Many Bedans today probably don't know Mr. Antonio Tayao. He's the prefect of discipline of our high school from way, way back. He's the epitome of a disciplinary officer; strict, arrogant, brash, etc. We both feared and respected him. He even humiliated late comers. But then, as we look back at those years, we somehow realized that the way that he instilled disciplined had turned us into responsible individuals. The limit of his strictness came in 1992, when a senior student committed suicide after he failed to graduate. He actually told his parents that he's graduating, when in fact, he was not. So, on the day of the supposed graduation, he shot himself to death. Rumors circulated that Sir Tayao was responsible for that student's failure to graduate. Months after that, Sir Tayao vanished without a trace. Then, they found his battered and lifeless body. His face was shattered. His chin was very much damaged that it simply disappeared (his wake was held at the Audio Visual room). Babalu would have given a part of his chin to Sir Tayao. Now, after 14 years, the perpetrators of Sir Tayao's brutal slaying are still at large. Many things have changed in San Beda. Our high school building is now a nursing school. The San Beda HIgh School has actually transferred to Rizal. The place where we used to play football and tennis is now the CAS Library. The old hepa zone (located along the Mendiola walls) is no more. The old covered courts is now a modern Sports Complex. The classrooms are now fully- air conditioned. Henry, the cigarette vendor, is no longer around. But still, Sir Tayao's death remains to be just another statistic.
