Do you know that Ateneo de Davao offers SAP training to their Accountancy students. Apparently, they had tie-up with SAP who conducted training for their teachers at very affordable rates, and require very little additional costs for the students.

Do you know of other schools with this kind of tie-up?

You can e-mail me once in a while and let us have a long discourse on accounting & finance topics and teaching skills. Good luck. Will see if I can go to the ATC next April. Am planning to do a land trip from our Davao office to Cagayan de Oro, and ask a friend to host my stay at Camiguin for a couple of days. (It's payback time for my friendly relationships, hahaha). I really go to the ATC more for interacting with accounting teachers than listening to the speakers, it is really a good way of having a reality check, specially (1) on how well I come across to my CPAR reviewees who have given feedback to their undergrad teachers, (2) on how my previous reviewees are doing as new accouting teachers, (3) in identifying early on potential high flyers in the academe and (4) giving feedback to teachers of my reviewees who either did well or had difficulty in the CPA review. So far I have identified quite a number of young teachers with great potentials and have exchanges of views with them thru e-mail and exchange of instructional materials.

After following your discussion in the CPA review thread, I have observed your remarkable development from being a struggling reviewee to being a dedicated teacher. And I must say that your participation in the CPA review thread discussion has helped you a lot. Keep it up.

Again good luck and God Bless.
    Hello Sir Larru,

It's a privilege to have attended one of your lectures in Cebu, kaso wala pa akong alam noon sa MAS. Unfortunately, until now, konte pa lang talaga ang alam ko sa subject. Before going to my class, I make sure I have studied the topics well. How I wish there will come a time na di ko na kailangan mag-aral before going to my class, na everything that will be coming out from my mouth will be instantaneous flow of skills and knowledge.
It's true that my participation in the thread did helped me..a lot. Na-challenged ako sa mga posts ng ibang reviewees. "fmontserat" is a great person in the thread. Ang dami niyang na-post na napakinabangan ko. Sa thread ko rin nalaman na idol ka pala ng mga reviewees sa Manila. "GOD of MAS" ka sabi nila, which didn't surprised me.

Di na ako na-surprise Sir. Eh dito pa lang sa Cebu, ang tindi ng pangalan mo when it comes to MAS.hehe

Hello po. Im a teacher in one of the universities here in Cebu. First year of implementation din yung BSBA sa school. Kaso po, yung BSBA major in FM namin, may subjects sila sa 3rd year (Financial Management) na wala pang syllabus. Kailangan po namin ng syllabus for that subject. If you don't mind po, and kong meron kayo, pasilip ng kopya .

Ok, will help you on this one. For free (hahaha). Paz, just send me the requested CHED provided syllabus. I have a copy of an unnumbered CHED memo, am not sure if that is the one we are referring to, pa-fax na lang sa office ng copy mo. Then will try to help. Need to go back to AIM after office to get some valuable FM materials.

    ACPAE Update,

Definitely, the next Accounting Teachers Conference will be held in Cagayan de Oro, after the BIR tax deadline, April 17-19. As a director of ACPAE, I attended the board's meeting which was held in the review center on the 2nd floor of Conanan Book Store along Recto Avenue.

So updates, updates... PRTC, RESA, CRC-ACE, & IPRSD have all contributed their share in giving PAS seminars to teachers. The deal was, participants pay P400 per day for the seminar. P200 goes for the food, two snacks & a lunch. P100 goes to ACPAE and the remaining P100 goes to the review center. The review center is responsibile for providing the facilities, the trainor and the seminar materials. In exchange, the review center can also stuff the seminar materials with their own promotional materials which the participants can disseminate to their graduating students.

    Questions:

Is this a fair deal? I think it is a bargain as far as the participants are concerned. Imagine paying more for your travel costs than for the cost of the seminar if you come from outside NCR.

Is this fair to the review centers? If they are using the activity to "promote" their review center, then the promotion cost seems minimal for as long as the number of participants are also "minimal."

Is this fair to the reviewer/trainor? If the review center won't pay for his time and effort, then that depends, if he is doing this for PR purposes at ACPAE because he is eyeing for a "productive" relationship in the accoutancy education sector, then maybe he can consider this as his investment.

Is this set-up sustainable? I don't think so, because when it get's popular, and more teachers start attending, then the review centers might incur higher "promotion" costs and carry the burden of training & developing accountancy teachers.

"Volunteerism" in this way, has a very short runway, it is not sustainable. The only reason while this can be done this year, is because most Manila-based reviewers are becoming active in ACPAE and they are represented in the ACPAE board, they also need ACPAE to make their presence felt.

One review center that has not done its share of "volunteering" and getting paid P100 per participant is CPAR. I have partly discussed this issue with Atty. Valix and I told him that it's ok for me to conduct the training, provided he pays me my "regular' rate. Since I am not the owner of CPAR and the "promotional" benefits will not directly return to me. Atty. Valix seems to be amenable for allowing the use of CPAR facilities for free, but to shoulder the other costs, hhhmmm...doesn't make sense to him.

I don't believe in subsidizing education, much less the training & development of school teachers. My guiding principle has always been "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys." Professionalizing education doesn't mean volunteering your time and effort for free. Training has its costs and school administrators must realize this and start paying good money for good training. Professionalizing means getting into the business of accountancy education and paying for the full price of getting the teachers ready to provide quality education.

People have different motives for doing certain things. Getting awards in professional organizations in exchange for volunteer work is not my cup of tea. I will leave it to those who have a lot of time in their hands to spend "volunteering" their time for PICPA's social activities.

Being a male breadwinner with a family to feed and kids to send to school to is hard to align to providing "quality" service for free. I might end up teaching in a good school who can't afford to send his kids to a good school himself. Such is the irony of life, such is the situation we might all end up in.

Blessed are the childless, and spouse-less, for they have all the time to spend their time for PICPA's vounteer works in the name of professional development.

I suggest you work first for at least two years, take MBA units, then they will allow you to teach part-time. It is even better to start teaching in schools with low passing percentage, because they will even allow you to teach higher accounting subjects even without experience & without MBA units. Puede mong gawing guinea pig ang students nila, the students wouldn't even mind, because you might be better than their more senior teachers. If you go to the better schools, chances are they will ask you to teach basic accounting to non-accounting students. Besides don't teach full-time agad, you might realize it's not your cup of tea and the pay may not be enough to let you live a decent life. Or you can offer your services as a part-time teaching assistant who prepares teaching materials for the faculty.

Yesterday, I attended the book launching for "Intermediate Accounting - Applying International Financial Reporting Standards Philippine edition" authored by Carlos Alindada, Ester "Irog" Ledesma & Maricon Lupisan at the Abacus Room (15/F) of SGV Building. Some SGV partners showed up for the event, some invited educators showed up including CPAR's Atty. Valix & Thomas Siy, RESA's Aljon Lee & Bong Tamayo, educators from UP-Visayas, St. Paul University, TIP, DLSU-Dasmarinas.

The textbook was published by Wiley and distributed by Mind Movers. According to Irog, instructor's resources will be provided only to schools who will prescribe the textbook and buy at least 100 copies of the said book. Meaning, if you happens to be a small school with less than 100 students in Financial Accounting, you can prescribe the book you will not be given instructor's resources. BTW, schools will be given 10% if they buy in bulk. The book costs around P800, not bad for a Hongkong-printed good quality paper textbook. I must say mura na talaga siya.

I got a free copy of the book, not because the authors gave out complimentary copies but because Atty. Valix paid for my copy when he found out I am not willing to shell out the P700 discounted price.

My next move, find out the schools that have adopted the textbook and arrange for an exchange deal for the instructor's resources of this book with what I have in my "soft" library of instructor's resources. Any takers?
