    Anyone Here Into Jazz?

New to the forum. And looking at all the threads and topics, its kinda frustrating finding a topic I'd want to include myself in, what with all the worship threads for the local rock bands and singing contest winners.

Looking for someone to exchange views with regarding jazz, sharing of albums, letting me know of new releases, etc. I'd be more into smooth (?) jazz, and a bit of fusion. Old favorites are the Yellowjackets, Weather Report, Eric Marienthal, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, Boney James, Larry Carlton, Chris Botti (especially when he carves out gems with Lee Ritenour, but not so much a fan of his electronica exploration) and the list goes on.

    Anyone out there?

i'm a fan of the late great art porter, lalah hathaway, patrick o'hearn, the swing out sisters (although arguably they're into pop too), workshy ( same case w/ s.o.s.), the old works of ebtg, boy katindig, pauline wilson, hiroshima, yutaka yokokura, the doobie brothers, and a whole lot more

unfortunately, ever since citylite 88.3 signed off 4 or 5 years ago, i haven't really followed the smooth jazz scene since then

Saw Johnny Alegre perform with his band in Shangri-La Mall a couple of months back. The guy was awesome to say the least.

I'm not really a big fan of Chuck Mangione, although my uncle left an old record of his in our old house, which I listened to and kinda appreciated. It was the Live At The Village album..that was around 1990, although I think the recording was around 87-88, not too sure. I remember always waking up to Chasing The Clouds Away and a very soulful rendition of Feel So Good.

The Golden Mile, which is Workshy's most popular album, in my opinion, is also their best album ever. No songs to throw away on that one. I could actually say the same thing about Hiroshima. Go was an album of very soothing songs, but their most popular album, East, would also be their best. Who could resist Tabo, and of course...Come To Me

Yeah, I hear you on that one--since CT died, my interest in FM radio waned. Joey was a good alternative, sad to say, it died as well. Although DreamFM and Crossover are good alternatives, they've become way too diverse in terms of music genres. Methinks Crossover is even trying to compete with XFM aka 92.3 Joey on getting the younger electronica/chill out listener market.

That's cool! I really envy you for having a Chuck Mangione record. I just have Feels So Good, Give It All You Got on MP3. I never missed a single gig of Affinty when they performed almost every weekend at Gateway last year.

Dude, matagal nang may gumagawa ng jazz-related threads dito. Only to be sent hurtling into oblivion dahil sobrang konti lang ng jazzistang PExers :S Sad. There's this gem of a thread here called "Acquired Taste" with its resident musical sage of a PExer, Groucho. Lagi nga lang nare-relegate sa malayong pages of the MnR forum. Btw, i'm Mrs. Chris Botti

Favorite ko sa Hiroshima, Thousand Cranes. Galing. Ok nga rin Come to Me. Atsaka The Door is Open. I love cueing that after Bob and Hilary James' Just Like My Lover on my player. As for Swing Out Sister, check out their Where Our Love Grows album. Experimental. May tracks na Brasilian ang flavor (Caipirinha), meron namang sinample pa yung Ironside track off the Kill Bill Vol. 1 OST (Certain Shades of Limelight).

Galing nga ni Johnny Alegre. Along with Affinity, I really admire WDOUJI and Aquarela.

Haaay. Feels So Good. The version with Don Potter on vocals just kills me.

Patrick O'Hearn as in Forever the Optimist? That song is soooo City Lite.

My favourite local jazz drummer at the moment is Koko Bermejo. He told Ala Paredes' defunct saturday afternoon programme IslaMusik candidly "he'd rather play jazz than brush his teeth."

Since time immemorial, jazz radio stations based in Manila have always been that of the "mestizo" variety: the medium with a dash of local flavor.

Most Filipinos I notice, had a rather shallow appreciation for jazz. When they think of jazz, remakes of standard hits came to their mind. There are some of those who have even mistaken R&B as an extension of jazz music, and got themselves mixed up with the variety dished out by younger black artists.

I don't think I would be able to get free jazz radio here, the mainstream one I mean. But thanks to the Net, I could now listen to one of the many stations in the States that knows the jazz jargon better than the rest of the world.

dindi:di ko masyadong trip iyong may vocals version ng feels so good hehehe for some reason i just can't appreciate it as much as the original recording and the live one he did (i think he really outdid himself there w/ the improvisation of the "new year song"/auld lang syne-feels so good combo.

thousand cranes...galing talaga nun. pero gusto ko din iyong 311 song nila aside from the come to me track

s.o.s....i like the stoned soul picnic version of theirs but the song forever blue really stirs my soul

there's another piece of patrick o'hearn's i love; it's called irene and yes it's another citylite track

and btw, your nic is another one of those citylite classics sung by willie bobo w/c my old jazz fiend friends like a lot

o nga pala, anyone here remember brother wayne?

poweesteering: kelan at saan iyong jazzfest?

btw medyo sa acid jazz side pero buhay pa pala ang brand new heavies noh? and what's great is they're back w/ n'dea davenport to boot! unfortunately i have yet to hear any of their new releases, iyong cd pa lang nakita ko

baludoy: for some reason, i knew someone would say that re: Feels So Good with vocals. ewan ko ba. ang romantic lang kasi nung lyrics, e

re: Dindi... sa mga nakauunawa, they pronounce my name as zheen-zhee. syempre nung nag-intern ako sa City Lite, lahat sila ganun ang pagbigkas ng pangalan ko. sarap pakinggan i do like Willie Bobo's version, too! besides that, i also like Jane Monheit's.

si Brother Wayne ba yung VO ng Philip Morris Rhythms Take 3 sa CT dati? i can't forget their So Nice Take 3... tapos yung bed pa nung OBB/CBB was Weather Report's Birdland...

baludoy: hahaha alam mo ang trabaho ko dun e taga-kuha ng CDs sa shelves nila na gagamitin nung mga DJ... you won't believe how bloody tempting it was to do that their prod manager actually made the very generous offer of letting me take my pick sa library nila at kokopyahin nya para sa akin. sobrang bait nya, nahiya ako. engot, 'no?

btw, may kopya ka po ba ng forever the optimist? may kasama ko sa work na dating DJ ng CT at meron sya nun kaso nasa phone nya at aac format...

Sent an earlier post, probably didnt come through. Anyway, I was in Music 1 yesterday looking for the Tender Ritual album (Jim Chappell). Didnt find it though...Heck, didnt find any Chappell album at all. But what really frustrated me was the proliferation of all these "bossa nova" albums tucked on the Jazz shelves.

Bossa Nova freaks, I dont have anything against this genre. It just ticks me off how some wise a** producers try to jump on the bandwagon by scouting for a female showband singer, package her as a sultry li'l vamp, grab a couple of old songs, tweak the melody and rhythm a bit and make it sound a bit "samba-esque", ask her to sing 'em as if she was seducing a hunky island guy, and there you go, an instant "bossa nova" album.

I find it insulting how producers cash in on this mania, always being on the safe side by rehashing old hits and marketing them as something musically intelligent. I dont mind a few covers, but having a whole album of it?

Reminds me of the Oldies/Standards phenomenon in the early years of the millenium during the Michael Buble nightmare.

dindi - my phil perry date How's the traffic, sweetie? hehe

baludoy: i wasn't offering... i was asking hahaha

Heya Jem... ranting against the bossa nova machinery, eh? I feel ya, man I gotta disagree with you on your other point, though. Indeed, there was the standards nightmare (which still isn't over, btw) but Michael Buble wasn't part of it. Jamie Cullum, Rod Stewart and Michael Buble were
