At Auto/Automatic mode, there will be certain scenarios and situations where a P&S will be easier to use but there are way more conditions where a dSLR will come out on top. Usually this is when the f3.5 aperture limitation of the dSLR kit lens comes in VS the f2.8 aperture of most P&S cameras.
It is however, not impossible to compensate for this. There are ways and settings to be able to take good photos in the said situations. You simply have to experiment with the camera and know which settings to change. If you don't have the time and effort to do so, sana hindi ka nalang nag SLR in the first place.
I have been using a dSLR (450D) and a very good P&S (S90) side by side. Even in the most perfect lighting condition, hindi pa rin parehas ang quality.
Common sense lang naman ito eh. If P&S cameras are as good or better than entry-level dSLR's, why are camera manufacturers still producing them? Hindi lang Canon at Nikon; even Pentax, Sony and Olympus have entry-level dSLRs.
Do you think these manufacturers will make products if they don't think people will buy them?

If you want more opinion and if you want to know if the person above makes sense or not, magpost ka dito:
