-- Elliot Carver, as portrayed by actor Jonathan Pryce in the 1997 Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies".
in the 1997 Bond film, "Tomorrow Never Dies", British secret agent James Bond faced a different kind of villain. the villain was Elliot Carver, an international media baron who frequently uses his influence to gain an advantage for his firm or wreak havoc on opponents.
for instance, Elliot Carver threatened to release scandalous photos of the President of the United States with a Chicago cheerleader if a bill lowering cable rates was not signed, and then ordered them to be released anyway. another case was when a British beef baron lost a bet to Carver and refused to pay up (on the grounds that the bet was rigged), Carver got revenge by releasing stories on "Mad Cow Disease".
fictional to some but there seems to be a parallelism between the character of Elliot Carver and the Lopez family, the owners of local media conglomerate ABS-CBN. aside from protecting their business and political interests, ABS-CBN was also infamously used by the Lopezes to smear against their opponents, namely Joseph Estrada, Fernando Poe, Jr. and Panfilo Lacson. the Lopezes also used ABS-CBN to "condition" people's minds apparently about the incapacity and corruption of President Gloria Arroyo and her regime by clandestinely supporting the failed November 29 putsch in Makati and providing "blow-by-blow coverage" of the said failed coup on ABS-CBN.
now, with government officials closing in on their involvement with the Magdalo group and the failed November 29 putsch and the apparent failure of ABS-CBN to redeem lost glory against rival GMA Network, the Lopezes again resorted to their tried and tested formula: using their influence by wagging the dog and diverting people's attention from the current issue to this "scandal" involving allegedly tampered studies done by private research firm AGB-Nielsen and the alleged "cheating" done by GMA Network in order to gain the lead in the ratings game.
the parallelism between the character of Bond villain and Elliot Carver and the Lopez family of ABS-CBN is starting to get really obvious. the Filipino people should be warned and, if possible, take the Lopezes and their media conglomerate and other business interests out of the equation.
