If Jimwell Torion is on your list, then a clear argument has to be made in favor of Joseph Yeo. Afterall, didn't he perform the same clothesline move on Enrico Villanueva? How about ramming his leg on Ford Arao's injured knee while Arao was seated on the bench?

Glen Capacio? Yes, he was a physical defender, however, I think it was only magnified by the fact that he was the only physical defender on that bubble-gum, teeny booper Purefoods team.

Kung Glen Capacio lang sa gwardiya, mas matindi sa aking opinion si Jay Ramirez, Boy Clarino or even Dennis "The Menace" Abbatuan.

^ Agree. Glenn Capacio is a choir boy compared to players before his time.

Good call on Yeo. Hmmm I need another revision on my list or at least put him on par with Torion.

Anyway, regarding Capacio, maybe I am more pissed off at him because I was a Ginebra fan then (no longer now) while he was playing for the then unliked (for me) Purefoods. He was a dirtier player than Ramirez for me probably because most of the basketball games I saw at the time were with regards to Ginebra and Capacio seemed to have a chip on his shoulders when playing Ginebra while Ramirez didn't.

Anyway, my list is based on players I saw when I already had some appreciation of the game (meaning I had enough age and roadside basketball experience). When Abbatuan was playing, I was probably still in grade school, while I don't believe I saw Boy Clarino play.

    Chito,

Good call on Dennis Abbatuan. I forgot about him, simply because he doesn't merit anything to me for his rather forgettable PBA stint (except the time when he tossed in 51 points against NCC that infuriated Ron Jacobs).

Regarding Jay Ramirez, I have a small tidbit on Ramirez as well as described to Supersonic and me vividly by our common friend, Dodo Samson (who's also Percy Flores's batchmate at UPIS). Back in college while playing for the Arellano Flaming Arrows, their school was up against my alma mater, UP Diliman. Joe Lipa was then coaching for UP and was brimming with anger as Ramirez was running rings around practically everyone in the UP team of 1985. Lipa summoned Samson, who's probably the 11th man off the bench with specific instructions: "Dodo, paniguraduhin mong di makakawala yang si Ramirez sayo! Gawin mo lahat, ikaw na bahala, wag mo lang pahawakin at patirahin ng bola!" Samson diligently acknowledged his coach's instructions with repeated nods and went inside to relieve Duane Salvatera as the Flaming Arrows inbounded at center court. Samson fixates himself upon Ramirez and followed him wherever he went. But the inbound pass still ended up at Ramirez's hands, with Lipa shaking his head coupled with some curses aimed at Samson. Ramirez raises the ball over his head, Samson covering him using his arms to shield off Ramirez's path, ensuring immobility on both left and right.

Suddenly, Ramirez's left (he was a lefty) elbow swung straight at Samson's face, hit him on the nose and jaws, fell like a log, and Ramirez went straight to the hoop for the unmolested layup. No foul called! Samson signals Lipa from the bench, motioning, "Coach, masakit, sub!" Lipa reaches out for the sky, wipes his face for the umpteenth time, curses even more, and puts Salvatera back in the game. Samson was never fielded again! Bwahahaha!

Ramirez and Romulo Orillosa were Shell's primary hitmen against the Big J back in the 80's. I hated their guts so much but as time passed, I realized they had to give their own share of licks to withstand their own share from Jaworski!

Hehe, for some reason may nakaregister na ata dito na Jess so iba na lang ginamit ko.

I can't remember Abbatuan's notoriety but I do recall seeing him in a Great Taste uniform in the late '80s with a bunch of other bruisers like Sonny Cabatu and other noted "magulangs" like Cezar and King. Ramirez, yeah I remember that guy. He was Shell's resident hoodlum in those rivalry years with Anejo/Ginebra and I must say that he was able to hold his own against Jawo, Distrito and co.

Kobe and the others are also right about Joseph Yeo. At a young age, this guy has earned a spot in Philippine basketball's hall of infamy.

I remember this story. Poor Dodo going up against "bato-bato" Jay Ramirez. Ganadong-ganado pa siya, jumping off the bench, then a few seconds later, limping towards the bench with his back arched while holding his jaw. No call tuloy, he he. (Jay will also end up playing for Lipa with Shell).

Speaking of Joy Dionisio, he was acquired by Crispa not only to shore up Crispa's backcourt but to have a contrapelo for Jawo. Back then, Crispa had no foil for Jawo as he pushed the likes of Fabiosa around. In comes Joy. Same build as Jawo. Mukhang tahimik pero may tinatagong lintik. I remember a fight where he tried to calm down a livid Fort Acuña, tapos bigla niyang sinapok.

Same with Jimmy Javier. He was the enforcer before the term became fashionable. Dun nga sa reunion game, he unleashed a flying kick to Guidaben. Walang patawad, he he. But I must admit, the Crispa-Toyota rivalry got even more colorful with the brawls/dirty plays between the players.

As I was partial to Tanduay after Crispa disbanded, I also enjoyed the Tanduay-Ginebra fracas. My team had its fair share of enforcers in Onchie, Itoy (sharp shooter na naging sharp elbows), Totoy Marquez and most notably, Rambo to counter Jawo, Distrito and Gonzalgo. Parating may stoppage sa games nila dahil parating may insidente.

  8. #68
fernandez wasn't really an enforcer, but he was more of a subtle hard-hitter (ala john stockton) and had elbows sharper than most players during that time.

relosa and yoyoy villamin (who was a good boy compared to the guys already mentioned) - the bruise brothers

    distrito was, well, distrito.

ramirez was the only guy on a predominantly good-boy shell team (with paras, parks and magsanoc) in the '90s who stood up to anyone on the anejo team. the same team that walked out in the championship, giving shell the title.

speaking of, ano ulit nagpasimula nung walkout na yun? ang alam ko cuenco got ejected but i don't recall why.

  9. #69
Cuenco was called for his fifth foul in the middle of the third quarter. The refs were calling Ginebra players for touch fouls and yet wouldn't do the same on the Shell players. Basically the imbalance of calls prompted the walkout.

  10. #70
It was actually only the second quarter KWK. Here's how I recalled things:

Shell was ahead by 19 points late in the 2nd quarter, 2:56 left if I'm not mistaken. At that point, not only was Shell ahead by a huge margin, Anejo was also paralyzed with foul trouble assessed on their key players. Import Sylvester Gray already had 4 fouls, Dante Gonzalgo had 4 fouls, Chito Loyzaga had 3 fouls and Robert Jaworski himself had 3. When Rey Cuenco was called by referee Rudy Hines for his 5th foul in that 2:56 mark, Cuenco walked over to Hines and gave a hard slap on Hines' nape (binatukan) that led to a technical foul. That was when mayhem crept in, fans were throwing cups and coins in the court and Anejo players were complaining how the calls were being made. The walkout ensued right after.

It's not so much about the imbalance that Anejo was protesting about. It was really how the referees changed their style of officiating in Game 6, a stark contrast from how they officiated in the first five games of the series. In the first 5 games, the zebras allowed a lot of physicality and ruggedness in the game to ensure that the games won't be stopped in every play brought about by a whistle from every foul committed. Just to give an idea how physical the games were, back in the semifinals, Anejo's key stopper for Ronnie Magsanoc, Leo Isaac was chopped in the arm by Shell's Arnie Tuadles that forced him to sit it out the entire finals series with a cast on his arm. There was no technical nor flagrant foul called on Tuadles as this was seen as part of the game. Hence, the ruggedness continued all the way to the finals.

Suddenly, the refs started calling it strict on Game 6 without advising both teams that they would be more stern with their calls. Anejo obviously would be at the losing end since they rely heavily on their physical defense to get victories. Shell had their share of calls but since even touch fouls were being assessed, Anejo suffered more with this change of approach by the refs.

^ This is how I recall it, too. The touch fouls really prevented Anejo from defending well without being called for a foul. Of course, being an anti I also was among those who thought Jawo and the Anejo crew were just being iyakin. But when Jawo et al walked out and then stood their ground I (even if very little ) admired him for that. Others would walk out just for the drama of it and eventually return after making a statement. But Jawo's walk out was one with balls.

Hoy mabait na si Abbatuan ngayon. May brother who is based in UK often played against him in Pinoy leagues in London. Nangangalabaw na lang daw pag crunch-time na. Other than that, wala namang complaints sa kanya unless of course you are offended by his ugly looks and unhygienic appearance (napuna nyo ba mukha siya parating nang-gigitata. pero kwidaw ka ha, me naka-on na artista iyan. si Kristel Romero yata. paging Jay P. Mercado!)

As for Jay Ramirez, one incident I can recall that made me realize Rudy Distrito could be on a league of his own. Ramirez and Distrito were jawing at one another when the latter let down his guards and gave an indication of mending his fences with the former. A smiling Distrito approached Ramirez, held him in the arms like he was about to give him a conciliatory hug. Ramirez fell for it and went at ease. Distrito, still holding a relaxed Ramirez in the arms, suddenly gave the latter a wicked headbutt and immediately backpedalled. Ramirez was grimacing in pain but I am sure his ego hurt more as he was clearly suckered in public.

  13. #73
Hehe! Johnny didn't know what to do, especially since Distrito, who was then playing for Swift, looked stern and serious. :-)

Regarding Kristel Romero, she was a bold and struggling starlet of the late 80's.

    Pareng Jay,
I assure you, the Distrito-Ramirez anecdote is factual. I'll be surprised if people are surprised by this tale. To quote my favorite author Rafael Sabatini, " Nothing beastly surprises me anymore when done by a beast." Distrito is well..a beast. He is now incarcerated for murder ( He is probably singing "Can't forget, won't regret what I did for lust" in prison) which is a good indication that he never abandoned his wild ways even after his playing days were over. At least guys like Abbatuan and Relosa who is now based here in Maryland have turned a new leaf after their PBA days were over.

Sa usapang kabastusan naman, there were rumors before that a fellow soft porn actor described Kristel Romero as "melon-amoy". Coincidentally, both Sheila Ysrael and Carmi Martin were rumored to have bad breaths. If this was true, then I suppose we can conclude that these black imports like 'em stinking in the mouth.

As for Ilonah Jean, nag-shooting na iyan sa bahay ko sa Plaridel, Bulacan. Iyung kapitabahay ko kasi is in-charge of shooting locations and set-arrangement of film making so he prefered to shoot many scenes in our subdivision kasi nga walang hassles sa mga permits. At natural, nanduon ako during the take.

Have a similar experience din ch2. Back in the late 90's when our house was being remodeled one of my brothers (a State U faculty member) offered his BLISS unit. He already allowed our movie producer neighbor to shoot a movie in the unit pala even before we moved in. It was one of those award winning soft porn movies, and like you, we were always situated at an angle where 'kita lahat' whlie filiming the 'maseselan' scenes . It was also penned by an award winning writer who is also a good friend. After we moved out another movie was shot within the same BLISS community. We are also friends with the producer. This time it was a Katya Santos movie and we made sure we were in the best seats in town . May kasama pang tagay .
