as a NBA player ---- we would not be paying JaVale a multi-million salary as it would be the Denver Nuggets which would shoulder the bill, what the SBP has to do is secure a Insurance that would cover the risks involved in case McGee gets injured or sick while seeing action in International FIBA action. NBA player contracts are insured in case of injury, guaranteeing a player will be paid if he is injured. In general, it's a 41-game deductible, giving teams some relief.
The insurance for NBA players in international events under normal circumstances works like this: The NBA's insurance plan covers a player's contract, and the player knows he will be paid his NBA salary if he is injured. The national team pays an additional insurance premium to cover career-ending injuries in international play, but since career-ending injuries are rare, the cost is nominal. In normal circumstances, career-ending insurance on contracts is obtained at a reasonable fee, anywhere from $3,000-$11,000 depending on a player's contract.
So unlike Marcus .... JaVale would only receive the allowances given to ordinary National Players. McGee is really committed as he would set-up his own training camp here in Manila bringing along his personal trainer. As mentioned before, Marcus would still be our Naturalized Player for the immediate tournaments while JaVale would be on stand-by until he gets his citizenship papers .... that will give him time to get used with International Game and get to know his future National team mates. It would also give Marcus time to tutor JaVale on how to be Filipino Basketball Player.a NBA player who is under contract with a NBA team cannot have another contract with any other team. Just like a PBA team, a player drafted in the National Team would still receive his salary from his "Mother" team. But as I mentioned many times, NBA teams requires Insurance Coverage when a player plays for his National Team. This was started by Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks.
