Is P40,000 basic salary for a managerial position (not branch-ops) in a local bank a good package?

The key in banks is being in the right group/department. Not all groups are the same and some have higher bonus upside than others.

You might realize that sometimes being in the right group is more important than being in a better bank.

If you want to be a star, you should be in a position to be bringing in major revenues for your company. Sa bank kung gusto mong maging bigshot, try mo treasury or investment banking. If you're really a BSD (an 80s Wall Street term - look it up!), you will be making millions in bonuses a year.

Of course the pressure is tremendous, and only the best gets in, but it's worth it!

Pwede rin siguro, pero remember you should be in the middle of the action. Dapat revenue driver ka. Madali kasing mag-justify ng promotion and bonus kapag kitang-kita yung monetary contributions mo.

In terms of teaching you the skills to do your first assignments, UP's MS Finance would be a good fit. Just make sure you max out your electives on investment banking-related subjects like advanced corporate finance, business law, and taxation.

If it were me deciding for myself, however, I would simply apply for investment banking / corporate finance jobs directly among the various investment houses and do self-study on corporate finance. For graduate studies, I'd go to law school part-time (I think Arellano is one of the few schools that offer part-time law degrees). Over the long-term, corporate finance skills will be one of the least of your concerns in succeeding as an investment banker. The first of your concerns would be client relationships and networking (you can't learn this in any classroom), and the second would be the law. A lot of potential deals don't get to push through because of legal issues, and the greatest bankers are those who can get the deal through under the best terms to the client despite tremendous legal difficulties (assuming, of course, you bag the deal with the client in the first place).

Yep, a lot of fresh grads are enamored by investment banking because gusto nilang mag-valuation. But valuation is not really high on the investment banking food chain, slightly higher lang siya than a goffer who goes for this and that (documentation and admin stuff). Actually most deals here are priced before an excel spreadsheet is opened.

If you guys want to have successful investment banking careers, start building on your relationship capital and learn how to spot business opportunities. A great investment banker can spot opportunities that even the corporate client cannot see.
