    Ateneo Law

Hi guys! I'm a 3rd Computer Science Student in DLSU right now.. If finances and interest permit me to enroll in law school, Ateneo's my best bet..

any one of you know the requirements to get in ADMU's law school or tips on how to get in?

I've been hearing things like certain units in english, spanish and other liberal arts courses etc. As we all know, not many of these are offered in a technical course like cs >< I tried to check ADMU's site but I think the link to the Law school section has a problem...

    Thanks evryone!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. What is the Ateneo Law School?

The Ateneo de Manila Law School is a Catholic and Jesuit institution situated within the larger Ateneo de Manila University. It was established in June 1936 to help form and develop good and committed lawyers.

As a Catholic school, it is committed to making in an institutional manner a Christian presence in the legal world by fidelity to the Christian message as it comes through the Church and by service to others, especially to the underprivileged. As a Jesuit institution, it shares in the core mission of all Jesuit institutions within the framework of the Church’s overall mission of evangelization understood not only as proclamation of Christian faith, but also as life witness especially to a faith that accomplishes justice.

As a School of Law, the Ateneo de Manila Law School is to form men and women not only skilled in the science and art of the law, but also imbued with a burning passion for justice and the fervent desire to serve others.

    2. What is the Juris Doctor (J.D.) Program offered by the Ateneo Law School?

Graduates of the Ateneo de Manila Law School until 1990 were conferred the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). Starting 1991, the degree of Juris Doctor (J.D.) was conferred on all graduates.

The J.D. program is a rigid and enriched law curriculum which requires students to take both the core Bar subjects, and later to take elective subjects (22 units) offered to complement their knowledge of law and in order to allow them to specialize in certain fields of law; to undergo summer apprenticeship with law firms (240 hours), the courts or other government offices or agencies with quasi-judicial functions; to develop the students’ appreciation of the practical and ethical aspects of law; and finally, the students are required to prepare and defend a thesis, to develop their skills in research.

The J.D. program technically occupies a position between the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and the Master of Laws (LL.M) degree.

    3. How long does the J.D. Program take?

The J.D. program is a 4-year law course completing the core subjects, electives subjects, apprenticeship program and a thesis with maximum allowable residency of 6 years including leave of absence.

The program is carried out on a semestral basis that usually follows the national academic calendar starting in June each year.

    4. Is there a 5-year Law program or an Executive Law program?

No. The J.D. program requires all students to carry at least 80% of the units required for each semester except only in highly meritorious cases authorized in writing by the Dean. In this manner, the 4-year program extends to 5-year program.

    5. What are the requirements for admission into the J.D. Program?

Applicant should be a graduate of Bachelor’s degree and should have earned 18 units of English, 6 units of Mathematics, 18 units of Social Science and 3 units of Rizal course.

The applicant must also accomplish an application form online.
He or she should pass the school’s entrance examination. For admission to the examination, the following must be submitted.

    - photocopy of collegiate transcript or records showing compliance with eligibility requirements above. If graduation is not yet reflected, a certification of candidacy for graduation prior to entrance in the law course must be appended to transcript.

    - 1 copy of ID picture, size 1” x 1” (with red background)

    - 2 copies of I.D. picture, size 2” x 2” (any color)

    - payment of testing fee of Php1,400.00

    - He must also submit two recommendations: one academic recommendation from the dean or faculty member of his school, and one recommendation from a reputable source.

Application period for the SY 2007-2008 is until February 28, 2007.

    6. Are applicants required to undergo interviews prior to admission?

The Admissions Committee recommends to the Dean those qualified for admission into the program. Interviews are conducted by the Admissions Committee based on the application results of the entrance examinations of the applicants.

    7. How much are the tuition and other matriculation fees of the Program?

For a First Year student for FY 2007-2008 corresponding to full load units will approximately cost a total of P54,000.00 including all tuition and other fees payable upon enrollment in cash, check or in credit card.

The student may opt to pay this amount in 2 or 4 installment payments.

    8. Is there Scholarship available for qualified applicants?

Yes, but only on a selective basis. Scholarships are extended to deserving students under certain criteria. Interested applicants may see the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs for more information.

    10. Is the Bachelor of Laws Program (LL.B. degree) still offered?

No. Please refer to Question Number 2.

    11. Is Apprenticeship required to complete the J.D. program?

Yes, as a matter of academic policy and in line with the thrust to infuse the practical applications of the law in the students, the Ateneo Law School has accredited a number of law offices for the practicum to be carried out. Apprenticeship is allowed only to Sophomores and Juniors Students and during the summer vacation period.

    12. What support does the student get in performing his research as a terminal requirement of the program?

The student is helped by the Thesis Center and a selected Faculty adviser.

    13. Who are the professors who teach in the Ateneo Law School?

In line with the emphasis on practical aspects of law in the J.D. Program, all professors in the Ateneo Law School are legal practitioners in their own right either corporately or professionally. Many are legal luminaries actually involved in the judiciary as judges and justices and as litigation lawyers. A number of them are noted constitutional experts, international law experts, and corporate legal professionals.

    14. What other services are offered by the Ateneo Law School?

To help the students achieve their educational objectives, the Ateneo Professional Schools Library provides one of the best resources for library work. It contains massive collections of law books, researches, journals, and other materials for the study of law. Apart from this, there are Centers and Publications that the students may want to be involved in with while studying law.

    15. Can non-Filipino enroll in the Ateneo Law School?

Damn! In my degree program, we only have 9 units of English... That means I have to take 9 more! whoa...

Crap! I've already taken too much math for Law school! I've taken 19 already.. That translates to 13 wasted units!

18 units of Social Science.... theology subjects counted??? >< WTH

Yeah yeah I've taken a 3 unit Rizal course...

Seems like I still have to take a considerable number of subjects to get into law school ><

    Thanks for the reply tho!
