Benilde sparks run to beat Adamson, 71-66

MANILA, Philippines – The CSB Blazers closed the game on a 10-0 blitz to score a come-from-behind victory over the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 71-66, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Cup at The Arena in San Juan today.

Robert Bartolo, Carlo Lastimosa and Paolo Taha all came up huge at clutch, with Bartolo scoring the go-ahead basket with 40.9 seconds left in the game.

Lastimosa then sealed the win for Benilde with four straight free throws following two missed attempts by the Falcons.

"The players showed maturity by making big shots," Benilde coach Richard del Rosario said. "We have more (scoring) options this year, not just Carlo (Lastimosa).”

Sophomore big man Robert Bartolo led the Blazers with 17 points and nine rebounds, holding his own against Adamson's prized big man Eric Camson.

Lastimosa, for his part, had an all-around performance with 16 points, seven boards and six dimes while Paolo Taha added 12 markers for Benilde.

Camson finished with 23 points and eight rebounds to pace the Falcons, who missed the services o coach Leo Austria.

I have certainly heard that line from RDR last year! On a brighter note, Im just glad we snatched another W, and with Bartolo stepping up big against a veteran like Camson (though he could have did better on the defensive end, I'm not complaining). Taha was again solid on both ends, and while we've seen flashes of Carlo like that before, consistency is the key! Wag lang babalik ang ballhog moments niya.

    Go Benilde!

Btw, Team Romancon made the Sandugo CDL Semis, finishing in the 3rd spot. They played 2-seed Informatics (who holds twice to beat advantage) earlier today, who knows the results of that game?

  5. #3545
Wow, Blazers beating UAAP powerhouse Adamson?!!? Bartolo is really showing the moves. Good pick for you guys.

  6. #3546
Bartolo showed hoops in this game! And Coach RDR is relishing in this rare come-from-behind victory! A win is a win! Hope they avoid the Fil-Oil cellar by winning more games!

I was a very very proud Benildean yesterday. Ang galing ng team, Taha sparked the run and Carlo sealed the deal. :bd

Kaso Tolentino threw another wide open three kaso airball nanaman.

It's a good thing Paolo Taha showed up in this game, he seems to be inconsistent lately despite the ample support in offense through Lastimosa, Romero, Tan, and Bartolo.

And Tolentino seems to share that same inconsistency with Paolo at times when the Blazers need that extra firepower if Lastimosa is heavily guarded. I wouldn't rely on JT alone to lift this team much like we relied on Carlo before. If they play well as a team then they're bound to creep closer or make an upset that will make Coach RDR smile and laugh all the way to AKTV.

    FilOil2012: Blazers smash Pirates

    by Mike Abasolo of inboundpass.com

The College of St. Benilde Blazers defeated the Lyceum Pirates, 78-71 for their 3rd win in 7 outings in the 2nd game of the FilOil Flying V Preseason tournament on May 26, 2012.

The Blazers took an early 11-point lead with a 6-0 run at the 5:15 minute mark then the pirates closed in by 4-points, 20-16 with less than two minutes left in the 1st quarter.

Joel Tolentino’s 5-points in the 2nd quarter extended CSB’s lead to 13-points, 39-26, to finish the 1st half.

The Pirates were able to break the double-digit barrier with a 5-0 run from Shane Ko and Floricel Guevarra to cut the lead to within 8-points, 48-40 with 6:07 remaining in the 3rd quarter but the Blazers were able to hover at a manageable 12-points margin with Jan Tan scoring 6 points, all in the 4th period, to put them in a comfortable 64-51 lead at the 7:55 minute mark.

Lyceum tried to make a comeback with a 7-0 run with less than 5 minutes remaining but Carlo Lastimosa and Mark Romero, who led CSB with18-points, anchored the Blazers offense in the final 2 minutes of regulation. Lastimosa was the 2nd leading scorer for CSB in this game with 16-points and 6 rebounds.

Ko had 19-points and 7 assists for Lyceum followed by 18-points from Guevarra and Cayabyab with 12-points.

The Blazers out-rebounded Lyceum, 50-39 and had more assists, 22-11. CSB have a 3-4 slate in Group B while Lyceum are in the cellar with 1-7.

    CSB – 78 Romero 18, Lastimosa 16, Sinco 15, Tan 6, Bartolo 6, Tolentino 6, Grey 3, Deles 3, Ongtengco 2, Carlos, Taha 1

Hmmm, looks like they've adjusted to their respective roles and responded well in winning this game! Hopefully they can continue to improve in scoring and rebounding! It also helps that their last encounter last season with LPU was controversial to say the least! Revenge is sweet!

Glad to see Mark Romero as the top scorer. Buti nalang talaga bumalik siya.

  11. #3551
They will have to prove their worth in their last game, and probably a last chance to crack at a semis slot. Against the JRU Bombers, they may need to work again as a team, spread the floor, share the ball, and grab those vital rebounds that they missed for so many seasons. Bartolo is our stabilizer in the middle and I hope he sustains that intensity. Romero, Lastimosa, Taha, Tan, and Tolentino will have their work cut out for them.

No use crying over spilled milk bro, this pre-season tourney aims to develop their mental toughness and it paid dividends for them right now. It's a rare back-to-back win for this team that used to rely on one or two scorers to keep us close but no cigar frequently. Now we're seeing more firepower and stability in the paint and they are making progress in fundamentals. If only their freethrow shooting was developing as well.

Technically they have a chance against JRU since they both share identical 3-4 standings so it's a do-or-die moment. They must familiarize themselves of the pressure and intensity that they should prepare for. You should watch that post-game interview of Coach RDR in the inboundpass website where I got the write-up! Coach knows the Blazers have to get over the "pressure" defense of the Bombers and the mindset is to mimic a possible NCAA scenario for a semis slot. And the players responded well in this game so we will just have to keep our fingers crossed that they can go the distance. Best of luck to the Blazers on wednesday!

  15. #3555
The Blazers are heading into quarterfinals.

  16. #3556
^^we still need to win vs JRU to make this a reality. once we win, we'll need to get past SBC who is sporting an 8-0 record in group a.

Blazers finally got back at their tormentors in the Pirates. Revenge tastes sweet, though we are only in the pre-tourneys. As this is one of the best starts the Blazers has had in years, I hope this translates into the NCAA Season as well.

We play JRU for our last game today, with a chance to finish .500 in years. Plus a quarter's slot to boot.

  18. #3558
nanalo na pala tayo vs JRU 67-63! =)

  19. #3559
Just after I posted the message, news came that the Blazers beat the JRU Bombers, 67-63. We finished the elims 4-4 and locked a quarterfinals slot!

  20. #3560
Great news indeed! I think they're on a roll and they feel the need to make a statement to the rest of the teams that they can go the distance with this victory!

Ewan ko lang kung makakalusot pa sila sa SBC, but I'm really happy for them that they are working hard to win games in this tourney! Best of luck to them again!
