Yeah, the PhP 500 monthly fee caught my attention. Besides, my workplace is very much near the Gym.

OT: Compared to FF and Gold's, Eclipse is more affordable. That doesn't change the fact, though, that PhP 1,700 is still PhP1,700, especially for someone who doesn't earn that much.

Zest Power Gym is a non-profit gym with no frills like air-conditioning, hi-tech aerobic equipment, hot showers, etc. So if anyone is looking for these amenities, then Zest wouldn't be the choice. You’ll need to go elsewhere. This keeps the membership costs down. Although there is no air- conditioning, we have lots of fresh air and trees just outside the gym. This way, the costs of maintaining the gym stays low, and we can keep the monthly dues low. We started in 1990 at P400/month. Only this year, we increased to P500/month because P400 could no longer cover our costs. So we are basically just breaking even on the average. We will NOT increase the price even if members are willing to pay more, simply because we are not after making a profit. Who knows, maybe in 2015, we’ll increase to P600/month if needed. It’s like a private club where members chip in to cover costs

Zest is simply a place to get results. We have been asked to put up branches in other areas, have partnerships, etc. But since Zest is just a hobby, we prefer not to branch out.

We also don’t kiss ***, so if anyone is looking for pampering, we’d be the wrong choice too.

The family or barkada feeling is the prevailing atmosphere here. Believe it or not, the members actually volunteer to re-paint Zest, add equipment, do repairs, and many other small things. No member is obligated by Zest management to do these. I tell them there is no need for them to spend to fix-up the gym but they just really want to. There is just a genuine concern by the members for Zest.

A lot of our students have been developed and eventually got employed in the classier gyms like Golds, Eclipse, Clark Hatch, Pinnacle, The Spa, etc. But they do not forget where they came from.

Zest has made a niche in making people big and strong, or simply just strong for those who stay in lower weight classes.

And finally, let the unmatched results of Zest speak for themselves:
    - 19 official current World (1) & Asian (18) records
    - More Philippine Open records than all the hundreds of gyms in the Philippines combined, despite a membership base of less then 50 people
    - 40 Asian Open gold medals
    - 11 Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) awards out of the all-time 13 given to Filipino powerlifters
    - The 3 pound-for-pound Strongest Women in the Philippines of all time.
    - The 3 Strongest Men in the Philippines of all time

Wanna see a Filipina bench 250 pounds? We’ve got 2 of them.
Wanna see a Filipino squat 600 pounds? We’ve got 5 of them
Wanna see 400 pound benchers? We’ve got 10 of them.

These are but a small portion of our achievements. More details can be seen in our website.

The programs are made by me, Mon Debuque, or Allan Paje (all RP team coaches). But we have hired someone to be the gym man to help implement our programs.

We have programs for beginners, elite, and in-between. A general program is made for beginners. As you progress, we will individually tailor the program for you

We close at 9PM on Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, we close at 12noon. But when Zest has no one about 1 hour before closing time, the gym gets closed since 1 hour is usually not long enough for training if you consider warm-up time too.

The gym does stay open after 9PM on weekdays if we are, err, having some "drinks".

    Good one!

I'm quite curious about this gym. I'll check it out before the end of the month.

Here are examples of what we have produced:

    WOMEN”
A 97-pound girl squatting 264 pounds (that’s almost triple bodyweight). She’s not “muscular” like what some of you may think:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zT2injkRr5g

How about a 127 pound girl benching 209 pounds (how many guys with similar bodyweight can even bench this?). She’s not huge either:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbLm_xgTZqk

Here’s a 52 year-old lady, weighing only 107 pounds, deadlifting 288 pounds. She has slowly shed off close to 15% of bodyweight by reducing bodyfat:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIqCQEp5K9w

Here’s a girl who has reduced her bodyweight by 20% and still made the best lifts of her life at that bodyweight. At a mere 110 pounds, see her 314 pound squat:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR-niqaaDmw

Wanna see a World Record squat? Here’s our girl with a squat of 476 pounds, a new World Masters record. This was done in this year’s Asian Championships. She’s in the heavier weight class:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZACB4bRB6s

    MEN:
How about a 59-yr old man, at only 132 pounds, benching 233 pounds:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBFu-AJA00I

And a 48 yr old man, weighing just 118 pounds, deadlifting 407 pounds. He just successfully deadlifted 446 pounds in an international competition last week:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNSExswFrlg

Here’s our 17-yr old boy squatting 430 pounds. He has gained over 30 pounds of muscle since he started:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1WvfEp6mDM

Here’s one of our medium-sized guys, currently in China as coach of the Philippine Special Olympics powerlifting team, benching 418 pounds:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzup1j-BKHE

We’ve got big guys too. See this 661 pound squat by our heavyweight:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns0HaewB_tY

Ever seen any Filipino bench 200 kg (441 pounds)? Here's one example from among 5 Zest lifters who have done it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWGf8TIhIFg&NR=1

All these were done without the use of steroids. We have a challenge for anyone to drug-test any of our lifters, as long as the challengers pay for the drug test. The drug test must conform to the correct procedures to prevent contamination & swapping of samples.

What we try to do in Zest is to make our trainees get as close as possible to their genetic potential.

There are several ways to get strong. And we do do several methods to keep having variety here but I can't spill all our secrets out here in the open. But to get your bench strong, you'll need to get all the muscles involved strong (this sounds obvious but a lot of people don't really do this). Get your chest, triceps, shoulders, foreams and back strong and your bench will go up. We give a balanced volume to get these muscles stronger (more is not always better)

The techniques are hard to teach online but will be easier to learn if done in Zest. I have noticed that those i have trained "via email" do not improve as well as those who actually train in Zest because we are able to correct & push the trainees here.

    Here's an example:
A new trainee joined us 3 months ago. He had been lifting for 18 years and was stuck. He came to us to break his plateau. After the 3-month training, we decided to test his bench press max. Sure enough, his max had jumped to 135 kg. He failed at 137.5 kg but we saw he was executing it poorly. After correcting him, he benched, believe or not, 155 kg on the same day. He couldn't believe it either. If he were being trained by email, then we wouldn't know what he was doing wrong.

Kasi kung magte-train ako dun e palagi sa gabi, after work.

Most of our lifters walk on those roads everyday, even our women, foreigners, and small lifters but have had no incidents, even at night.

I walk to that area myself because there is a store that sells lugaw with gizzard, liver, etc.

If you're still worried, you can take a tricycle ride from the front of Magsaysay high school, rathern than taking the walk behind the school (fire station area). The front of Magsaysay HS is the next road after the one you are worried about.
