‘Rounin,’ an ambitious teleserye to watch out for

A really ambitious and exciting teleserye to watch out for on ABS-CBN this April is "Rounin," which incidentally is being called "tele-epiko" because of its epic proportions. "Rounin," topbilled by Diether Ocampo, is expected to bring Filipino televiewers to greater heights of TV entertainment starting this month.

Certainly, "Rounin" is one of the most anticipated series in local history, what with its techologically advanced animation and effects, unique plot and superb direction from Erik Matti and co-directors Jerome Pobocan and Richard Somes. But aside from these reasons, viewers should also watch out for the all-star cast of characters that will surely make the series more memorable and exciting.

The Rounin are the elite warriors of the land of Lumeria. But although they are the greatest warriors, love is their greatest battle.

Leading the pack is Cadmus (Diether Ocampo), the master Rounin, leader of Lumeria. He rules with wisdom, not force. He was elevated to Master Rounin because he is the only survivor of the legendary Rounin circle that fought and won the great war that gave Lumeria ultimate freedom and peace.

There are five new Rounin. Juris, played by Luis Manzano, is the strongest Rounin, but his greatest weakness is love. He has a forbidden relationship with another Rounin, Aura. Aura (Angelica Panganiban), is the master of Aria (Wu Shu). In fighting, she is motivated by love: Love for the kingdom and her forbidden love for Juris.

Creon, played by Rafael Rosell, is the son of Xander, co–Rounin of Cadmus. He feels pressure from being the son of a legendary Rounin. He is Juris’ best friend, but has always resented being second best to him – in combat, and in the heart of Aura, whom he secretly loves. Leal (Nikki Gil) is the Master of Katana. A true friend whose loyalty to the law of the land is beyond reproach, Leal is a joyous person, which endears her to the people around her. But her cheerful façade hides a dark past that involves her true love and her obligations as a Rounin. Completing the circle of the Rounin is Venom, played by Jhong Hilario. A master of Shado, he exhibits sorcery and magical powers. His loyalty is not with the kingdom, but with Creon, because he owes his Rounin mastery from him.

He is Selene’s closest ally, but is slowly falling in love with her. Mythos (Rayver Cruz), the newest student, has the natural abilities of a Rounin. His search for his father will lead him to become Lumeria’s hero.

Plotting against the Rounin and the kingdom of Lumeria is Vega (Aubrey Miles), heiress to the throne of Hellion, and daughter of Draco (Monsour del Rosario), Cadmus’ arch-enemy. Fighting in her name is Braulio (AJ Dee), her faithful servant, who is secretly in love with her.

Joining the good side is Kirra, played by Aaron Junatas. Kirra is an Enyo, a race of people who look like children, but are in fact, adults. Having the power to heal injuries except his own, he becomes instrumental in Mythos’ training as a Rounin and his discovery of his identity. Another character, Xyrus (Geoff Eigenmann), a former inhabitant of the criminal world Argos, is instrumental in the battle of a Rounin – Juris. Aside from this, he is also Leal’s true love.

Other key characters in the story are Deinara (Ina Raymundo), Mythos’ mother; Xander (TJ Trinidad), father to Mythos and Creon; Mang Elli (Ronnie Lazaro), Mythos’ mentor; Raysian (Melissa Ricks), a conniving Rouninintraining; and Naya (Agot Isidro), Selene’s mother who carries her secret of her daughter’s true identity.

Some special guests, who will be playing signifacant roles in the story, are Carlos Agassi, Steven Fermo, John Apacible, Mhyco Aquino, Rico Barrera, Cris Daluz, Paw Diaz, Dexter Doria, Bea Nicolas, Renee Summer and Owen Bowen.

"Rounin" also stars Emilio Garcia, Jairus Aquino, Sharlene San Pedro, Jenny Hernandez, Janice Huang and Juddha Paolo.

After more than a year of waiting, the biggest and most ambitious telefantasya from ABS-CBN, "Rounin" is finally hitting the television screens. And Luis Manzano, one of the lead stars of this new TV series, is very excited with the show's forthcoming release.

"The show is really different. Most people who've seen the teaser thought this is a film done in Hollywood," says Luis. "It's very tiring to do it and as an artist, for a while, we also felt nakakapagod na rin to do it since we've been working on it for more than a year yet we haven't seen the finished product. But when we were shown the rushes of Rounin and saw how impressive it looked, everyone was so inspired to get back to work."

Unfortunately, their set that was constructed inside an abandoned cement factory was damaged by a typhoon and need to be rebuilt. According to Luis, their fabulous set alone is more than worth all the hardships they went through to make "Rounin" worth the wait and the staggering budget spent for it.

A tough call for Rounin’s cast

The making of Rounin, ABS-CBN’s boldest summer fantasy teleserye since Ang Panday, was difficult. Searching people for the cast was like finding a needle in a haystack.

“The fight scenes, which required us to do different sword fights while dangling on invisible chords, combine wushu and muai tai to give fights a fresh flare. We all trained for this because the roles strictly demanded it,” recalled Luis Manzano of his elaborate scenes, executed inside an abandoned building.

Rounin, which is linked with John Frankenheimer’s film Ronin, is a distant world of magical powers inhabited by gifted warriors who live by an ancient code. It is typical of Chinese martial arts movie romanticized to give it a Pinoy telenovela flare.

Rounin, led by Diether Ocampo and Manzano, also features ABS-CBN’s major stars (Angelica Jones, Shaina Magdayao and Nikki Gil). It is a launchpad for aspiring ABS-CBN talents wanting to make it big like Sarah Geronimo or Jericho Rosales.

Rounin hits primetime Pinoy television late this April. Watch out for it!
