Letran in Middle East Philippine Schools
by Golda Aira Crisostomo - Letran News November - December 2008
    10 countries, 22 days.

An avenue for Colegio de San Juan de Letran to visit the Middle East Philippine schools occurred last October 17 to November 6 when Asst. Prof. Golda Aira V. Crisostomo joined Dr. Mecheline Zonia I. Manalastas, Director for Admissions of the University of Santo Tomas, for the administration of the USTET in Philippine schools in Oman, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jeddah, Al-Khobar and Riyadh.

Letran was introduced as the sister school of UST in the career talks held in 20 schools. The third year students who attended the orientation had a glimpse of the Colegio as well as an idea of the Abucay campus and its course offerings.

This endeavor hopes to convince Filipino high school students based in the Middle East to make Letran their second home when they come back to the Philippines for their tertiary education.

Ambassadors of the Philippines to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as well as the Consul General of Jeddah welcomed Colegio de San Juan de Letran in their respective countries of assignment.

iComm student wins in Dubai awards
by Jhennie Villar - Letran News November - December 2008

The Philippines could be proud for winning in the Ibda’a Media Student Awards held in Dubai last November 27, but Letran is prouder because the student-winner came from the Colegio.

Robert Leeroy Lim, a third year Broadcasting student of the Institute of Communication, won in the Best Radio Documentary category, out of the entries from other countries around the globe.

The Ibda’a Media Student Awards was participated in by 25 countries worldwide this year.

Four entries were initially shortlisted from the Philippines—three of which came from Letran and the another one from the University of the Philippines.

Letranites attended the gala ceremony of the Dubai-organized annual search and left the Philippines last November 23 on an all-expense paid trip.

Communication Arts students, Kathryn Jerry Perez and Apple Jane Bernardino, represented the country as well.

Lim received a trophy, including a possible internship in a global media company. In his acceptance speech, Lim offered the award to his countrymen and to his Alma Mater saying in “Yung award ko po ay para sa lahat ng Filipino, para po sa mga taga Dubai. Salamat po sa Ibda’a and this award is for Letran. Arriba! Arriba!”

In an Internet post on abs-cbn.com, it was reported that the Philippine Consul to Dubai, Vivencio Butch Bandillo, lauded the success of Lim.

“We’ve done our country proud tonight, and I suppose this is just the beginning. I look forward to even greater triumphs in the years to come,” Bandillo said.

On the other hand, the Colegio showed support to the students by providing them financial assistance for the trip. Cash was awarded them by Fr. Boyd Sulpico, O.P., Vice President for Financial Affairs with Director Rowena Capulong-Reyes of iComm, to serve as pocket money of the students while in the Middle East.

Capulong-Reyes said in a text message: “I’m proud. I’m shaking.”

Who is not proud, by the way?

by Jhennie Villar - Letran News November - December 2008

The National Federation of Centers for Human Rights Education, Inc. (NFCHRE) in partnership with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), Regional Office I and the Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementors, Inc. (PAEPI) launched Colegio de San Juan de Letran (both campuses in Intramuros and Abucay) as the Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE) on December 8. Letran-Intramuros as the CHRE in NCR and Letran-Abucay as the CHRE in Bataan.

A memorandum of agreement was entered into by Hon. Leila de Lima, Chairperson of CHRP, Hon. Eduardo Ermita, Chairman of the PHRC, Atty. Anita Chauhan, Regional Director of CHRI, Fr. Tamerlane Lana, O.P., Rector and President, Fr. Orlando Aceron, O.P., VP for Religious Affairs of Letran-Manila, Fr. Ramon Salibay, VP Religious Affairs of Letran-Bataan, Ronald Dugang, Center for Community Development (CCD) Director of Letran, Dr. Angelica Baylon, President of PAEPI and Dr. Gloria Subala, NFCHRE President.

Before the signing, talks on the theme “Dignity and Justice for All of Us” were been conducted to orient the participants on the importance of human rights.

As the newly launched Center for Human Rights Education, Letran is expected to promote and advocate the application of the rights-based approach to community development and governance.

NFCHRE was established in 2003 with the initiative of CHR Region 1 Office and Region 1 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) with the goal of building a culture of human rights among the different communities in the region.

The Center is now one of the functions of the CCD as it promotes human rights education activities for students, employees and the partner-communities.

“It’s a challenge to be chosen as a Center [for Human Rights Education]. In this regard, we [Letran administrators] will work hard to meet the expectations of the association [CHR],” Dugang, CCD director, said.

IComm wins in 2009 Art Film Fest
by Jhennie Villar - Letran News January 2009

Once again, student-produced films of the Institute of Communication made it to the 2009 Art Film Festival organized by an independent film group of Philippine Women’s University (PWU).

Out of the 10 shortlisted entries, four films came from Letran—Kamatis, Rainbow, Moog and Singaw. The 10 were chosen from among 84 entries from various schools and universities.

The special screenings of the shortlisted films were held at PWU last January 22 and 23.

The 5th Art Film Festival aimed to “promote cinematic talent and the enthusiasm to share [students’] creativity” among collegiate students in the country by acknowledging the Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Short Feature.

Letran took two of these three awards—Best Screenplay and Best Short Feature. Kamatis got the Best Screenplay award while Singaw was named Best Short Feature.

Singaw’s coherent story and Kamatis’s sharp and witty dialogues made these the unanimous choices of the judges composed of Angel Jacob, Vic Asedilo and Roy Inocencio.

Singaw follows a “balikbayan” box as it reflects about Overseas Filipino Workers while Kamatis is a coming-of-age comedy involving a group of boys.

Moog shows a professor’s journey to Jose Rizal’s era while Rainbow problematizes the reversal of sexual orientations.
Winners and finalists received certificates, prizes and clapper-board trophies.

Colegio leads Board of Educ meet
    - Letran News January 2009

Being at the helm of the Dominican Province of the Philippines (DPP)’s Board of Education (BOE), Fr. Tamerlane R. Lana, O.P., also the rector and president of the Colegio, organized an assembly for the DPP schools from January 8 to 10 at Lazo Farm in Cabuyao, Laguna.

The three-day assembly aimed to address the different provisions in the Acts of the Provincial Chapter, specifically on the area of educational apostolate.

Earlier, Father Lana had appointed a group of personnel from the Colegio to facilitate the workshops and activities lined-up for the assembly.

The first group composed of the heads of the DPP schools worked on guiding principles and administration; the second group composed of academic coordinators discussed issues on lay empowerment; the third group tasked to review religious education was attended by different religion and theology coordinators; the fourth group planned for a collaborative community and extension services, by extension coordinators; financial planning was the task of the fifth group as presented by finance managers; and the last group discussed different strategies in marketing and issues on student services, which was attended by admissions officers and student affairs directors.

At the end of the sessions, each group was able to draft an initial plan. The first group presented a revised Dominican Philosophy of Education and drafted a mission and vision for DPP schools. The second group lined-up plans and programs for school personnel (from janitors to lay administrators) with the end in view of empowering the lay to take bold steps in managing school affairs. The third group presented a roadmap for the articulation and progression of religion and theology courses. The fourth group reported on planned activities for collaborative community services. The fifth group, on the other hand, drafted an economic plan while the last group was able to design ways on how to establish linkages among DPP schools.

The DPP schools include Aquinas University of Legaspi, Colegio de San Juan de Letran of Manila, Letran College of Calamba, Angelicum College of Quezon City, Angelicum School of Iloilo and Holy Rosary College of Manaoag. Although the University of Sto. Tomas is not a DPP-member school, six administrators (covering the different areas) from the University were invited to share their expertise and rich experience on matters discussed during the workshop.

The BOE has the following functions as stipulated in the statutes of the DPP: (1) Standardize the DPP schools in accordance with currently adopted norms of accreditation; (2) forge strategies for the uplifting of educational institutions in terms of finance, academic management and administrations; and (3) initiate cooperation among educational institutions in matters of human resource development and educational technology exchange and transfer.

Dr. Amur Mayor was appointed Executive Secretary of the Board and was in-charge of the group on lay empowerment. Jhennie Villar of the Public Affairs Office, Jeffrey Consignado and Manuel Zamora, Jr., of the Office of Student and Cultural Affairs, were part of the secretariat. Each was assigned to different concerns such as student and admissions, financial affairs and religious education, respectively.

Randy Castillo was invited to assist school heads while Ronald Dugang took care of the community services group.

3 students bag Management Excellence Cup
by Jonathan P. De Leon - Letran News January 2009

Three Letran Knights competed in the 2008 Juan Sabater, OSB Management Excellence Cup at San Beda College, recently.

Jherlyn Herrera, Andrei Fajardo, and Kevin John Nolledo, handpicked representatives of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy to the cup, were on high spirits as they met students from other competing schools: St. Paul’s University-Quezon City, University of the East, Polytechnique University of the Philippines, Adamson University, Trinity University of Asia, and Chiang Kai Chek University.

“We carried around the Letran character that is full of hope and trust in God,” said Fajardo, the third year marketing student representative, when asked about the contributing factor that led to the championship.

Benedict David, coach and adviser of the team, observed that the competition “was tough, academically arduous.”

David said: “The competition was composed of three rounds: general knowledge, computation, and case analysis. The team ranked second during the first and second rounds. With Andrei’s [Fajardo] knowledge in case analysis writing and interest in cara, we were sure we would bag the cup.”

True to their belief that they would win, the team won the invitational cup that was sponsored by Management and Entrepreneurship Society.

“The team’s spirit and talent led us to the championship,” David said.

Alumnus named associate Supreme Court Justice
    - Letran News January 2009

Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, formerly of the Sandiganbayan, moved up to be a member of the highest court of the land.

He did not start in the judiciary though. He worked as a production analyst at Cosmos Bottling Corp. after his graduation from Letran in 1974 with a degree of Bachelor of Science.

He studied law at University of Santo Tomas and became a public prosecutor in Laoag City. He was later assigned in Manila as assistant fiscal. He later became the presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 95 in Quezon City, a special criminal court tasked to hear and try heinous crimes.

He twice received First Awardee as Outstanding Public Prosecutor in 1991 and 1994 respectively. In 2002, he was appointed as associate justice of the Sandiganbayan. The cases that came his way were notable, to cite a few – that of former President Joseph Estrada, business tycoon Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, Jr., and that of Maj. Gen Carlos F. Garcia.

Justice Peralta is married to another lawyer, Court of Appeals Associate Justice Fernanda Lampas-Peralta, with whom he has four children.
