OPENING today ang Ignite Media and GMA Films movie na Batanes directed by Dave Hukom and Adolfo Alix Jr.

Last Monday, nagbi-gay ng special preview for the press ang pelikula with the main stars Ken Chu and Iza Calzado in attendance together with their co-stars Mike Tan, Coco Martin and Joem Bascon. What impressed us most in the movie were its technical aspect and the acting ability of the stars.

Pang-international talaga ang dating ng pelikula with the two main stars Ken, who is a member of the Taiwanese superstar group F4, and Iza who is about to break in Hollywood with her movie The Echo.

By: Nitz Miralles

Ang sagot niya’y, “I really love the script, I gave a lot of discount.”

Ang nabasa namin sa Net, 3 million yuan ang TF niya at ang alam namin, he was paid in US dollars.

At sabi ko nga, first time ring nagpa-sexy ni Iza.

Batanes Buzz

iGMA was there when the cast of Batanes invited the members of the media in an exclusive press screening at the Podium last Monday, December 3, 2007. Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

Even the members of the media were excited to watch Batanes: Ang Pag-Ibig ay Walang Hangganan. In an exclusive screening for the press at the Podium last Monday, December 3, 2007, the entire cast as well as the producers and directors of the film answered questions regarding the creation of the much talked about movie.

Of course, the buzz centered around Asian Superstar Ken Chu and how he was signed on to play the role of a Taiwanese fisherman. Director Adolf Alix Jr. himself is still very much in awe at how it all worked out. “Arleen [Cuevas], our Line Producer, and I were searching for Taiwanese actors. One of Arleen’s friends from Hong Kong suggested we give the script to Ken directly. Out of our gut feel, Arlene sent the script directly to Ken.”

After a week they got a reply. Ken was not only willing to do the project. He was also excited about the script and even gave his input to make his character even more authentic.

Direk Adolf adds “He added insights on how the material can be truthful in terms of the Taiwanese character.”

The Pinoy press could not help themselves and asked the most important question of all. How much was the F4 member’s talent fee?

Ken himself gamely answered. “The only thing I can say is that because I really love the script, I gave a lot of discounts.” Then he gave his signature hearty laugh.

Turning Ivatan

Aside from the advanced screening of the film, another highlight of the event was the special citation given to Ken Chu and Iza Calzado by the province of Batanes.

The Mayor of Basco himself officially made the stars of the film the province’s adopted son and daughter. He gave Iza a vakul, the headdress worn by Ivatan women that helps protect them from the strong winds and rain that pass through the island. Meanwhile, Ken received a kanayi, a native vest worn by the men.

Both Ken and Iza were overwhelmed and eagerly donned their new native gear to the delight of the press.

Batanes: Ang Pag-Ibig ay Walang Hangganan will be shown in theaters on December 5 with a premiere night on December 4 at Trinoma Mall.

Fall in Love with Batanes
Article posted December 05, 2007

Can love conquer differences in culture and language? Can one woman fight the mighty force of the sea? Can one place have so much beauty but also cause so much pain? These are the questions that are answered in the epic tale of love and loss in Batanes: Ang Pag-Ibig ay Walang Hangganan. Text by KC M Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio and Ignite Media.

In the paradise islands of Batanes, the sea is a jealous lover that demands respect and attention. She is powerful. She is temperamental. She is a force to be reckoned with. This is according to Rico, Joem Bascon’s character in the film. Pam, exceptionally played by the lovely Iza Calzado, finds out exactly what Rico meant when she goes head to head with the strength of the mighty sea.

But the sea is as generous as she is demanding. In the midst of her angry storm, Pam is given another chance to prove her mettle when she finds Kao, portrayed by Ken Chu. The film then takes on another significant turn.

Can two people from two different cultures, who do not even speak the same language, find it in themselves to fall in love once again?

Crossing Cultures

In a grand premiere night last December 4, 2007 at Trinoma Mall, people waited for hours to finally watch the much talked about film, Batanes. Fans lined the red carpet, eagerly waiting for a glimpse of the stars. People from as far as Cebu, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore clamored for tickets to watch this supposedly quiet little indie film.

iGMA was able to ask Ken and Iza if it was difficult to build a rapport between them, given the fact that they were technically marooned in a far off island for this project. This is the first time that the former F4 member got a chance to work with Filipinos.

Ken said "At first I thought there would be a gap. But after working with Iza, I found out that the way we try to communicate with each other, the things that we talked about basically, we’re the same."

And Iza replied by saying "What I feel is that most people are really the same. It doesn’t really depend what culture they’re from. Maybe in some small things lang, trivial things. Even with working with other foreigners, that’s what I realized we’re all the same."

GMA Films and Ignite Media are already under negotiations to distribute the film all across Asia. There are also plans of entering the movie in film festivals. According to Director Adolf Alix Jr. Ignite wanted to produce a movie that can cross over. And, time and again it has been proven that there is nothing like a good love story to cross the boundaries of language and culture.

The regular showing of Batanes: Ang Pag-Ibig ay Walang Hangganan will be on December 5.

By: Gerry Ocampo
Hot Shots

Timing
Rowena Agilada

KEN Chu and Iza Calzado were officially proclaimed adopted son and daughter of Batanes, respectively, sa isang short ceremony sa presscon cum special press screening ng "Batanes" sa Podium cinema.

Camote cue!

If only for that, kaaya-ayang panoorin ang "Batanes" na magkakaroon din ng international screening.

Due to Iza-Ken Chu love scene, ‘Batanes’ gets PG-13

Kaye Villagomez

The Movie and Television Ratings and Classification Board (MTRCB) stamped "Batanes" a PG–13 rating instead of the expected General Patronage due to love scenes involving Iza Calzado and Taiwanese star Ken Chu.

Iza was a little shocked to learn that those little scenes where she showed some skin may have caused the rating. "Likod lang naman yung nakita sa akin," she said.

During the press preview of the movie on Monday however, it was clearly established that the bed scenes involving Iza and Ken and Iza and her husband in the movie played by Joem Bascon were imperatives to the love story.

Set in the paradise of Batanes, the movie centers on the love that conquered not only racial gaps and language barriers but also the baggage the lovers were loaded with. Both Iza and Ken’s characters were reeling over a lost love in the movie when they chanced upon each other in the captivating but sometimes storm–vicious island.

Ken offered to lower his talent fee

In simple English, the former F4 boy band member disclosed to the media that his talent fee was "very much discounted" because he "fell in love with the script" when it was sent to him.

But Ken was in for a bigger surprise when he went to the Philippines to shoot the movie. "I found out that Batanes was worth falling for. It’s like the last Paradise on earth."

Both Ken and Iza denied earlier rumors that they did not get along on the set allegedly because Iza did not know how big a star Ken is in Taiwan. "I know very well who he is and how famous he is," explained Iza.

"On the contrary, we got along very well that we were teasing Ken, ‘Pinoy ka naman eh!’ He was very Filipino in terms of character." Then Iza turned to Ken saying, "Well, I don’t suppose everyone in Taiwan is very much like you but as far as I can recall about working with people with other nationalities, they are all pretty much the same."

Iza, of course, has been gaining international recognition having starred in the Singapore-based "Mona" and having shot the Hollywood version of "Sigaw" recently.

The GMA Films and Ignite productions teams also felt the same toward Ken, whom GMA producers call a "Kapuso."

Ken knew learned about the role through a friend of one of the producers. Insiders to "Batanes" recalled, "We were searching for a Taiwanese actor for the job and a friend knew a friend of Ken so we sent the script hoping he will like it."

But he did not only agreed to it, said Ken, the entire movie–making process even interested in owning a land in Batanes. Considering that he cannot own properties in the country because he is not a citizen, he might just be closer to it because Ken was just proclaimed adopted son of Batanes. Iza was likewise recognized as the island’s adopted daughter.

Ken, along with his former F4 bandmates are also planning to reunite and will come up with an album early 2008 under a new name.

Batanes goes international

Meanwhile, GMA Films first fell in love with the story, which they initially thought was and unlikely product from GMA Films. The network’s Joey Abacan told the media on Monday’s preview at the Podium, "GMA is not used to doing projects like this one but it was too irresistible to pass off."

As early as now, the visual poetry that’s "Batanes" is also being pushed to compete in international film festivals. The movie directed by Adolf Alix and Dave Hukom started regular theater run yesterday. "Batanes" also stars Bembol Roco, Daria Ramirez, Sid Lucero, Mike Tan, Joem Bascon, Coco Martin, Glaiza de Castro and Julio Diaz.

Beyond the Sea
by Philbert Ortiz Dy
posted on Thursday December 6, 2007

Beyond the Sea Batanes is lavishly produced, wonderfully shot, and more than competently acted. A few foibles in the script department threaten to make it all fall apart, but it manages to keep it together long enough to make it work.

Pam is a stressed-out city dweller who crosses paths with Rico. They fall in love. Rico brings her to his hometown of Batanes, where he shares with her his love for the sea. One day, Rico doesn’t come back from fishing. A year later, Pam is still mourning for Rico, and she’s developed resentment for the sea. That’s when Kao, a Taiwanese fisherman, suddenly enters her life.

It’s all a little hard to summarize, but basically, it’s about Pam’s relationship with the sea. The sea in this film is a living, breathing character, prone to anger yet unyieldingly generous when it wants to be. It’s an interesting conceit, and it mostly works, mainly because of some truly excellent filmmaking.

There is real skill behind the camera here. Batanes’ wild land and seascape make for some dramatic imagery, and this film doesn’t waste a frame. There are some truly gorgeous frames in this film, and they help create a personality for the island and the sea that surrounds it. It feels like a lot of thought was put into every shot, and as such, the camera moves with grace and purpose.

But it isn’t all good. The script is really clunky at times, especially when trying to establish changes in people. The entire beginning sequence serves to show us how Pam and Rico meet, but not how they fell in love, or how Pam came to decide to go to Batanes. That seems like a pretty important thing to establish, story-wise. Without it, the emotions just aren’t as strong as they could be. The reliance on voice-over really weakens it as well.

And then there are the subtitles. The film features Tagalog, some Mandarin, some Ivatan, and some English, and strangely, the entire film is subtitled in English. It’s a little jarring, and definitely a strange choice. One can understand the need for some subtitles, but it weakens the experience, and actually muddles one of the film’s major themes.

Still, those don’t take too much away from the filmmaking. On the acting side of things, it’s generally pretty good. Iza Calzado is fantastic from beginning to end. There is a physical aspect to her character development that is simply amazing to watch. Ken Zhu is okay, and mostly gets the point across. The supporting cast is really strong, and they really prop up the leads.

In the end, it’s really the filmmaking the holds up. There are weaknesses to this film, but it’s almost hard to notice them sometimes, when it offers up poignant little scenes coupled with powerful images. It’s almost enough to see that level of skill and care put into every frame.

My Rating: 3.5/5

yeah, ang mga ganitong klaseng tao ang dahilan kung bakit hindi na tumuloy-tuloy ang pag unlad ng industriya ng pelikula sa pilipinas. filipinos should learn how to applaud and appreciate the considerable efforts that are put forth in productions like 'batanes'. the people behind batanes are obviously trying their best to elevate the state of the filipino film by producing a material that has both substance and beauty. why laugh at and ridicule those people who are trying their best to breathe new life into philippine cinema??? ikaw ba may nagawa ka na, na-icontribute bukod sa mag post ng mga messages katulad nyang ipi-nost mo? these new producers should be encouraged, not crucified by such a comment. such cinematic efforts, wether mainstream or independent should be commended para gumawa pa sila ng mas maraming quality films, so we audiences won't get stuck with the stereotype, trite, shallow materials that other big studios keep on feeding us. shame on you.

i've seen 'batanes' and i didnt' find it boring or mabagal. i like that the movie is very introspective -- i think the filmakers meant the material to be so. also, the simplicity and subtlety of the movie is what makes it powerful in the end. paminsan-minsan naman it would be nice to watch a movie that would not only entertain and make you feel good, but would also make you reflect about life as well. puro na lang kasi tayo aksyon, kababawan and kakiligan lang most of the time. i guess it just takes some intelligence and insight
to appreciate a movie like 'batanes'. peace!

Iza Calzado grabeng humalik!

Telesforo Castillejos, Rep.
