if they can still take it up a notch.

In terms of manpower, I give the edge to the Red Lions. And the only way that we can even the odds is by seeing at least 4 Blazers doing enough damage in shooting percentage to make the Red Lions think twice about doing their half-court traps and them resorting to zones. If Grey or Lastimosa can find a way to slash through them plus Bartolo on rebounding duties, we may be able to keep it close if the other shooters fail consistently. Ball-handling is a key factor in their match-up as their turnovers would cost them a chance to keep the game within reach. They have 4 days to think about their gameplan.

On a serious note, it is a distraction that's worth looking into before the season begins. And if they can come back in the Final Four, I'll be happy to buy them a bottle for their efforts. But they have to work for it.

  13. #3573

they placed 8th last year with 6-12 win-loss kung kaya nilang maka 10 wins mataas ang chance na pasok sila sa f4

  14. #3574
Gauging their performance in the Fil-Oil is just one of many factors that could make or break them as a team. It may also lead us to higher expectations which can be good or bad depending on what they can do when the season begins. In modest terms, I see what used to be a 45% team become a 65% team ready to knock at the top 4 again.

I'm also worried that a Blazer might be injured before the NCAA season starts so I hope they don't strain themselves and just follow Coach Richard's gameplan by experimenting on offensive patterns, rebounding harder, and jumping back to defense as best as they can.

And maybe turnovers were just a by-product of their devil-may-care attitude in winning or losing in this tourney. And maybe this same attitude worked to their advantage in the end when they entered the quarterfinals? I hope they realized that other teams will notice them either way.

We may have to re-analyze their losses against the Generals, Stags, Bulldogs, and Tamaraws. They were considerably close and fighting as far as Coach Richard is concerned. He wanted to see if what he taught them was applied and didn't care much about the results, just how his players played.

And then look at what they did right with their wins against the Falcons, Pirates, Bombers, and that fight-marred victory against the Chiefs. Was it because Coach Richard gave them the go signal to shoot besides implementing the fundamentals? Or that he gave them opportunities to regain their confidence and trust in their abilities to score despite those turnovers?

What is obviously seen are the improvements in firepower and rebounding stats with the inclusion of Bartolo plus Tolentino, and Romero back in the line-up. Scoring chores are spread among the players so anybody besides Carlo can contribute plus we can defend the paint better. Confidence and Consistency are their keys to victory.

So if they can get past SBC, then maybe, they can really defy the odds this year and pull more surprises! And I may have to surprise myself with a drink after June 6, win or lose.

  16. #3576
Two players ang nawala sa line-up (McCoy and somebody I forgot) and we added transferees and Team B standouts. I don't think we are the darkhorse team this year. It's too early to tell.

We are the REDHORSE Team this year! Beer-Pong anyone?

  17. #3577

I mean if team a or team b.

I'm not sure about Lance Sikat (saan ba yan galing?), pero I think Mike Pate and RJ Argamino are in Team B (Romancon) and they played in the CDL-Sandugo.

And it looks like the Green Archers are steady at 3rd place in Bracket A as they face the Stags in the quarterfinals. Kaka-panalo lang nila in OT against arch-rival Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Medyo blow-out victory nanaman ang San Beda kanina against Letran so the Blazers will really have to step up in their June 6 encounter. Nandun pa si Ola Adeogun so dun natin malalaman kung kaya ng CSB makipag-sabayan sa running game ng RL and I do hope they can muster enough firepower to keep it close!

I'll have to get back to you on the CDL results. Even the Lady Blazers failed to make it to the finals sa CDL Women's basketball edition but at least lumalaban pa rin sila.

The Blazers are lucky that they were not in the FilOil's version of the "Group of Death" sa bracket system. And I don't think facing our sister school won't help our cause either, baka maagang inuman lang tayo at patawa nanaman si Coach RDR.
