    Is UP producing atheists?

I must admit. I have spent more years in Catholic schools than at UP. Besides, my only ties at the State U was limited within the halls of the College whose "business is not simply to teach law or make lawyers but to teach law in the grand manner and to make great lawyers." Thus, from elementary days to my undergraduate, my mind was molded by Benedictine monks and Christian Brothers. Not even UP's liberal and God-less education was able to make me a non-believer. A former mentor even told me that he, himself, came from a Catholic school but when he entered UP as a law student, he believed in his self, not to the Almighty. The same mentality that was shown to me by my atheist classmates who were products of the CSSP. Is UP trying to train students to be non-believers?

theology would be a sucky subject. i'm glad i never had to shell out 900 pesos to study saints. the core of up education, at least for me, is to produce open-minded and critical graduates. in up, we were exposed to different perspectives on god and religion pero most of all, we were taught how to think for ourselves. it's really all up to us what we become based on our own judgement of things.

I think UP is not training its students to be Atheist. Rather we are being trained to think so that we could choose what path/belief that we should follow. Kasi if UP would train their students to be Atheist, then obviously, dinedefeat nila yung consepto ng liberal education, kasi nagbibigay bias sila sa isang school of thought.

I also don't think na God-less and education sa UP, kasi when we say na God-less ang education sa UP, then it means na the university has a conscious effort of removing the concept of God sa edukasyon ng mga taga-UP. Pero this is obviously not true, since religion is being taught in the university. For one, mayroon Islamic Center sa UP, then the social science classes tinuturo yung mga writings ni St. Augustine at ni St. Thomas. Tapos sa History class namin, pinagaaralan namin yung Buddhisism, Hinduism.

If ever mayroong mga atheist sa UP, that is because they chose it and not because UP trained them to be one.

UP doesn't have Religion classes. But that does not mean UP creates Atheists out of her students.

    True story:

Nagre-register ako sa adviser ko sa M.E. Dept. Merong student doon na nag-transfer from Ateneo. Inaasar ni Prof yung transcript.

    Prof: ANO 'TO? Theology?! Whatdapak!
    Me: Hehehehehehe

UP is simply instructing students to have a deeper understanding of their religion and ergo, their religious beliefs... i dont believe that it automatically elects UP as producing atheists...

  9. #9
definitely not,,,, UP is a community of students with different religions. We do not pray before the class unlike in a catholic school but we respect each and everyone of us no matter what religion they believe in. For me, it is not his/her religion that defines a person but it is his/her inner being/self.

Naging law student ka?! At sa U.P. pa?! I doubt it kasi isang requirement dun ang pagkakaroon ng utak. You know, kelangan kasi ng logic at critical thinking sa law school eh.

I did become an athiest when I entered UP, but that doesnt mean UP promotes that religious orientation (or the lack of it, so to speak). THey gave us a very liberal and secular education. Almost nothing is sacred. Every side of every issue is presented objectively (mostly). Then its up to us to choose, to think critically before making any decisions.
Case in point; My subject in Philo of Religion: We were taught philosphical arguments for the existence of god. But we also discussed counter-arguments for these propositions. Both were discussed objectively. (Something, other schools wouldnt do, specially sectarian institutions. Or if in case they did, mas emphasized and they have obvious bias on the arguments for the existence of a god.)

saying that up produces atheists is a narrow-minded thing

why, does any educational institution produce the "religious"?

For those who might be interested:

Pick up a book entitled "God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, a leading evolutionary bio-scientifico-philosopher. It's a passionate (and at times comedic) refutal of theistic belief. It also serves as an excellent survey of philosophical theology. Warning: This book may just change the way you think. For me, it's just another philosophy mumbo-jumbo.

There is a whole section devoted to the current beliefs of the scientific and intellectual community (which presumably includes UP professors and students).
