The cause of the is unknown, much less why it occurs more often in females than in males, but there are certainly hereditary factors present here. By hereditary factors, it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't acquire scoliosis just because your parents or grandparents didn't manifest any signs of having the condition. There may have been a silent gene that you inherited from your elders. There are also some theories which say that it is caused by nutritional and hormonal factors. However, as mentioned, since the cause is still unknown, these are just speculative.
Thanks for the explanation. i just read it in a medical book kasi that scoliosis is more common in women than in men, kaya nacurious lang naman ako kung bakit kasi hindi nila inexplain.

Hi doc Ira!! kasi we are going to do a research paper in our english class.my topic is all bout scoliosis. hindi ko pa nga natatapos kasi andami pang kulang na info. question lang.is exercise always important sa mga taong may scoliosis?is it necessary kahit +50 degrees na *** scolio? saka pwede ka bang magkaroon ng cyst or tumor sa likod if u hav scoliosis? tenks a lot!!

It depends on the orthopedic surgeon you talk to. The Americal doctors generally believe that exercise is ineffective in both prevention and progression of the condition, but European orthopedic surgeons consider exercise effective in the prevention and progression of the curvature. At the very least, moderate exercise is not harmful and is extremely important for maintaining healthy supportive muscles and preventing disk degeneration.

For severe scoliosis, it would depend on whether there is already onset of other problems like osteoporosis or disk problems (and there inevitably exists a concomittant problem), and what kind of exercises are going to be done. Since it's a case-to-case basis, you'll have to ask your doctor for clearance first. Twisting exercises are a no-no, but rehabilitation program exercises, e.g. stretching and yoga, have been to help reduce the magnitude of severe scoliosis in one study done in Germany.

E,doc Ira,d ba sabi na pilates is good for scoliosis? so okay lang ba un kahit severe na,like in my case? kasi nung 1 araw, nakapanood ako sa unang hirit.may tinurong 1 exercise dun sa pilates, kaya sinubukan ko gawin.okay naman *** feeling at wala naman akong naramdamang sakit afterwards.

  6. #86
Studies have shown benefits through pilates exercise, but since I don't really know the extent of your disease or whether there are complications that your doctor may be considering, you will have to ask your personal physician for clearance.

The only way to diagnose scoliosis is through x-rays. Back pains do not necessarily mean scoliosis, and unless your scoliosis is moderate to severe (by then, the abnormal spine curvature would be obvious enough that you only need an xray to measure the degree of angulation), back pains do not come with the package. Most mild degrees of scoliosis are asymptomatic, and the occasional back pains are due to muscle pain rather than anything else.

a doctor said i have a 10deg curve (basically a mild scolio diba?), i was just wondering if doing yoga/power yoga would affect the spine since some movements that i do are concentrated sa back/spine ko.

    thanks!

  12. #92
A 10 degree curvature of the spine is considered normal and in no way affects your function, mobility or strength. It's not a true scoliosis, it never progresses, and it doesn't increase your chances of getting back pain, arthritis, disc herniation, or any other problem. Treatment is therefore unnecessary. Sometimes these minimally curved spines even get straighter on their own. So you can perform any exercise you want.

Exercises are generally recommended for scoliosis sufferers because it stabilizes the spine, although in extreme cases where there is a chance of spinal injury or other complications, the doctor will advise you not to undergo these exercises.

Braces serve to prevent worsening of the angle. It doesn't cure nor improve scoliosis.

Surgery is done for teen and pre-teens who already have a curve around 40 degrees or more, even if they are asymptomatic. In adults, the reasons for doing surgery are less well defined, but may include an increasing discomfort or pain in a curve that's becoming more severe, increasing physical deformity, and neurologic deficits.

    baybee: You're welcome.

    Ganito *** brace ko.What is it called?Thanks..

  19. #99
That brace is a thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO). It has other names, e.g. Boston Brace, Low-profile brace, etc., but they're just one and the same.
