women's basketball league in the works?

i watched an interview earlier tonight where pato gregorio, the executive director of the sbp, casually mentioned that an amateur commercial basketball league for women may be in the pipeline.

apparently the sbp head honcho was impressed w/ the success of the 10 team women's league in indonesia. he says if an islamic country like indonesia can pull it off, why can't a relatively more liberal country like ours can't.

now, should this idea attract investors and this all-lady league does come into fruition, do you guys think it will be as successful as it indonesian counterpart?

    Hmmm...very interesting.

If done right, might make people who are disenchanted with the PBA switch viewing preference. Entertainment wise it would definitely be a novelty. Just needs to find way to sustain itself. But in terms of talent would definitely pale in comparison to the PBA.

Having a commercial league for women would definitely give female basketball players a livelihood option and would generate greater interest in the sport beyond college ball.

Maybe it can even use the MBA's regional approach. Then again it does have the WNBA for a pattern. Hopefully they will use FIBA rules and FIBA measurements and force the PBA eventually to do the same.

kung magkaroon tayo ng women's league, it's possible in the WNBA offseason na we can hire some of the WNBA players as imports if they're not playing in europe or asia.

Comparing the skills of women ballers in Europe and Asia, Pinay ballers are raw. Sure, it's a novelty but will it attract people in the long run with teams scoring only in the 40s or 50s. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against women ballers and I do enjoy them play sometimes but c'mon! The Detroit-San Antonio finals back in '05 brought Snore Ball to the world, yet they score in the 80s or 90s. Sure, Billups, Duncan, et al are skilled ballers but we're still talking of pro ball and you're going to have a women's pro ball league in the philippines?

On the flipside, this could be a springboard to an RP Women's basketball team.

(where the hell am I going with my arguments?)

It should start slow, wag idramatic bigla. But, I think it would help elevate women's basketball a little kasi, parang pag tapos na ang player sa college it's either the national team or the office world ang susunod na laglag ng mga babaeng basketbolista.

if ever this league becomes a reality, i hope they make it similar to what we had before.. mala-PBL style na lang. ever bilena pa nga yata ang nagchampion dati..

One way is to pattern the League into something similar to the Shakey's V-League. Initial members would be players of NCAA and UAAP schools. But eventually, the league would allow graduates/alumni of the schools or players of other schools that are not a member of the Women's league.
