Letran joins Rizal@150 Celebration
- Letran News June 2011
The rains failed to dampen the spirits of Letranites who participated in the 150th birth anniversary celebration of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Last June 19, 2011, NSTP-CWS students from Letran trooped to Rizal Park to take part in rites that paid tribute to one of the greatest Filipinos that ever lived. In spite of the heavy downpour, many Letranites stayed to take part in activities that commemorated this milestone.
The celebration kicked off with the Flag Raising ceremony, followed by Wreath Offering at the Rizal Monument. In the activity “Bulaklak ng Bayan Para sa Pambansang Bayani,” numerous students from different schools, including Letran, gave flowers to the national hero.
Letran Advertising student Miguel David said that the flowers, offered in the soaking rain, “bloomed with courage, sincerity and dedication.” Asst. Prof. Junel Labor, Chairman of the NSTP-CWS area, said that the selfless act was well worth it: “This chance to pay our respects to our beloved hero on his 150th birthday only comes once; it will never happen again. But beyond that, it makes us aware that nationalism does entail sacrifice.”
The Rizal@150 celebration also held “Takbo ni Pepe” Fun Run, Musikultura 2011, Concert at the Park, screening of films on Dr. Jose Rizal, and the slicing of a giant birthday cake for the national hero. Due to heavy rains, the planned fireworks display did not push through.
The participation of NSTP-CWS students from Letran is in line with the NSTP objective of enhancing civic consciousness in the youth by developing patriotism. It also re-enforces the Colegio’s mission of “quality formation of integral human persons” through love of country.
